General :: HP ProLiant DL380 + Debian Squeeze + Firmware-bnx2_0.28_all

Apr 2, 2011

I have a HP ProLiant DL380 server and I am trying to install Debian on it. I had an error that said dhcp config failed at the installation and Debian could not find my NIC. I've Googled it and found out that I need to install required Broadcom NIC drivers.

There are images that 3rd people have created but I don't want to use them as it will be a server.

Another way to install them is to download .deb package and install it from a removable media when asked.

So I went ahead and did an exper install mode and choose adding packages from a media so an option appeared for me to install stuff from removable media now.

Each time I choosed it, my flash drive's lights were blinking but then I was getting an error says this package can not be installet are you sure to instal non signed package.

I say yes at that stage but I still can not install and it says this is probably happening because of kernel version miss match.

I downloaded latest stable copy of debian from official debian site and downloading the stable squeeze copy of the driver from official Debian site too.[URL]..

Server :: Debian On HP ProLiant DL380 - NIC Driver Installation - Firmware-bnx2

Apr 5, 2011

I have a HP ProLiant DL380 server and I am trying to install Debian on it.

I had an error that said dhcp configuration failed at the base installation and Debian found my NICs but asked for driver.

I've Googled it and found out that I need to install required Broadcom NetExtreme NIC drivers.

There are images that 3rd people have created but I don't want to use them as it will be a server.

Another way to install them is to download .deb package and install it from a removable media when asked.

So I went ahead and did an expert install mode and choosed adding packages from a media so an option appeared for me to install stuff from removable media now.

Each time I choose it, my flash drive's lights are blinking but then I am getting an error says this package can not be installed are you sure to install a non signed package.

I say yes at that stage but I still can't install and then it says this is probably happening because of kernel version miss match.

I downloaded latest stable copy of Debian and also downloaded the stable squeeze copy of the driver from official Debian site too. [url]

Is this a kernel mismatch between my Deb. version and the driver?

And after many try my server started hanging at detecting network hardware stage, how can I deal with this?

Also finally I started to get this...

[url]

Is this happening because I am using wrong architecture CD?

I have i386 image and my server has 2 x Pentium 3 processor.

General :: CD Not Found When Installing RHEL 5.4 On HP Proliant DL380 G3?

Mar 3, 2010

I've been asked by my boss to install RHEL 5.4 onto a HP Proliant DL380 G3 which we have here. Now I'm a total linux newbie but can figure my way around most things but this has got me stumped.

I have downloaded the RHEL 5.4 i386 DVD iso and burnt it OK. But when I boot from the CD in the server it doesn't recongise it. I put the DVD into any other server/PC and it boots fine. The server also boots fine from other CDs'DVDs?

Anyway, I thought I would try the boot.iso instead so I burnt this and the DL380 boots fine. I try the default install option, select country/keyboard layout/ select local CDROM as the install type and this is the problem now.

It ejects the boot CD so I put in the RHEL 5.4 DVD and it keeps saying:- the red hat enterprise linux server cd was not found in any of your cdrom drives I have reburnt the DVD and same problem. I have also tried creating a VM with the DVD and this boots and installs fine in VMWare so I know the DVD is good.

Ubuntu Servers :: Compaq Proliant DL380 G2 Refusing To Install 10.10

Mar 29, 2011

I have a Compaq server, as per the title, and I wish to install Ubuntu Server onto it but ran aground when I found it got to trying to run the installer after the CD Boot menu, it just stopped there, waited 180 seconds (as per the error's details) and then locked up with the Caps Lock & Scroll Lock lights on the keyboard flashing.

Now I know it's not the server, as I have installed other OSes onto it in the past, including an older version of Ubuntu server (9.04), I did try and re-install the 9.04 version but the CD I had was too scratched up and got to a point in the installer (copying files) where it just failed cos it couldn't read the disc.

The specs of the thing are:

Dual PentiumIIIs 1.4GHz
512mb RAM (keep meaning to upgrade it)
3x 18.2GB 10k SCSI HDDs (Storage)

[code]...

Not sure what else is in there, but the full specs are on the web...

Debian :: Squeeze Netinstall With Non-free Firmware?

Apr 4, 2011

I installed Squeeze on a server today, and struggled a bit because the network card needed non-free firmware (Broadcom something). The server had no floppy, so I had to go and get a pen drive and put firmware from non-free on it to get it to work.

I agree on the political issues on this, but sometimes it's non-free or nothing.

So I was wondering if someone know of a patched netinstall, or know how to make one? Then I could give the pen drive away to something more useful that keeping non-free firmware. Warnings and questions about the non-free would also be nice.

Hardware :: Debian Squeeze And RAID Firmware After Kernel Update

Mar 20, 2011

I've installed Debian Squeeze on my server several days ago. During install process installer asked me to provide USB flash drive with firmware aic94xx-seq.fw. All went fine. Today I installed all updates to my system with "U" in aptitude. Aptitude installed kernel update 2.6.32-5 and created initrd accordingly. But now I can't boot up my system because it can't find LVM volumes on harddrive connected to Adaptec RAID card. How can I boot my system now? I have USB with firmware.

I have netboot CD. Unfortunately when I tried to edit boot records in grub I found that there is no my old kernel anymore. The only kernel grub sees is the new vmlinuz kernel and new initrd How take make my server alive?

Debian Hardware :: Bluetooth Firmware With Windows 7/Squeeze Dual Boot?

Aug 3, 2010

This problem goes back to when I first purchased my laptop 4 years ago: Dell Precision M90. It came with Vista, but I wanted Ubuntu on instead. In order to get bluetooth to work, I had to downgrade the firmware. This is all fine and means bluetooth works in XP too. However, now, I have a dual boot with Windows 7 and Squeeze, I use Vista drivers (as Dell don't provide 7 drivers) and this has upgraded the firmware, and broken bluetooth in Squeeze. How can I get bluetooth working in both Squeeze and Windows 7? Could changing the hardware help? If so, what to?

Is this card supported in Squeeze by either the non-free firmware or the proprietary driver? I just got one to stick into an older box that will be going to a college girl that wants the 3D desktop in KDE. The built-in video was a joke and wouldn't even work without compositing. It was one of those crappy, non-standard pieces of crap known as a "Unichrome" (not the pro).

Installation :: Squeeze Or Lenny Not Load Root On Proliant 3000

May 4, 2010

On a ancient server Proliant 3000 (works perfect) with Smart Array 3200 and raid 5, and a CD-ROM IDE drive, I have installed Debian Squeeze or Lenny more five times without success. Before run install the OS on this server is neccesary to execute Smart Start CD, which create (block 1 of the hard disk) the Compaq Diagnostic partition (aprox 39 MB).After that proceeding, I ran the installation CD (Debian Squeeze, or Lenny, both with same results) wich ended well. The bootloader was sets on MBR or primary sector. On restart, the OS remains long time trying to load root, and later it warns something as this:"Gave up waiting for root device:" etc etc and "ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/c53f0423 does not exist. Droping to a shell!"

I summarized the screen text because lines that I pasted above are clear about matter.I tried to change GRUB 2 from bootloader screen ("e" keypress) the /dev/hda or hd0 or like this, but not resolved the problem...I went to other console (Alt-F2) and I typed "fdisk -l" and "df -h" and I saw that CD drive appears like "/dev/hda"... It not's something strange?

Debian Installation :: HP Proliant N40L Does Not Boot Into USB Stick

Mar 14, 2015

I have downloaded the "debian-7.8.0-amd64-netinst.iso" from the official website. I then used dd to create a bootable usb stick. The usb stick is detected by the HP Proliant server but it does not boot from it, even if no other OS is present (so boot order is not the problem, and even if it was, i checked the bios). I tried the original iso in a Virtualbox environment and it worked without a problem.

I then tried creating the usb stick in Windows using "Unetbootin" and "LinuxLive Creator". When I insert the stick into the HP this time it boots from it and all is good. I can not use this approach though, because I want to automate the installation until I can SSH onto the server. But somehow unetbootin and linuxlivecreator overwrite my modified debian isos preseed file (which also works perfectly on a Virtualmachine).I also used dd to create a Ubuntu usb stick and that works without a problem on the HP Proliant.

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitioning On New HP DL380 G6?

Jan 18, 2010

I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu on a brand new HP DL380 G6 server. Any time I go through the install, it freezes at 33% of formatting the first partition. I have tried 9.04 server disk, 9.10 server disk, and 9.10 desktop (all AMD64). I'm running out of ideas to troubleshoot. The server is listed as supported by Ubuntu 9.04. Here's more of the hardware:

2x quad-core Intel Xeon X5550 procs
16GB of RAM
5x 300GB SAS drives in RAID-5 array (1.2TB useable)

I just finished installing with the 9.10 alternate install disk (AMD64), and after reboot, it doesn't seem to find the boot partition and just sits there after attempting to boot from CD and hard disk.

Feb 12, 2010

I just did an update of my Debian system from lenny to squeeze as described here. I got some errors during the install, saying that glibc couldn't be updated. I did an apt-get -f install, which gives me the following warning: WARNING: this version of the GNU libc requires kernel version 2.6.18 or later. Please upgrade your kernel before installing glibc.

The installation of a 2.6 kernel could ask you to install a new libc first, this is NOT a bug, and should NOT be reported. In that case, please add lenny sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list and run: apt-get install -t lenny linux-image-2.6 Then reboot into this new kernel, and proceed with your upgrade dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.10.2-2_i386.deb (--unpack): subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing:

General :: Debian Squeeze No Network Manager

Jul 31, 2011

Okay, so today I decided I was bored with my current Fedora 15 installation and tried a little distro hopping. Eventually I ended up at Debian Squeeze. I downloaded the cd version as a net install won't work because of driver issues. I used the graphical interface to install it.When it finished installing I booted it up, made sure everything was working. Now in all my past I think 6 linux installations, all I had to do to get the internet working was move a file someone gave me a while to my /lib/firmware. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but no matter what, where ever I go, I can't find an actual manager to connect to the internet. This might be a stupid question to a lot of people, but I'm stumped. There is nothing in the menu's.

Now I've been working with GNU/Linux for almost a year now and have come across many problems, but never like this. I've Googled up and down, and searched the forums here and still nothing. I've looked in the menu's and the only network related thing is network-proxy. Just for kicks I also tried

Fedora Installation :: Install FC 12 Or 13 On An HP DL380 G6 Server

Jul 7, 2010

I'm trying to install FC 12 or 13 on an HP DL380 G6 server. The problem occurs just after the image is loaded off of the DVD. After a bunch of boot messages scroll up the screen, a final message appears stating waiting for hardware to initialize. At that point, the video signal goes away and never comes back. I have to power cycle to regain control. If I select the option to do an install with a basic video driver, the installation proceeds beyond that message and I can finish the installation, however, my graphics resolution is 800x640 and I can't change it. Is there a reported compatibility problem with the HP server and FC? Is there something I can do so that I can get past the failure and be able to operate with a decent resolution?

The screen is blue with those characters and the server is freezing...Looks like a hardware iLO issue, but not sure. When I restarted the server, it picked up the PXE boot and loaded windows upto the serial key and all that loading process was readable.
