I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

i just installed ubuntu server edition 10.10, install said it was successful, but instead of loading a normal login screen it takes me to a screen that says exactly this: Quote: Ubuntu 10.10 computer name ttyl computer name login: Im wondering if this is normal or did the install go wrong somewhere, and not report it and if there is a way to fix it.

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

I was previously on Windows 7 and then had to get a new hard drive as my old one died on me. As I had a Ubuntu disc lying around, I decided to install it onto this computer, but honestly, I can't stand the OS and can't do anything that I'm used to doing (and doing it slower when in Linux). My question is, how do I completely reformat this hard drive / how do I install WIndows onto this computer, when my BIOS isn't letting me edit it. The Windows disc doesn't try to load, no matter what I try to do to it.

I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/)Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?

I recently reformatted my external hard drive. Somewhere along the way I think my fstab got messed up because now my hard drive won't mount. Instead I get the following error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
If I mount it through Gparted, it mounts just fine.
My fstab currently looks like this:

I have a little experience using Ubuntu with VMWare Fusion on my Mac, but that is about it. My girlfriend is running Windows Vista on an HP Pavilion tx 2000 laptop and she has been having all sorts of trouble with it. Needless to say Windows is eating the computer from the inside out so I recommended that she use Ubuntu, which means that I have to set everything up for her... So my question is how do I go about reformatting the entire hard drive and installing Ubuntu (or another Linux based OS recommended)?

I was trying to reformat my Seagate external hard drive and I selected "free Space," in disk utility not realizing that the computer would no longer recognize the device. I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on it so now how do I format it now to the GUID format? I luckily backed up the entire contents of the hard drive (The essential files on it), but what do I do now that the computer doesen't recognize it!?

Going to be setting up a local home server ("headless") for the following:* General file sharing for home network -- a portion of this will be for movies which are accessed via Popcorn-Hour and a second PC hooked to another TV* MySQL storage for home network (bills, misc info, bookmarks, code snippets, etc.)* PHP Server for php scripts i write* SVN* misc Databases for PHP dBase testing (SQLite and Postgre) * Virtualbox* backing up stuffI have a bunch of hard-drives of different sizes, buffer size and access speeds.
Hardware* m/b supermicro X7SBL-LN2* Intel Xeon X3360 Yorkfield 2.83GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor* (2) (8GB in total) Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Server Memory Model CT2KIT25672AA667
* (known hdd) Western Digital Caviar Green WD10EADS 1TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s3.5"Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
What would be the best way to set this up ?OS installed on fast hdd ?Virtualbox on fast hdd ?Movie storage on fast hdd's (mirror raided) ?As for raid, i plan on taking two (1TB) hdd's and mirror them for the movies and two more (smaller) mirrored for backup storage.Im pretty sure i would want the Movies stored on there own hard-drive (faster hdd with more buffer) so not to cause and "lag" incase the server is being used/access at the same time for another use (MySQL access or what ever).Currently the server machine is set-up using VMware which is where the current Ubuntu-server is installed to/on, but now i would like to have Ubuntu as the base and use Virtualbox as means to virtual hosting instead of VMware.

I tried to install ubuntu 11.04 on my external hard drive (WD My Passport, thats all i remember about the name) and all was well, until I tried to reformat it from ext4 to FAT, and no such luck, it isn't even being READ, not in fdisk -l, not by gparted, disk manager, or anything else. Windows is no help at all... I tried that out of desparation.

This is a problem I've been working at on and off for quite a long time now. I acquired one of these devices from a thrift store and eventually decided that the drives would serve better mounted in my desktop PC, rather than hooked up to a router where large-scale backups are made unbearably slow.
What I quickly discovered is that these drives don't want to appear to any OS. The Windows installer doesn't see them. My Linux distro (at the time) didn't see them. A GParted live CD didn't see them. DBAN didn't see them. The BIOS, however, saw them, so I banged my head against a few possible solutions.
Martin Hinner's blog seemed promising but didn't have the information I wanted. This blog only had disassembly guides/photos, and no info (that I was able to find) on actually getting the drives to work in a Linux system. I'd love to have an extra 4TB of storage in my desktop.

I recently purchased 3 new WD cavier green 500gb drives with the intent of building a raid5 array and running linux. Admittedly I purchased without doing enough research and now I have serious doubts about running an os on raid5 with the onboard controller. So now I am thinking I should run one drive as an OS drive and mirror the other two. I don't have a fourth drive unless someone can convince my wife I need a fourth after already buying 3....
Is it possible to have multiple distributions where ALL distros save their docs to the raid dives? That way I can wipe/install the os and keep my files? I seem to recall that I can be done, just need someone to point the compass.

I have approx. 30x Western Digital SATA 2.5" hard drives ranging from 80GB to 500GB. These are ex-Tandberg RDX QuikStor backup drives that I no longer use and would like to use them as spare laptop hard drives. The only problem is upon installing the drive in a laptop it prompts for a hard drive user password.
Are there any open source methods to wipe the password (and data; I don't care about that)? I've tried using various wiping methods (dd, dban etc.) but the password still remains.Any help is greatly appreciated; I really need these drives.Plugging it in via a USB HDD enclosure shows as /dev/sdb but does not respond to (c)fdisk or show any partitions (/dev/sdb1 etc).

When the computer starts, you will read a flashing message about S.M.A.R.T and a few other things.I have two hard drives. There is a strange noise from the computer when I run it for more than 3 or 4 hours continuously. I firmly believe one of the hard drives is not working properly. I saw a message about a problem in S.M.A.R.T.It was a flashing message. I couldn't read it. I don't run any Windows on the computer. All are Linux. The default is Mandriva.
How do I read the flashing message you see at the start of a computer? I want to find out the damage one replace it with a new one.

I was thinking about this for a while and I haven't come across it in any of my reading. Could you split an os over two drives? Example:
drive hda, 35GB xp - 5GB fat32storage / hda1 8GB root - 2GB swap
drive hdb 10GB usr - 10GB home -10GB var / hdb 10GB root linux#2
hdb 1GB swap - 9GB user - 5GB home - 5GB tmp I hope I made this clear enough I'm sure someone must have tried this before. Maybe I got too much time on my hands.

I'm trying to setup a dual boot system with Windows Vista 64 (already installed) and Ubuntu 10.10. I added a new drive which is identical to the one Vista is installed on. When I boot into the LiveCD I can see and mount the second drive and edit it in Gparted. However, when I use the installer it will only bring up the drive that already has Vista installed.

I have a 3 year old PC with 4 internal SATA ports. My old SATA hard drives, all smaller than 2TB, work fine. If I buy a 3TB SATA hard drive, will it work in Linux? Will Linux with GRUB be able boot from such a hard drive without a BIOS upgrade? With a BIOS upgrade? It's fine for me to upgrade my Linux to the newest kernel.
