Fedora :: SELinux Blocking Wicd - Couldn't Connect To Dbus Interface And The Wicd Deamon Has Shut Down

Dec 17, 2010

I'v just installed wicd. I can't get it to sart, I get errors saying that wicd couldn't connect to it's dbus interface and the wicd deamon has shut down. Then there's a report from SELinux saying that it's preventing /usr/bin/python "write" access on /etc/dhcp/manager-settings.conf and that access is denied to wicd. I can get wicd to start if I su to root, but I'd like to not have to do that every time I boot. Is there a fix?

Slackware :: Suddenly Lost Several Binaries And Wicd 'couldn't Connect To DBus Client'

Jun 19, 2011

I was playing around with bash scripting and the last thing I remember doing was checking for suid root files. However now I cannot launch sbopkg, tpfand etc and the binaries are nowhere to be seen. I was experimenting with the sticky bit for tpfand so I could load it as a normal user.

Code:
chmod u+s /usr/sbin/tpfand
chmod u-s /usr/sbin/tpfand
However now tpfand is no long in /usr/sbin. But a whereis produces the following results.

Code:
tpfand: /etc/tpfand.conf /etc/tpfand.conf~ /usr/share/tpfand

The same applies for sbopkg, which I have not touched. I think this problem is also related to the wicd error stating it cannot connect to DBus client From these symptoms has anybody experienced anything like this before from tinkering?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Wicd's D-bus Interface / Make It Possible?

Mar 12, 2010

I've installed ubuntu 9.10 using a minimal install and started from there installing the rest of the things I needed.
I'm running KDE4.4 and Wicd 1.6.1.

Problem is, wicd worked fine, but I don't know what happened before I got this annoying problem.

After logging into KDE, wicd asks me for my password in order to connect to the network-device. After filling that in, I get the message code...

As you can see in the logging, internet is working fine. I manually have to start wicd-client and I get an extra wicd-icon in the taskbar showing me the signal strength as it should do.

I've been searching a lot, but can't find anything about this, except a lot of people having the same errormessage, but they have some errors in the wicd.log too.

Security :: CentOS 5 - SELinux Denial Of Wicd / Wpa_supplicant - Get Wireless To Work Properly Using Default NetworkManager

May 11, 2010

I am trying to use CentOS 5.4 to set up a secure laptop, largely because of it's SELinux functionality. Unfortunately I couldn't get wireless to work properly using the default NetworkManager so I installed wicd. Initially it buggered up my whole installation but after relabelling files using SEL I can now use my system again. but.. I can't use it with SELinux enabled, as it denies the required accesses for wicd to work. I also get similar SELinux denials for wpa_supplicant. A couple of snippets from /var/log/audit/audit.log -

Debian :: Wicd Cannot Connect To Wireless?

May 2, 2011

I recently installed wicd on a notebook with Squeeze. I can connect to the wireless network at my place. However I cannot connect at my friend's place. It timed out with the message: "Connection failed. Cannot obtain ip address."

It is a Thomson router/modem and the key is a 10 digit 64bit Hex. I did not see 64bit Hex option in wicd. So, I tried all 3 WEP options and none of them worked. We can connect to the same network with another computer with Squeeze and NM and also with Windows. This is the first time I am using wicd.

General :: NM And WICD Cannot Connect To WEP / WPA 2 Wireless

Sep 27, 2009

Newish to linux, been using Ubuntu for about a year, moved onto Sabayon 4.2 now. I also have another laptop with Kubuntu that is using Network Manager, it has no problem connecting to my wireless, one wireless uses WEP and one uses WPA 2. When my main laptop used Ubuntu it was using Network Manager, that connected with no problem. However Sabayon seems to have a problem. Initially I thought it was the DVD that I used to install it in, but after re-burning it and installing from fresh the problem still remains. What happens is that NM when connecting to a wireless prompts for a passkey, I enter it in and it fails right away.

This happens for WEP and WPA. If the network is unsecure then it connects with no problem. So I emerged WICD 1.6 to see if that would work, it hangs on 'Obtaining IP Address'. If I put static IP then it connects, but this cant be an option as at my University campus I cant set a static IP. I have tried to find the log file for NM, but cannot locate it. I understand that it should be located in /var/log/daemon.log, but daemon.log does not exist on my system. I checked every NM directory and could not find any log files. I have tried changing the settings in WICD to no effect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Wireless Using Wicd?

Jun 25, 2011

I am running Natty on a Lenovo T410. I can connect to wireless with no problem using the panel applet but not using wicd. syslog shows it trying to get a DHCP address and finally timing out with no lease offers. I think a big clue is that if I monitor wlan0 using wireshark I get no traffic at all when it tries to connect, whereas with the applet I see the dhcp traffic. It seems as though wicd is connecting to the wrong wlan0. Running "dhclient wlan0" directly gives the same behavior as wicd. I need to use wicd because I typically run enlightenment so can't use the ubuntu applet.

Networking :: Wicd Will Not Connect To Particular Wireless Internet

Dec 25, 2010

I'm at a family member's house for the holiday and was trying to use their wifi. Its a WEP connection (I tried to tell them to change but they won't listen). In the wicd connection manager, I see their network, set the encryption to WEP (passphrase), enter the password, and hit connect. It says bringing up the card, checking authentication, then gets to Acquiring IP address, sits there for a minute, then times out saying unable to connect.

I know I used the right password because it passed the Authenticating part (tested with a wrong password that hangs at this point). I know that my wifi card works because I used a store's unsecured wifi connection through wicd. I know the wifi network works because my brother's windows netbook can get on just fine. I'm running through the same router right now with a wire instead. Why I can't connect wirelessly?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wicd Won't Connect After Suspend / Resume?

Apr 10, 2010

i just installed ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on my acer aspireone ao532h netbook, and so far, it's been working beautifully. much better than the windows 7 starter edition that came with the machine. the only problem i've experienced so far had to do with the wireless connection. initially, the connection would drop during certain types of activities (e.g. downloading updates or programs, or even streaming videos videos) and the network manager would freeze so completely that i'd have to hard reboot. that seems to have been fixed by installing wicd (following a suggestion here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1135723&page=2), meaning that it hasn't disconnected in the several hours since i've been using it. however, wicd has a different problem: it disconnects after a suspend / resume cycle. this requires a reboot to fix also, as not only does it disconnect, but it looses awareness of the network altogether. obviously, this could be a real headache on a netbook that gets closed and opened frequently.

Ubuntu Networking :: WICD Will Not Connect Without Network-manager?

Jul 23, 2010

I'm trying to use wicd instead of network manager because I want a "no fuss" way to use wireless on wmii. However, wicd will not find any networks unless network-manager has been run and has connected to a network since startup. If it hasn't connected to a wireless network, the wicd will find no networks, and iwlist won't provide a list of networks either.

This seems to mean that network-manager is doing something to the interface when it connects that needs to be done to make it usable, but I'm not sure what it is or how exactly to find out. I do know that the interface (eth2) will not appear in ifconfig if network manager hasn't connected, which I assume means that it hasn't been brought up. ifconfig eth2 up makes it show up, but I still can't connect with wicd. What can I do?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, generic 2.6.32-22 kernel, MacBook 5,5 using the Broadcom STA driver. (more details below)

Code:
*-network
description: Wireless interface
product: BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0

Slackware :: Upgraded WICD - Cannot Connect To Wireless Point

May 24, 2011

I just upgraded to 13.37, and for some reason wicd now cannot connect to my wireless point. It keeps saying the password is wrong, when I know for an absolute fact that it is correct (even changed the password to '1' just to make sure, and no dice. Which is weird because even though its the exact same version of wicd, and not only that, it no longer seems to be able to see networks with my built in card, so having to use a USB card. Anyway, googling turned up very little. Seems to be a common problem across distros, and some people reported that downgrading to 1.6.x fixes it.

So, I ran
Code:
removepkg wicd
And it uninstalled wicd. Downloaded wicd-1.6.2.1-x86_64-1.txz from a 13.0 mirror and did

Code:
installpkg wicd-1.6.2.1-x86_64-1.txz
While in the correct directory. It installed, and I ran wicd. But checking the version number when it loaded, it says its 1.7.0 again.

Not really sure why this happens. I'm assuming there's some remnant of wicd that removepkg doesn't dump, and its preventing me from installing this older version of wicd. What do I need to do for this? If anyone has a surefire way to make 1.7 work again, that would be fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network-manager And Wicd Can See But Not Connect To Network

Jul 10, 2010

I recently put Linux on a Thinkpad T40 I got. The wireless card works out of the box--I can see nearby networks. However, I can't connect to mine. network-manager would try (spin spin spin), fail, ask for the password, and then go back to the beginning and repeat indefinitely. This happened to me on a different computer, and on that one all I had to do was use wicd instead of network-manager. So I installed wicd, but it's not working either--it hangs at "Obtaining IP address".

I've found many, many threads with people who had the same problem, but none of their fixed worked for me.

I also tried to get wifi going manually, using this guide, but that didn't work.

Fedora Security :: Selinux Policy Blocking Outbound Ports For Sshd

May 25, 2011

Tried google and searching this forum to no avail. Under Fedora 14, there is an selinux policy which blocks sshd from making outbound connections on port 80 or 443. This can occur when a client box tries to tunnel through the ssh connection for encrypted access to the web.

While I did manage to allow this happen by creating a permissive domain for sshd with this command:

Code:

The preferred way would be to allow sshd to make connection on other ports with a similar command that does not seem to work:

Is this the correct way of allowing an outbound port connection for the sshd daemon?

It had happened before that it took some tries to connect to a new network, but, after a few tries, it would connect. And then it would always connect at once. But now, it always gets stucked on the obtainment of the ip address. The same routher gives me a perfect wired connection... My wife has Ubuntu and she got it working right away, so it's not a password or router problem...

Ubuntu :: Wicd Can't Get Online?

Jun 5, 2010

my problem: i am using unbuntu 9.10 on a dell 1420 inspiron laptop. i wanted to uprage to the new version of linux "lynx" . while i was doing that a problem occurred while downloading the new packages. It said that what i have already downloaded would be saved but i had to restart the download--so far no real problem. When i restarted my computer, wicd wanted to access my internet card interface, or something like that, and asked for my password, i gave it, and then wicd said it couldnt connect to my internet card and i needed to check the wicd error log. everytime i restart my computer i go through the same process and always end up with NO INTERNET CONNECTION WHATSOEVER, not just wireless, wired connections dont work.

i hope that was clear. the reason i was upgrading to lynx was because wicd had problems in the first place, but now i cant get on the net in any way with my laptop--so how do i fix the problem? should i burn an iso of the new linux and then stick that on my machine to uprgade? or is there another way. The main goal of mine is to have a laptop with linux that can wirelessly access the internet.

If i didnt provide enough info, i'm sorry(i'm young, but computers are pretty baffling sometimes) or if you want me to do something i can post the results, but i dont know any codes and can't find the error log for wicd.
