Fedora Networking :: Enabling Wifi On An Acer 1360
Dec 24, 2009
trying to bring back to useful ife an old laptop: an Acer 1360.
I have installed kmod-ndiswrapper to assist me. The laptop has one of these:
Quote:
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Linksys, A Division of Cisco Systems [AirConn] INPROCOMM IPN 2220 Wireless LAN Adapter (rev 01)
I have grabbed the Windows drivers for this card and installed:
Quote:
[graham@old-acer ~]$ ndiswrapper -l
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.
neti2220 : driver installed
device (17FE:2220) present
lsmod shows:
Quote:
ndiswrapper 158060 0
Looking good to me - (is that conf file required an issue?) but Network Manager doesn't recognise that I have any wlan running at all. The Wifi button on the laptop is on but 'red' and not 'green' for up and running.
Um. Next steps? I suppose I could buy a compatible wifi card and slap it in?

This may be more suited for the networking forums, but I figured Community Cafe would be well rounded enough for someone to tell me if this is even possible (with minimal configuration that is). There are a few places I travel where I only have a wired connection to the Internet (no wifi), but when this happens is there a simple way to create an adhoc network so wireless devices can route through my computer and to the network? Reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting an iPad or iPod Touch which have wireless connections, but in the cases where my laptop is using a wired ethernet connection and the wireless card isn't used, I'd like to create an adhoc wireless network that'll let such wireless devices work.

I've recently installed Jaunty on my Acer 5920 and I'm in love. Yet I can't get the wifi to work with my pathetic mortal knowledge of gnu/linux. Every time I enter the password to log into my wifi router it immediately asks me for it again not accepting it and I don't have clue what to do about it. I'm using a Acer 5920 with a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card

I have a problem with wifi network, installed ubuntu a few days ago.I have bcm 4312 wireless adapter, activated the broadcom STA driver, until this moment i didnt update the OS,just out of the box OS, with activated wireless STA driver. After reboot ,the wifi was working, it found some networks, but it wont connect.Im trying to connect to a WPA2-personal , AES encryption network,i type in the password, im 100% sure i type it correctly, but it wont connect, it just asks for password again and again.I was thinking maybe i should update the OS, and i did it, after the update, i checked the STA driver, it was activated, working fine, but this time Network Manager didnt find any networks,as if there is no wireless device. How can i fix this ?

Fresh install Ubuntu 10.10 on Acer Aspire 5050 with new hard drive. I struggled to turn the Wifi's button turn on but led light always on. It does not detect wifi driver. I installed ndiswrapper to get Acer's Winxp driver: netathr.inf by Windows Wireless Drivers from Ubuntu Software download. It's same thing as ndiswrapper.

I can get into the BIOS just fine but cannot find anything such as NX or Exucute Disable mode( on or off) Does anyone have any ideas? I contacted Acer support and they may be able to help only if I pay for their support. AS of now I have Ubuntu 10.4 installed and upgraded to 10.10 but have black screen with message about (NX) or Execute Disable in bios. The message says---This CPU is family 6, model 37, and has NX capabilities but is unable to use these protective features because the BIOS is configured to disable the capability. Please enable this in your BIOS. I have windows 7 professional on one partition and Ubuntu on the other partition. I can still access Ubuntu 10.4. but have the black screen on 10.10

when I tried to configure network I came across a problem that the enable button on top of network manager GUI is disabled. So alternatively I enabled it with ifconfig command. I also configured DNS servers. But the problem is whenever I reboot my machine. I have to reactivate the network from terminal and give the DNS servers again, because DNS settings are not saved.

In Ubuntu 10.10, with the Nvidia Current driver (260.19.06), I have the option to set 1360 x 768 resolution (via gksudo nvidia-settings), but it doesn't work. The screen goes blank for about 10 seconds and then comes back on, reset to 1024 x 768.
I've searched this forum and internet in general for the past 5 hours but have not found a solution that worked.

I've one lenovo 3000 g430 4152 laptop on which i have windows but previously installed debian 5.03 and for enabling the wireless i've to download broadcom b43legacy and install it by compiling because the backports kernel doesn't work with lenovo and after installing debian accidently switched of the wireless by the slide button on laptop
but on next boot i was not able to enable the wireless either by the slide button or fn+f5 which is the key for enabling it the wireless then on some forum i got advise that i can only re-enable by installing windows because lenovo drivers are available for only windows for this model... my question is that is there any solution for it in debian and also there is one more problem that i've to press fn+f8 twice on each boot for enabling the touchpad...

I don't know what I'm trying to achieve falls into 'routing' or 'Bridging'???I have two network ports (with static IP ) and I would like to forward RX packets of one to the other.
I have done this in Windows by enabling a service called 'routing'.Is there something similar in Fedora 11? I am pretty sure there are a few thread explaining these but I am just not educated enough to find one that makes sense to me, so Please excuse me for starting a redundant thread and point me to it?

I have an Acer Aspire 5720z notebook/laptop, and got slackware 13.1 x64 installed. Everything works like a charm ( touchpad, keyboard, screenresolution ), but I a problem with the wireless 'card'. When I just installed it (as dualboot to the MS Vista it came equipped with) wicd didn't function. Took me ages to find out the standard Atheros AR5001 thing is fully supported under Linux (hence the very few topics on the card ) But still: ifconfig or iwconfig wlan0 up gave me an error 132 message, which through google I learned: hardware switch is set to off.
Anyway: There's this litte button on the first row of 'special' keys, with a blinkenlights (led ) that indicates that Wlan is on (or there is wlan activity). Under Vista, it blinks and flashes with Wlan activity, Under Linux: Nothing, Not during Boot, not during never! Under Vista, when pressing the button, the Wlan is switched off, and on: The internet connections are lost, and when switched on, network activity is restored. Attention please: It's NOT a switch, just a button. It took me some time to give up getting the Wlan going under linux, rebooted into Vista, noticed the light did flip on,.. and under Vista no problem. I rebooted in to Linux again, and voila: WORKING! Happy! Succes! Profit! Nope: the next day: nothing. I didn't press the button. I could press until forever, but under Linux: nothin. Rebooted into windows, had to switch it on, logged out, rebooted into Linux: Working again.
To cut a long story short: the button doesn't work under Linux. Since it's a ' soft ' button, can I switch it on by a command? Since it apparently switches itself off randomly ( maybe sleep, hybernate or any low power state auto switches it off ) and I can only flip it on in Vista.. not the most desireable way to work.

There are a few ' quick start ' buttons next to it ( which I don't ever use ) to start Internet,Mail ,Bluetooth), dummy buttons with leds for hdd activity, caps and scroll lock and some acer only keys with no funtion under linux either )

I haven't had a problem with this yet, but today I was online via my wifi connection and then the network center said there was no connection. My modem said I had full bars, and I tried restarting both the modem and the laptop, but nothing. The internet works if I plug in the ethernet cable, but will not pick up the wifi signal. I called my service provider and for 2 hours they couldn't figure out how to connect it because it has Linux. They tried to set up a new password protected network because they said the modem was working fine, so they had me delete the old network from the computer... but when I tried to set up a new network it still was not picking up a wireless signal. Ive tried flicking the switch on the front of the laptop and it still will not pick up a signal. Please help me out with this... I have no clue how to use Linux!

I'm having great difficulty with networking on a new Acer 5516 laptop (smolt):Firstly, the NIC card isn't recognized out-of-the-box so I followed Ubuntu forum thread. No luck*
I installed the appropriate Broadcom drivers. No luck*
* However, when I plugged in a USB Ralink DWL-G122 wireless adapter, this worked and, incredibly, the internal Broadcom BCM4312 started to work (see below). Even more bizarre, after turning the laptop off and unplugging the power, upon reboot with the Ralink adapter plugged in, the NIC was on and I did a yum update through eth0.
Sadly, none of the laptops internal networking works unless the Ralink adapter is plugged in. In fact, the gnome desktop is almost unworkable and unresponsive without the Ralink adapter up. Further, I sure that this was the reason the initial F11 install was frustrating with periodic unresponsiveness.
I've tried installing both F11 386 and x64 and have booted with a F10 live USB with no luck either.
I'm contemplating trying Ubuntu next but really would like to know if someone has been successful with Fedora.

I just did a dual boot with OpenSuSE 11.2 and Windows 7. They both work perfect but for some reason the wireless (intel wifi 5100 AGN) and my wired network card (Atheros AR8131 Gigabyte controller)do not work in opensuse. Now the problem is that I do not have a clue about linux and therefore I don't know how to fix the problem. I searched the forum and I tried these commands "sudo /sbin/ifdown eth0" and "sudo /sbin/ifup wlan0" and both says something like device not connected/present (can't remeber exactly).

Have a dedicated Fedora 10 laptop so that I can learn everything I need to know. I am using an Acer Aspire 3000 with a fresh copy of Fedora 10 and KDE
The Aspire 3000 has a built in broadcom wireless card, with windows XP you activate the wireless using an LED button on the front of the laptop, but with Fedora I can't seem to do this.
I have found a couple of threads to fix this error on Ubuntu but nothing about fedora. I don't want to change OS as I have just about got this system running like clockwork. I have left the wireless until last as the normal LAN works fine.
Here is the result of my iwconfig:

sometime back when installing FC10, i tried installing ndis wrapper, and later i installed the broadcom driver bcm431 (i think). also i didn't remove the ndis wrapper.
all was fine untill a yesterday when ndis wrapper and some related packages got updated which somehow caused wireless to stop working. lspci showed the hardware present.
to get it to work, i did a yum erase ndis-wrapper, followed by a reboot.
it may not be the most elegent way, but it worked for me.
hardware specs:acer aspire 4720Z (mine has broadcom wireless, others may have atheros)

I have installed Fedora 12 on my laptop and subsequently spent most of the day trying to get the wireless connection to work. Looks like I am not alone with Wireless issues Through searching and reading today I think the problem lies with the fact that the wireless on/off switch is not working. Under Windows, when I press the wifi toggle switch it starts flashing orange. I haven't managed to get it to do anything under Fedora.
