General :: MV - Missing File Argument (Moving Files Within LAN)
Feb 1, 2010
Objective: To move or backup all the 30 days old files to the other server within LAN. I have tried testing it first within the server by performing below commands:
find /usr/test1/* -mtime +30 -exec mv {} /usr/test2/ ;
But I'm getting "mv: missing file argument" error when I try this.

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

Today i am trying to learn how to use sed. I set up a testing folder with the following files:
AAb.lol
AAc.lol
AAx.lol
test.sh
My goal is to create a script (test.sh) which renames all the files to their original name without AA. I want to end up with this:
b.lol
c.lol
x.lol
test.sh
sed seemed to be the perfect tool so i went ahead and created a script which i think should clear the job.
[Code].........
mv: missing destination file operand after `$i' From that 2nd line i can tell that $NewName is just empty. I also read something about sed needing the -e option for scripting purposes but i just don't understand it.

Missing ifcfg-eth[2-5] fileset for ZNYX 345Q Quad Port 10/100 cards. I have showing in the gui network device that my ports for my ZNYX ZX345Q Quad Port card my ports are Auto eth2, Auto eth3 etc. My Motherboard and Intel cards show as System eth0 and System eth1.
There ARE corresponding entries for those in my /etc/sysconfig/network-settings/ directory, but there are not ifcfg-eth[2-5] files to correspond to these adapters. Can I just write my own files and that will do it?
How does Fedora 12/13 load these drivers into the kernel without having these ifcfg files?
I'd love to know if there is another way Fedora controls NICs / other system resources.

I want to do this
read a files's specific line but return as argument only part of it ie
...
value # this is mass
value2 # this is force
so, how can I get / use the $value and $value2 as arguments for some other file and skip the rest of the line(s) ? of course, the values are different everytime, but the comment always the same, as well as the position of the lines in the file

I have a bunch of .7z files in a directory, and I need to put each one of them into a separate directory, named after the file (without extention). The command line I use:
Code:
find . -type f | mkdir `sed -e "s:..(.*)...:1:"` ; ls | grep .7z | cp * `sed -e "s:(.*)...:./1/:"`
Copying fails though:
[Code]....
PS. I don't want to use scripts, I want to do it using simple commands and piping.

I'm trying to move files from one directory to another. I only want the files that start with a capital and within a certain range. Say all files that start with a capital between A-K. I've googled this and they all say to use: [A-M]*. But it moves all files A-M regardless if they are uppercase or lowercase.

$ mkdir backup && mv * backup/
mv: cannot move `backup' to a subdirectory of itself, `backup/backup'
Works, but issues a warning. Also exit code is 1.
How to do it properly (but not [much] longer)?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a partitioned dell laptop which I plan to replace soon. Then I hope to install Ubuntu in a partition, same as at present. What is the best way to transfer my software and files to the new machine? I can follow simple command line instructions but am a GUI slave at heart.

I'm told to go to /home/jbander/Downloads, so how do I do that, I assume you do it in terminal but what do you do next, I can get to home but thats it. How do I go from one directory or file or whatever they are, to another and once I'm there what do I do to see what is in the download file. One more question if I want to change it from e.g. cow to e.g. duck how would I do that(they are just arbitrary names) how do I get rid of cow and how do I put duck in it's place.

I get a SD card. Put in the SD reader. It's empty. I go to my super-important-pictures-to-a-monthly-relatory folder and select all files. Select them for MOVE. Paste them on the SD card. When the move/paste process is finished, i click on the "Eject" button on top of the SD card name. Card's ejected. I can't access the card anymore. I take out the card and put on my other computer. From 300 pictures, there are only 10 available, the remaining ones are there, but with 0bytes and unrecoveable. I panic. I go back to my main computer, my pictures are not there anymore. The pictures were on the Home folder. I panic again. I reset the computer and boot on the LiveCD. I install foremost, scalpel, photorec and about everything till my USB drive complains about being filled up. I run everything and I can't recover my files. I'm in the danger of getting fired. Things like that makes Windows sounds more appealing. When you securely remove a pendrive, things get REALLY pasted there before screwing everything up with a removal.

I am using secure delete to remove files from a Debian Linux PC. However, secure delete does not remove folders. This has lead me to look at writing a script that would move files to a predetermined folder for deletion. My plan is as follows:I have a folder on my desktop called shredder where I move the contents of the waste bin to. The script needs to identify all files within the folders and sub folders, within the shredder folder, and move each file to the shredder folder and then delete the folder. At this point secure delete can be used with a command like shred -v -u *.*on the shredder folder. The problem I have is in creating the code to move files from the different folders and then deleting the folders. Note that the names of the files, folders and subfolders will not always be known

I've got a directory with thousands of files and I want to delete those that contain specific text. When I try:Code: ls | grep -l "specific text" * | xargs rm I get the error: Code: /bin/grep: Argument list too long Is there an easy way to get around this without having to move files into seperate folders and processing them in batches? I found an article on getting around this problem, but I'm kind of new to Linux and don't know how to apply this to my specific problem.

I am versioning my config files with git. Now I need to move some of my config files to a different repository, to achieve a clean structure. Is there a way I can keep the change log for a file if I move it to a different repository? I would like to have all commits of repo A in repo B that touched file A/a if I move it to B/a. Ideally, if I afterwards move A/x to B/x, I would want to see B/a and B/x appear together in commits that touched both files in repository A. I would not expect to have any development step of A/a merged into any of the commits of B, I just want them to appear there afterwards.

#make sure the first argument was formatted correctly
if [ $? -ne 0 ]

I just installed Fedora 13 on a new Dell XPS desktop and some of the networking files are not created/missing. The computer has Broadcom Gigabit wired card and Asus PCE-N13 wireless card. When I type lspci, I see that Network conroller: RaLink RT2860 and Ethernet controller: Broadcom BCM57780 Gigabit Ethernet. So, somehow they are being detected by the OS, but I am not sure if the drivers are installed or why some of the network files are missng.

How do you rename:
abc123.txt
abc124.txt
abc125.txt
to
abc.txt.123
abc.txt.124
abc.txt.125
Basically, I want to move the digits from the filename to after the extension.
It works for one file if I type:
rename 123.txt .txt.123 abc.txt.123
but I have thousands of files like these.

After moving to Lucid, I have no flashplayer. Eventually, I tracked the problem to a missing Cannonical repository. I inserted the line in the sources list: [URL] Now Synaptic reports:
E: Type [URL] is not known on line 45 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list
E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I have re-checked everything I can think of, and remain baffled!

I was moving a folder using Nautilus from an internal drive to a USB drive when suddenly, the power failed and the system rebooted before the UPS could go into backup. After I booted the PC again, half the files are are in neither of the drives. Do they go into a temporary folder first? There's nothing in /tmp and there's no Lost+Found folder. Is there anyway to get back those files? I'll always copy and delete from now on instead of moving.

I am setting up a Demo website that I am hosting in a Debian Lenny VM, I have installed Apache, mySQL, and PHP5 I know the php server is working because if I place an info php file I can see it in the browser. However, I downloaded phpfusion, as well as phpmyadmin and they are on my desktop, I open a superuser file browser (also added write access to /var/www to everybody and copied the files over as me) and copied over the files. Once in the www folder they are no longer seen as "valid" php files, if I try to access them with iceweasel, IE, Konquerer it asks me if I want to download the file. If I look at the files on my desktop they have different icons. I have attached a screenshot. I can't tell what the difference is, but obviously there is one otherwise the icons wouldn't be different. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here or a way to rectify it?

I have have ubuntu 10.10 at work hooked onto a Windows Server 2003. I have pretty much everything working peachy except I can't copy files onto the network drive. When I start my computer, i have to manually go to network places and navigate around until i find my company share drive and then its mounted for the rest of the day. I can read files from the share drive and oddly enough save documents through programs like gimp and open office, however if i go through nautilus to try and copy a file from my desktop to the company share, it won't let me. It just says "Error while copying 'yourfile'" and the details just say "invalid argument."

I have the standard problem of trying to count a large number of files in a directory (>100k)
I have tried: ls ~/user/images/* -l | wc -l and find ~/user/images/* -maxdepth 1 -type f | wc -l
In both cases, I get the argument list too long error message.
I have tried using xargs but I can't seem to get it to work right.
The command
returns a valid answer but it includes all the subdirectories in the file count.

Write a program that requires the user to input the name of a file as an argument. If the user fails to include one argument it should make use of a thread that handles a signal. The signal handler should tells the user Incorrect number of arguments and then calls the terminate signal on the process.
If the numbers of arguments are correct then the program should allocate memory space to the file (5MB) and create a child process that requests the user for a character that it should send to the parent. The child should keep request for data until the user keys in the character O. During each request it should pause for 10 seconds, send the character to the parent and then requesting again for another character.
The parent should get the character from the child. Do not make the parent wait for the child to finish requesting for data. Make use of pipes to facilitate communication between the parent and the child. A second child should be created to read and display data from the file. Make use of any appropriate Inter Process Communication technique to ensure that the second child and the parent do not access the file simultaneously (Mutual exclusion).
