Red Hat / Fedora :: Su Command Gives Relocation Error

Mar 7, 2011

I am running Fedora kernel 2.6.35.11-83-fc14.x86-64 with Gnome 2.32.0 on a Acer Aspire Timeline X with Intel i5 processor. After running 'yum update', su gives an error in the Terminal Window:su: relocation error: su: symbol pam_chauthtok, version LIBPAM_1.0 not defined in file libpam.so.0 with link time reference

After the same update, Evolution stopped working. It does start, the menu (File-Edit-Search, etc.) does appear, but in the main window only "null" appears.I try to solve as much problems myself (great way of learning), but I could not find a good place to start with this one. Can you help?

Software :: Date / Relocation Error / Receive Error During Boot Up

Apr 1, 2010

I just completed migrating a Redhat 9 server to new hardware and a virtual machine. If I attempt to alter the time or date with the date command I receive the following message. "date: relocation error:/lib/tls/lib pthread.so.0: symbol __resp, version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in the file libc.so.6 with link time reference"

This also comes up during the bootup process along with "sleep: relocation error". I have never done I migration like this before and would consider myself a novice to linux. This server runs an old software package and I would prefer not having to totally reload it. The software we run appears to be run fine at first glance but I don't want to roll this out until all errors are resolved..

CentOS 5 :: GLIBC And Libc.so.6 - Relocation Error

Mar 17, 2009

/usr/dlc/bin/_progress: relocation error; symbol errno, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time referrence

And the solution offered is:

But the problem still exists.

If I use 2.4.20 I get an error about shared "something" in library and I cannot use command line like using command as ll, ls, mkdir but if I change that to 2.6.18 I get the error above but I can now use these commands: ll, ls, mkdir, etc.

I'm using Progress 9.1D and the application was compiled using CENTOS 4.4. Now I just copied the Progress 9.1D as is to new server HP Proliant ML110 G5 with CENTOS 5.2 installed.

Copying Progress 9.1D to other computers (IDE and not SATA drivers) with CENTOS 4.4 installed has no problem. Everything runs.

Could this be due to GLIBC version. Progress application was compiled using GLIBC version 2.3.4 but my GLIBC now is version 2.5.

If this is the case, can I just copy GLIBC version 2.3.4 and put it in my ProliantML110G5 server? If not how do I do it? Downloading and installing etc.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Panic Not Syncing / Relocation Error

Apr 15, 2010

I tried to upgrade Empathy from 2.28 to 2.30 via Synaptic but the upgrade always failed as there were some errors to do with the dependencies (libglib2.0* and others). The dependency issues were odd as it told me that Empathy wanted to install files that were older than the existing ones. So I decided to uninstall Empathy and all its dependencies, and re-install the whole (updated) package and it's dependencies from scratch via Synaptic. After the install, Ubuntu told me that there were broken packages and Update Manager kept on popping up asking me to run a partial upgrade to fix these broken packages. Well, the partial upgrade also failed (due to the same dependency issues , I suspect) so I decided that I'll run a full system update (as Update Manager had being bugging me prior to my failed Empathy upgrade). 486 Mb later, Ubuntu no longer wants to boot - it freezes on the splash screen.

When I start it in recovery mode, it spews out the various processes being loaded. Trying to run earlier kernels (2.6.31-19 / 17 / 14) from GRUB, in both normal mode and recovery mode does not seem to help.I am running Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-20-generic.

a) Is the problem to do with the kernel - did the update try to update the kernel as I note that there is a new stable release (2.6.33-2)? However, GRUB still indicates that the kernel is 2.6.31-20.
b) Would updating the kernel to 2.6.33-2 help? If so, how do I do this?
c) Is the problem, as I suspect, to do with the libglib* files? If so, how do I fix it?

Fedora :: Kaffeine DVB Will Not Play Display / Resolve This?

Jun 30, 2010

I had a fully working fc12 using Kaffeine to get DVB-T using a Nova T-500.
After installing and updating latest fc13 (and Kaffeine) I cannot get it to see the TV. It has scanned Ok and the TV card is detected OK in warm state.
As I also had no sound I looked at the differences in the sound GUI between my fc12 and 13.

Kaffeine is detected in fc12 but not shown in fc13.

Just tried Totem Movie Player and tried to tune the DVB-T but it gives a gnome DVB failure, so my problem is in fc13/Gnome.

Could someone advise me as wht I can try so that I can continue using Fedora?

But when I do a channel scan (which I've tried using a couple of local sources and the AUTO option), I don't see any channels. I've tried various filter options, no joy.Using the supplied Windows software, a scan gives me about 20 digital channels.

Fedora :: Playing MP3 Files In Kaffeine With Good Sound Quality?

Dec 13, 2009

I have worked the whole day to get an multimedia player that plays all format's. After trying vlc, realplayerGold, Xine, Kaffeine, Rhythmbox and Totem, I ended up at kaffeine.

I virtually installed al gstreamer-plugins,, like:
Code:
Dependencies Resolved
Package Arch Version Repository Size
Installing:
gstreamer-plugins-bad i586 0.10.13-7.fc11 rpmfusion-free-updates 1.1 M

gstreamer-plugins-bad-extras i586 0.10.13-7.fc11 rpmfusion-free-updates 69 k .....

Transaction Summary
Install 1 Package(s)
Upgrade 0 Package(s)
Total download size: 167 k
Is this ok [y/N]: y

It seems I can play at least an mpeg movie, and mp3. But I find the quality of sound of the mp3 in kaffeine very poor. Yes, it plays, but some mp3's are struggling the first 10 seconds or so,, eg, Shivers - Armin van Buuren. When I play the same mp3 in xmms, it plays like a charm. That's not what I want, I want an all-round multimedia player. Xine does the job very well,, like xmms,, and plays also the mpeg, but unfortunately, xine shows an error message about a segmentation fault, upon exiting xine. Any hint to play mp3 files in kaffeine like xmms does?

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

Software :: MailScanner Not Starting - Error

Jun 16, 2011

We are running MailScanner 4.83.4-1 on a CentOS 5.6 64-bit distribution. The status of MailScanner was checked hourly via the check_mailscanner script, and normally the e-mailed result was:

Quote:

Which indicated the process was running without issue.

The server in question sits outside the company firewall, and was configured to deliver e-mail messages directly to their intended recipients. Our company recently changed its policy concerning external e-mail servers to require them to send their e-mails to their destinations via an e-mail gateway server. Consequently, the server was reconfigured to relay its messages to the gateway, and is no longer delivering messages directly to their recipients.

When the change was made, I noticed the check_mailscanner script was sending a new message which read as follows:

Quote:

I have tried starting and restarting the MailScanner software via the /etc/init.d/MailScanner script. The output of the script seems to indicate that MailScanner starts, but a subsequent check for the application via the ps -ef |grep MailScanner command shows the command is not running.

I checked the /var/log/maillog file for any reference to this when I did the restart of MailScanner, and the excerpt shown below coincides with the time that I ran the script:
