Ubuntu :: System Won't Boot, Can't Find Safe Mode, Can't Launch Recovery Mode

Nov 18, 2010

I attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

Fedora :: Can't Boot System Even Into Init Mode 3?

I upgraded to Fedora 15 using preupgrade after I failed to upgrade or install it clean through DVD. But, after the preupgrade process finished, I can't boot my system even into init mode 3. I am able to boot into the init mode 1 and can see that many of the packages have been upgraded to fc15. I tried to start the x server from init mode 1. My nVidia screen even popped up. But after that the screen went totally blanked.

OpenSUSE :: Prevent Web Browsers From Using The System's Default Colors?

Aug 1, 2009

I have two problems related to color scheme. First, is there any way to prevent web browsers from using the system's default colors? I use a dark scheme, specifically Obsidian Coast in KDE and Industrial in GTK. This doesn't behave well on web pages in Firefox, Arora, and Konqueror. (Opera is fine.) Sometimes a site's stylesheet will specify a text field's text color to be black, but its background is not specified, so it defaults to black-on-dark-gray. I've also seen such a field's background color specified as white while the text color was not, so it ended up being light-gray-on-white. Is there any way to keep browsers from ruining web pages? Also, even if the stylesheet doesn't specify the colors, the dark text fields and buttons still stick out like a sore thumb on a warm or bright page.

My second problem is this: I have a saved session that brings up my applications every time I log in, but the GTK apps Pidgin and Evolution don't match the GTK color scheme until I quit and start them up again. Is there some way of fixing or working around this problem?

Ubuntu :: Prevent System Freeze Due To High RAM Or CPU Usage

May 1, 2011

I have been using ubuntu for 4 years now on my decent laptop with 2 Gb RAM, dual core centrino, etc etc. Yet, in all those years I have been using this superior OS, I still have to do hard shutdowns because some program runs wild. I have lately 2 scenarios where I have to interfere with the process:

1: amarok crashes and leaves the python script for the gnome shortcut keys running at 100% CPU. Or: thunderbird-bin keeps running after apparently clean close of Thunderbird. That's not really bothering me, I just kill both processes.

The bigger problem is scenario 2: 2: VLC starts eating all my RAM (for no reason), my SWAP starts filling and my computer becomes unusable for 10 minutes. Or: my matlab script is too big and eats up too much RAM -> same. Note: I have nothing against SWAP because at many other times it's very useful

These are stupid and annoying problems where there is an easy solution:

1) automatically kill the stupid process that runs at 100% CPU
2) automatically kill the stupid process that eats up all my RAM

Slackware :: Prevent File System Corruption On Hard Lock-up?

Apr 5, 2010

I've recently had my file system irrecoverably corrupted after a hard lock-up. This has happened to me before, a couple weeks ago, and both times I've had to reinstall. I don't know what is causing the lock-ups (possibly the binary nvidia driver..), but I would like my file system to be intact or at least recoverable next time it happens. What is the "safest" way to mount things?

I'll be using ext3 with data=journal, but I've read that disk write caching combined with a kernel crash or power loss can still screw things up. Supposedly, mounting with barrier=1 helps some, but doesn't work with LVM? Would it be wise to turn off disk write caching completely? I understand there's a performance penalty, but if it helps keep the file system consistent in case of disaster.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Amarok's Gone Silent - How To Fix It

Aug 25, 2010

Amarok's gone silent on me. It used to work fine until recently, even though I haven't done anything I can think of to change this apart from routine software updates. It is only happening to me.Other users on the machine are OK.I can play sound from other applications including Kaffeine, Skype and Audacious. The problem occurs with all file types I have tried, namely mp3 ogg and mpc.

Amarok looks like it's playing when I click play, in that the playback process bar is working and the time elapsed is displayed. Amarok appears as a client in the PulseAudio manager. The only thing I can see that might be odd, apart from the silence, is the big button near the top, level with and the same size as the play/pause button. I can't remember what this button is for. The symbol on it looks odd, as if an animated symbol for volume adjustment got caught on one particular frame. Clicking on this button does nothing either visually or functionally

Debian :: Silent Lenny After 1-3day Uptime?

Apr 14, 2010

This seems like a nicely populated forum so I hope some knowledgeable people happen to see this thread.

I've been encountering this issue where the system will not respond to seemingly anything after being on for generally no shorter than a day but sometimes as long as three days. This has been going on for few months since I only have physical access to the machine for about a day or two once every two weeks. So I'll come to the machine, reboot it, it will be fine for a day; then about a day after I'm away from it, it will not respond in any way. When I am away from it I only have ssh access, but when I'm with it, I have access to anything and everything.

After it locks up into the silent issue I have tried: ssh either remotely or locally, where it will time outPinging from the local network, where I get "ping: sendto: Host is down" a lot and occasionally a "ping: sendto: Host is down"Plugging in a monitor and keyboard, where the monitor never gets a signal no matter what I do on the keyboard. When it isn't locked up into the silent issue and I plug in the keyboard and monitor, the monitor gets a signal right after I hit the spacebar for sure. After the silent issue triggers it's fans still whir, the power light is on and light on the Ethernet port is on (and turns off if I unplug the Ethernet cable, and back on if I plug it back in) like everything was normal but there is no hard drive or network activity (even after unplugging/replugging the Ethernet cable).

After a reboot, all log files have nothing past a certain time and date, which I assume is the time when the silent issue got triggered. My setup is the following: Debian 5.0 "lenny" on an HP ProLiant ML110 G6Using full disk encryption with ext3 which was all set up by the installerIIRC "core" and "minimal" were selected in tasksel during install. I'm sure about "core", not about "minimal". The programs I have running are apticron, ddclient, sshd, fail2ban, screen, php-cgi (php5-cgi), cherokee (from unstable) and rtorrent (from unstable). I can provide a "ps aux" if necessary. The packages from unstable, that I have all set to Pin-Priority 990 in /etc/apt/preferences, are:

[Code]...

I'm pretty sure I don't have ECC memory so I don't think a lockup from a flipped bit is an issue. I'm thinking one thing to test would be to set up some kind of daemon that sends log info over the network to a logging server and compare the latest timestamps of what the daemon sent versus what the latest info on the disk is, and that would show that the issue is with the encrypted disk since things are still functioning in memory but not able to write to disk. If that's the case then I guess it locks up eventually from not being able to read or write something. Does anyone know of something out there like this? Or perhaps a way to do something similar?

Is there something I could do to determine whether this is caused by maybe some kind of kernel panic or by something like the motherboard having issues?

Ubuntu Security :: Prevent Fork Bombs From Bringing The System To Grinding Halt?

Mar 18, 2011

So I am basically just curious about this, but is there a way to prevent fork bombs from bringing the system to grinding halt in Ubuntu, without setting hard limits on the resources available to users? I read about fork bombs on Wikipedia, and being the masochist I am (and not having any unsaved work), I tried entering those 13 characters into terminal. Wow. I have never seen a computer freeze up so fast. What really peaked my curiosity is that the same fork bomb has almost no effect on the performance of Mac OSX (10.6). I know that one can limit the availability of resources to specific users. Is that essentially what Snow Leopard is doing?

Slackware :: Current - Phonon Applications Silent - Muted ?

Jan 2, 2010

I have a very strange problem with Phonon. I am running slackware-current with KDE-4.3.4 on an old PC with CS46xx sound chip. The Phonon backend is Xine. The system is newly installed.

Applications which use the Phonon layer are silent or muted. I am not able to hear anything. Affected is for example Amarok, Dragon Player, Minitube or the Kde Notification system (when playing sounds). What makes the situation strange is the fact, that everything looks pretty fine:

Alsa works excellent and is configured correctly.
KMixer affects the alsa system settings as expected.
Mplayer works, Xine works, mpg321 works.
Inside Kde's system settings -> Multimedia, the Test button works and i can hear the Kde start up melody.
Inside Kde's system settings -> Notifications, the play button for sound events works and plays the given sounds.

The problem appears with a newly created user account, too.

What i also tried was to compile [url]. The output looks ok to me, too. No errors and ogg and mp3 support is available.

Last but not least i tried the Python coding tutorial at [url]. The fact, that this works, unsettles me totally.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mobile Broadband Keeps Disconnecting, Network Manager Remains Silent?

Apr 18, 2010

I have a broadband mobile modem iCon 225 (Option) with SiMobil provider (Slovenia). I run ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). I connect to the internet without problem. After a few minutes, the modem lights start signaling that there is no connection, but the network manager shows connected status. I have to reconnect the network manager to regain connection. After about a dozen times of reconnecting like this, I have to reboot the system, as it won't connect, even if I unplug and replug the modem.

I've noticed these frequent disconnects have started a few days ago. I did experience disconnects in the past, but as nearly often as this. I can't attribute disconnects to activity/inactivity, as they seem to happen no matter what I do.
