Networking :: Cannot Seem To Setup Gateway To Route Properly

Jul 24, 2011

I have setup a second machine with slackware 13.37, it is a "supermicro" which I picked up though my work. the idea was to set it up as a gateway and gradually expand my knowledge of sub networking, iptables, forwarding and the like. after a couple nights of forum searching and "o'reilly" book reading I am still unable to get a proper route working thru the "supermicro" to our dsl router.

What is setup?: I will start from my main machine simply calling it slackbox
slackbox: has two ethernet cards which i have given static ip's to
eth0 and eth1
eth0 ( is connected to a switch and then to our dsl router, it is working, I am using right now to work on this forum.
eth1 ( is connected to the "supermicro" thru a cross-over cable, it also is working, pinging the "supermicro" works.
default gateway on slackbox is set to be (the supermicro)

I only set slackbox's default as when testing to see if the supermicro gateway will work
supermicro: also has two ethernet cards which i have given static ip's to
eth0 (this is the card with the cross-over cable connected)
pinging (the slackbox) works.
eth1 is connected to our switch as well, it is working, pinging our dsl router works.
default gateway on supermicro is set in rc.inet.conf to be (which is our dsl router)

All my machines have two ethernet cards. This has just made it easy for me to test the setup while still having internet access on slackbox. Yet when testing the gateway from slackbox thru supermicro I am getting "Destination Host Unreachable".

Networking :: Routing For A VPN Gateway Setup?

Dec 17, 2010

I've been trying to setup an IPSec connection between two routers, but am having trouble with the actual packet routing.

My setup currently is two local networks ([netLANA] and[netLANB]) that are connected to their own routers ( and respectively). The routers are both connected to the[netWAN] network. I wish to setup an IPSec connection between the two routers, to act in tunnel mode between the two local networks.

The first router is a linux box (on the netLANA network) that I am setting up using the ipsec-tools, and the other is a Netgear ProSafe FVS318G (on the netLANB). I've set them both up to have the same configuration for IPSec. Also, on the linux router I have setup a route like this:

$ route add -net wlan0

So that all traffic destined for the netLANB network will be routed to the wlan0 interface (netWAN in this case, and therefore over the tunnel).

My problem is that if I ping from any host on netLANA, I can see the ICMP reply comes back to the linux router, but it doesn't get back to the original host.

From the linux router, here is the tcpdump of the ping:

$ tcpdump -n -S -i any
17:06:26.308353 IP > ICMP echo request, id 1036, seq 1, length 64
17:06:26.308780 IP > ESP(spi=0x0ea08914,seq=0x2f), length 116
17:06:26.316287 IP > ESP(spi=0x0be1036c,seq=0x2f), length 116
17:06:26.316287 IP > ICMP echo reply, id 1036, seq 1, length 64

May 11, 2010

setup 2 gateway in my email server(opensuse).

now i wan to setup 2 internet lines for my email server, which mean that either one of the line is down, i still can receive mail from another line.

Internet line 1 = ISP1
Internet line 2 = ISP2

my email server got 3 nic which...

eth0 = ( (from ISP1 GW
eth1 = ( (from ISP2 GW 192.168..2.1)
eth2 = ( (connect to local LAN)

now existing GW set on the server is, mail receive and send through ISP1. now we wish to set somethings that once the ISP1 line is down, the server will auto switch to ISP2 gateway and continue send and receive mail without manually change of settings

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup Server As Router / Gateway?

May 29, 2011

I have been searching google for a while now and have not found exactly what I am looking for. I would like to use my fresh install of ubuntu server 11.04 as my router/gateway for my home. I am not an expert at linux by any means but I can usually figure stuff out. I believe I need iptables, bind, and a few others probally. It eventually will also be a samba server but I have done a little with samba before. I do have 2 network cards, my router at the moment is starting to die and would love to have a more powerful router. I would also like to figure out how to do port forwarding in the router, as well as be able to see the load on the network cards. Maybe there is a program to show usage by user? As well as be able to do packet pritorization.

I have 1 root-server with 2 NICs, both having their own internet IP addresses:

Code: eth0 = 8x.x.x.183
eth2 = 8x.x.x.205 We only have one gateway on that network:
Code: gateway = 8x.x.x.1 We want to use eth2 for postfix + http, and eth0 for all the other stuff.

How can this be setup ? With route / ip route / iptables ?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup Routes For A Gateway That Resides On A Different Subnet

Jul 29, 2011

I'm trying to setup routes for a gateway that resides on a different subnet. Our ISP leased us a block of IPs and told us to route through the current gateway, which is on a different subnet than our current block of addresses. To test, I've enabled one of the new addresses on one of the existing machines, which works. That machine has an address on the same subnet as the gateway, however.

The gateway address is One of the new addresses I'm trying to use is, netmask=, broadcast= Obviously, I can't just specify that gateway in /etc/network/interfaces without some routing, which is where the trouble I'm having is. The machine I'm trying to set this up on is part of 2 networks - one internal, on two different NICs.

Fedora Networking :: Can't Connect To Wireless Gateway

May 20, 2009

I've just installed fedora 10 on my Dell Inspiron 1525, and I can't connect to my wireless net. I know how to manually enter the SSID (and have no clue what a BSSID is), MAC address, and I know it's infastructure (well, it's not ad-hoc, so it must be).

The problem is, my router uses a 64-bit encryption protocol, and there's no '64-bit' key option under Wireless Security's dropdown. Is there any way around this, aside from either changing the encryption protocol, or plugging it in manually (neither of which are options)?

Fedora Networking :: Manual Ip Won't Keep Gateway / Sort It?

Aug 31, 2009

I setup my computer to share printers on home network. So I set my F11 PC for manual ip & it works fine for print sharing but now I can't get to the Internet. I noticed under manual settings that every time I set the gateway & try to apply it, it jumps back to all 0's. If I set it to DHCP, I get to the Internet no problem. I just have 2 wireless configs right now 1 for printing & 1 for Internet but it would be a lot easier if I could just use the one manual setting & get it to keep the gateway setting. I'm using a Linksys WRT54G router. And I do select a manual IP outside the range the router uses for DHCP.

Networking :: Unable To Set Gateway When Second Network Adapter Fitted

Feb 12, 2010

When a second network adapter is fitted, the boot script fails to configure the default gateway. Here's from /var/log/messages with DEBUG_ETH_UP="yes" configured for the boot script Code: Feb 13 10:22:23 ps1 logger: /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1: /sbin/route add default gw metric 1 Feb 13 10:22:23 ps1 logger: SIOCADDRT: No such process

After boot the same command failed with the same message when done by root logged in via ssh but succeeded when run from the console After removing the second network adapter, the boot script is able to configure the gateway.

EDIT: or not. The problem now seems intermittent Now with only the onboard network adapter the same "SIOCADDRT: No such process" error is logged during boot and the "/sbin/route add default gw" command fails at the console too. Am experimenting with disabling the onboard adapter and fitting the NIC.

EDIT 2: definitely intermittent. Just rebooted with no hardware changes; same error during boot and route -n showed no default gateway but "/sbin/route add default gw" worked.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Connection Is Not Working Properly

Jan 27, 2011

I have a dual boot (XP Pro and F13) laptop. This laptop has a Ralink RT2501USB Wireless Adapter which works perfectly fine on XP. But when it comes to F13, adapter only works properly when I am physically next to my router. When I move few feet away the strength of the connection drops from 100% to around 40%. But even though 40% should be okay for slow connection to internet, I can't get any internet access at all. I have tried three different routers with same results on each.

When I boot same machine with windows XP, all works fine. I can move to any part of my house and I will still have the connection without any issues.I can see that RT73 driver is installed if I check in add remove program under system.I am not an expert but to me its seems that the drivers on F13 for RT2501USB are not as good as on windows?
