General :: After Installation Of X.Org No Longer Acess Tty's?

Feb 27, 2011

I have a fresh Arch Linux install and one of the first things i did was inastall X.Org and Pekwm. I boot into runlevel 5 with Xdm. The problem is once X is running I can no longer acess terminals via CTL-MOD-FN(1-7). I am not using a graphics card so I doubt that its a driver issue and have the same result after I boot into runlevel 3 and use Startx. The only thing on the screen if I try to change tty's is a mesage from my monitor saying "Frequency Out of Range"

Fedora :: Can't Acess Partition After Installing F11?

Sep 20, 2009

I have my hard drive partitioned 40GB for boot and 540 for media. When installing fedora I chose the option to replace the existing linux installation. By not clicking the option "use whole drive" I thought I would easily still be able to acess my media drive (which has a LOT of media on it) I dont know if I chose the right options. Anyways, the partion table has been changed. I know the data is still their, the media partition was at the end of drive, and im guessing fedora installs on the beginning of the drive, so I am hoping none of my data was written over, but I have no idea. Every othe linux Install I have done, I have still been able to acess my media partition, but on those installatons I was sure I was doing it right, but on the fdora installation

Ubuntu :: Gaining Remote Acess To University Computer With VPN?

Oct 1, 2010

I managed to install the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client provided by my university (Ohio State) and successfully connect to the school's server ( However, after I have connected, I cannot figure out how to get into this directory: \fc1student.mecheng.ohio-state.edustudentusername

The website (search "ohio state mechanical engineering vpn" in google = top non sponsored link result) says that this address must be entered in Windows Explorer; however, I am using Ubuntu 9.04, so I cannot use Windows Explorer (with the exception of WINE). I tried using the "connect to server" program listed under "Places", but have not had any luck. I also think the computers in the lab I'm trying to connect to are not using Samba. Any ideas on how I might connect to this location?

CentOS 5 Server :: Cannot Acess Samba Share Unless SElinux Is Off?

May 8, 2009

I don't think it has anything to do with the config file.More to do with SElinux. I need to know how to configure SElinux so I can see my samba share when SELinuxis on. When I setenforce 0 I can seen all the files and folders set it to setenforce 1 cannot see anything. Here is the output when I ran [root@fileserver /]# getsebool -a | grep smballow_smbd_anon_write --> onsmbd_disable_trans --> onThese two options were off I tried turning them on.This is another one of the commands I tried running. I did change a few options but I am not sure which I do need to change. I am running a stand alone server so I don't need the DC option.

[root@fileserver /]# getsebool -a | grep samba

Fedora Installation :: Machine No Longer Boots

Jan 22, 2009

In completely new to Fedora. After a clean install, I went through, configured yum, did all yum updates and rebooted. I then installed the graphics card (m9500 gs) using RPMfusion and restarted again. After doing so, the comp shows the fedora loading bar but once it finishes, it hangs there and you see a small flashing box. I have no idea how to uninstall that nvidia driver.

to my xorg.conf. Still same issue. Finally I went through and added the "notap" to the grub.conf. I am at a complete loss here. When I try and manually load the driver, the Nvidia installer gives and error about not finding any preconfigured kernels for the package. Then It try's to build its own kernel but says its missing the "cc" in the "gcc" package. Any ideas? If you want to know exactly what I've done so far, I pretty much only followed the guide at As you might be able to tell, I am very NOOB.

When I went to log on to it today, the log in screen comes up as normal, I enter my password, ubuntu thinks about it for a minute, and then sends me right back to the log in screen.

I have an Asus EeePC 1005, dual booting Windows 7 Starter/Ubuntu 10.04

I just want to see if this is fixable before I wipe the partition and reload ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Repository May No Longer Be Available / Could Not Be Contacted

Jan 2, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 (unable to upgrade to 10.10 just yet). About a week or two ago, Update Manager started complaining. After choosing "check for updates" I'm getting the following error:Could not download all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I'm getting similar errors when using apt-get. I tried to use a repository of a different country (fi instead of il), but still got 404 response, so this doesn't seem to be a local server problem. I would find it odd that 8.10 would be removed from the repositories, but if not - what has happened? I'm not even sure if the problem is on my end or not. I can't find anyone else complaining so (unless I'm missing out) the problem is probably local, but I don't really know where to start looking.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Longer Login After Update?

Feb 28, 2011

I am having a problem with the latest update of lucid ubuntu. I was on 10.04 for the longest time but decided to update while I was out doing errands. When I got back the logon screen was made up of blue and gray windows on a completely black background and the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work!

I found that if I unplugged and then replugged my mouse that I could get it working, but not all the options work properly. When you try to close a menu it just stays up, but it isn't there at the same time. Also, the shutdown/restart options don't work along with the physical power button on my computer, I have to remove the battery and power cord to shut it down.

I am currently dual booting ubuntu and windows 7 on my gateway NV59 laptop.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Can No Longer Access Windows

Mar 31, 2011

I tried Ubuntu 10.10 after occasionally using other distros of Linux from time-to-time on friends' machines. After deciding it trumped Windows in almost every way, I decided to install if from a USB stick. The installation appeared to work and I followed the instructions that were given on the Ubuntu download page. After it restarted, it booted back from the USB stick asking again if I wanted to try Ubuntu or install it. I tried to shut down however the only options I get in the power off menu (on the top right) are Suspend and Hibernate. I ended up turning the computer off by holding the power button on my computer (I know this has probably hindered me more than helped but I needed to shut down).

When the power was off, I removed the USB stick and tried turning on the laptop again, however, I no longer get any options to get into my BIOS settings, and NOTHING will boot. I just get a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the top left corner. I can still use Ubuntu by using the ''Try Ubuntu'' option when running from the USB stick but quite obviously this is not ideal. I know I have probably wiped Windows Vista from my system (I had most data backed up a week or so ago, so all the important things I still have, however, if there is any way, I would like it all back). Any way to do a Super-System-Restore to revert back to Windows (if this is even possible).

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Is No Longer In Existence On This System ?

Jan 6, 2010

I have two internal 500GB hard drives in my system. On the first, I had 9.04 installed, and used the second as storage. Well, I decided to try out 9.10, so I installed it on the second hard drive. Basically I was running 9.04 and 9.10 side-by-side. I just wanted to make sure I liked 9.10, before fully upgrading. Once I decided to move over to 9.10, I just copied all my files and the like from the first drive to the second. Once done with that, I re-formatted the first hard drive to become storage once again. I got 9.10 set-up the way I like it, got my Firefox bookmarks and settings put together, installed all the various apps, etc. Updates came in, I installed them and restarted. But what's this? GRUB is no longer in existence on this system!

I'm assuming that installing 9.10 beside 9.04 allowed for them to use GRUB off the first drive? And in re-formatting it, I got rid of GRUB? That's the only scenario that makes sense. I can boot off LiveCD fine, I just can't get 9.10 to boot, mainly because there is no GRUB.

So, is there any way to install GRUB through a LiveCD, or some other method? I suppose I could just wipe everything, and install a fresh copy of 9.10 again, but I'd like to avoid that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrading From 9.10 To 10.04 - System No Longer Boots

Feb 10, 2010

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 my System no longer boots. I had a Dual-Boot System. On Boot I get - "error : the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found grub rescue> (prompt):
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/normal.mod' (I get the same error)
If I run 'insmode /boot/grub/ext2.mod' (I get 'The symbol 'grub_xasprinf' not found)
If I run ls /boot (The Kernel File Names look Ok)

If I run in Rescue Mode it Reports (The installer could not find any partitions, so you will not be able to mount a root file system. This may be caused by the Kernel failing to detect your hard disk drive or failing to read the partition table, or the disk may be unpartitioned. If you wish, you may investigate this from a shell in the installer environment.) I ran the recommended reporting script and got the following output:-

=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb

Ubuntu Installation :: Graphics And GUI No Longer Supported After Upgrade?

Mar 1, 2010

The last time I updated Linux it was from Gibbon to Heron. (so 7.10 to 8.04 ) I'm now trying to get caught back up. Thing is, now that I updated from 8.04 to 8.10 I can no longer get to a GUI. Also, most of the text in the terminal is a diamond character as if the font that's installed doesn't want to work most of the time. This is somewhat confusing, but I believe my system's language was set as Japanese before the upgrade and now it's trying to display Kana and/or Kanji and the terminal doesn't like that. Not really important, but I'm not sure how to proceed to the next upgrade or get to a GUI. Fortunately, my system's set up to dual-boot with windows. Can someone help tell me how to get my GUI back or what package to install?

I'm running on a laptop with an ATI mobility Radeon 9700. I've had problems with it and drivers in previous versions back to 6.10 too, but never to the point that the GUI wouldn't work. It's actually an issue with my X Server. I tried "startx" and it says "No Screens found". I looked in my xorg.conf file and there are two screens listed at the bottom. It produced a log too, but I can't get my Flash drive to mount so I can't say exactly what it says. It did mention that there were a lot of font directories that didn't exist along with a few other warnings.
