General :: KDE Stop Virtual Desktop Changing When Click On The Desktop?

Sep 18, 2011

I'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.

And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

Ubuntu :: No Desktop Files Or Right Click On Desktop?

May 7, 2011

I was just playing around with the Unity plugin (adjusting opacity) and now the files on my desktop aren't there (yes i know that those files are in the desktop folder) but they don't show on the desktop. also, when I right click on the desktop, nothing happens. it all changed when I played with the Unity plugin by adjusting opacity... I really liked having files on my desktop and being able to change my background by right clicking...

After I adjust my slackware and rebooted I saw a strange "rectangle" on my desktop. Please, look at the screenshots below and tell me how I should solve this problem.

I can't move it. Right-click menu on a rectangle coincides with a right-click on desktop. It does not prevent, but very annoying.

General :: Extended Desktop Virtual Screens And A Usb2vga Adaptor

Jan 16, 2011

OS Linux Mint 10, Intel graphics, SIS usb2vga adaptor.

I have three screens. The netbook screen with the extended desktop onto a vga screen and a third screen connected to a usb2vga adaptor.

The extended desktop screens without the usb2vga adaptor works perfectly. I can maximise applications to either screen perfectly without them spreading across both screens. As soon as I connect the third screen via the usb2vga adaptor maximising an application causes it to spread across both screens yet the third usb2vga screen has it's own virtual desktop environment.

I have tried numerous versions of my xorg.conf file that I have generated to incorporate the usb2vga adaptor to make this work and regardless of what xrandr commands I send including changes to the gconf settings nothing seems to solve the issue.

It seems odd that I can create a panel and position it left, right, top or bottom of the second monitor of the extended desktop and it sticks to the screen dimensions yet I can't get any application to do the same when there is a third screen connected through the usb2vga adaptor.

I don't use Compiz, it crashes my system and I don't want separate workspaces I want the extended desktop with the two separate virtual screens to fit on the two separate screens that form part of the extended desktop.

With Xinerama deprecated what other options do I have.

Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties:

Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first screen when 2nd screen is unplugged Keyboard shortcut friendly Not too hard to install Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics.

OpenSUSE :: Editing The Desktop's Right Click Menu?

Mar 20, 2011

First things first, I've just moved from Ubuntu with Gnome to openSuse with KDE. So I'm lost as doing some things in this environment. However, I'm loving what I'm seeing with suse/kde combo. I'm planning on making an extensive right-click menu to categorize all my applications. Basically I want to have the "start" menu available to me when I right-click. I've google casually for a couple days and haven't found much that helps, but I think its because I'm not using the correct keywords seeing as I'm new to this environment.

I have a feeling I'm going to have to make a [Desktop Entry], but I'm not sure how to handle hierarchy and stuff like that.

Ubuntu :: Right Click GONE When 'Hide Desktop' Activated / What To Do?

I've been into Linux since about 6 months, & I love it. Thanks to everyone....

Anyway, Due to the bad habit of windows habits, I've many Desktop Icons on my Desktop.
I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO HIDE THEM. I know both the ways for hiding them...

BUT, the problem is, whenever I hide Icons, the desktop RIGHT CLICK DROP-DOWN MENU goes too!! There's no right click menu then.
But as soon as I activate SHOW DESKTOP ICONS, the menu comes back... Pretty obvious why. But how can I prevent it???

SO, my dear fellows, please enlighten me. WHAT SHOULD/CAN I DO?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Click Windows On Different Planes Of The Desktop

Jan 22, 2011

know how to explain this, but I'll try to the best I can. I installed from wubi, so I don't know if that matters, but here goes.

When I'm using ubuntu, I'm unable to click on any windows/elements outside of my current window, or use the close/minimize/maximize buttons. For example right now, in firefox, I am unable to use either of the taskbars or minimize the window. I can't click any of the icons on the desktop or anything, either, and if a page triggers a popup, I can't do anything with it. The thing is, though, interestingly, unplugging and replugging my USB mouse fixes it until I click on something again. I have no clue if it's a driver issue, a hardware issue (my mouse works fine on windows, though), or just a misconfiguration in the OS somewhere.
