Fedora Installation :: Unable To Install F 13 On Laptop Using Live Usb

Oct 2, 2010

1. Unable to install F 13 on my laptop using the fedora live usb i had. It worked from the Live CD though, but the 3d effects don't work.

2. Does F 14 have native support for NVIDIA 5100m card? This is the card present on my laptop its based of the Quadro 880 chip

I meddled a bit with the PAE kernel and tried to install the driver off the nvidia website and now the system does even boot..

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot From Live USB On HP Laptop

Jul 26, 2011

A few weeks ago I installed Fedora Linux 64-bit on my HP dv4-1428ca laptop which was running Windows 7. At that time I created a Live USB using the fedora-live usb tool and it booted fine. A couple days ago I decided to try out openSUSE, so I downloaded the 64-bit live-cd image and tried to create a live usb using the SUSEStudio ImageWrite provided in the documentation. The tool kept giving me an error message, so I decided to try unetbootin instead. However, when I tried to boot the live usb on my HP laptop, it presented me with the message.

"SYSLINUX 4.04 EDD 2011-04-18 COPYRIGHT (C) 1994-2011 H. PETER ANVIN ET AL" with a blinking cursor and nothing else. I've tried a variety of alternative programs for creating live USB's (pendrivelinux, linux live usb creator, unebootin), and verified the checksum of the iso file for openSUSE 11.4 64-bit, and still was not able to get past the "SYSLINUX..." message on my HP laptop. However, the live USB does boot on the other computers in my house. Interestingly, if I create a live USB using the tool provided by Fedora, it will boot fine. However the Fedora Live USB tool cannot be used for other distros.

Specs:
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core
4GB Ram
ATI Radeon 3200 Graphics
320 GB Hard Drive

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install Kubuntu 10.4 - Unable To Find A Medium Containing A Live File System

Aug 15, 2010

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:

BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.

He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install On Laptop

Apr 30, 2011

I cant install ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. I downloaded the ubuntu iso from its official site. I tried several ways to install it like :within windows, through usb, through burning the iso but neither of them worked. When i boot from usb or CD there's just a black screen after the choosing one of the options (i.e. try ubuntu, install ubuntu, etc) and nothing happens. So I had to shut it down by holding the switch after about 20 minutes. But it works on PC without a problem. I have installed it on my PC. If i install it within windows, it completes the installation and then whan I reboot it , it says completing remaining installation and the black screen appears.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install 11.04 On Laptop?

Jul 5, 2011

I am trying to install 11.04 on an older Averatec laptop. (AMD Athlon XP-M 2200+, 512 MD DDR, 60 GB HD) I tried Live CD and alternative. They both freeze up during installation. Live CD is definitely good as I can open Ubuntu as a trial on another computer. Booting as a trial on the laptop also freezes up.

Tried boot parameters "nomodeset" and "acpi=off" without success. Reformated disk several times with dban which hasn't helped. Even tried xbuntu in case there wasn't enough memory. That froze up as well.

Debian Installation :: Unable To Install In HP DV7 Laptop (ACPI Error)

Jan 30, 2011

I have tried both DVD and CD (both are MD5-checked) of both Lenny 5.0.8 and Squeeze RC on my HP DV7-3074CA. (a.k.a 3085DX)When I choose a graphic install, it just hangs after loading the initial files. When I choose the normal install, It gives the following error:

[1.383207] ACPI: EC: Input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction.

Is there a boot command I can input to override this? I tried removing the battery slot, but the only difference is that that message does not appear, but the setup hangs anyway.

UPDATING:Tried "pci=noacpi" but that did lead to a kernel panic.[1.547564] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

OpenSUSE Install :: Live CD BOOT/INSTALL With HCL K38 Laptop

Mar 16, 2011

I am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.

Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.

I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.

I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.

How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Will Not Recognize Live Disk

May 25, 2010

I'm install it onto my laptop (its about 4 years old - a Sony Vaio VGN FS315E).

I have been given a live disk of the latest edition of ubuntu (10.4?) by someone at work, but my CD drive on my laptop seems to think the disk is blank. I know this is not the case as when the disk is inserted into a different laptop is it recognised as an ubuntu installation disk.

My aim to boot ubuntu from the disk to get a feel for what it's like before installing it fully on my laptop, and also to check that it would work on said laptop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Maverick Live CD On Sahara Laptop?

Dec 24, 2010

My sister has this old laptop, it's a Sahara NB610-LE1D, that she wants to use as a karaoke/music machine. Being an avid Ubuntu user for about 2 years now, I recommended an Ubuntu installation with Rhythmbox. Fantastic, she said - you install it and show me how to use it.

I downloaded an iso of version 10.10, burned it and tried to boot up the laptop with it (there is a beta version of Windows 7 on it at the moment that's expired, it's really not usable.)

It gets past the boot-up sound, and the new maverick wallpaper loads, and then it just sits there, with the mouse pointer changing between the pointer and the little circle busy ball. I've left it for a few hours yesterday and nothing else happened. I've done a memory test, and a disk test, both of which are fine.I'm about to throw this machine out of the window.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Get HP Laptop To Boot From Live USB - Sort It?

Apr 25, 2011

Fed up with Windows and ready to become a Linux convert. Here's the only problem:

I've created no less than four separate Live USB distros - all using different USB sticks -
yet my HP Pavilion dv7 refuses to recognize any of them as "bootable devices."

1) Have formatted USB sticks in FAT16 & FAT32 - neither made a difference.

2) Have created bootable USB sticks using Ubuntu Minimal Live install; Ubuntu full Live install; PuppyLinux Live install; even a simple gparted live install - none will boot.

3) Have checked & re-checked that BIOS is set to boot first from USB drive device.

4) 2 of the 4 USB sticks are new, fresh out of the packaging; and 3 of the 4 USB sticks are each from different manufacturers - so I'm fairly certain it's not a issue of a particular brand being incompatible, nor is it due to the sticks being corrupted somehow.

5) Each of the 4 live distros appears to have downloaded just fine - all necessary files appear to be in order.

6) Have tried using Unetbootin, Ubuntu's own live usb tool, and 1 or 2 others - all have failed to boot my HP laptop.

7) Have even tried removing all non-essential hardware before booting - even booting with no hard drives installed - system still returns the error "no bootable device detected."

This laptop is only 2 years old; I know it should be able to boot from USB. I can boot from a (rather old) SliTaz distro on CD just fine - but I need a persistent USB stick so I can easily add packages as needed, etc...s.

Fedora Installation :: Install And Live Do Not Even Start

Jul 18, 2009

So lets start with my laptop. I am currently running windows vista 64-bit and I usually experiment with linux on a virtual machine but I decided to try and put it on as a dual boot os. I have x3 320gb hdd (7200rpm) on raid5, x2 1gb nvidia gtx go running sli, 8gb ram, 2.8ghz core2 quad, and random other things that aren't important. Point is that my system should run anything I throw at it.

So I downloaded Fedora 11 from a torrent and burned the iso to a disk. When I run it, it pretends its going to run it, it comes up with a log and loads stuff and all. But then it just hangs.. it doesn't do anything, no live starts, no nothing. Its just a blank screen with a blinking underscore in the top left "_" so I type and my typing shows up and thats it. Any other time I've used Linux I've never had to put in a command or anything to start, so I don't know what the problem is.

Fedora Installation :: Live CD Or DVD For Clean Install?

Oct 21, 2010

For the last two releases I've used pre-upgrade ( F11>F12>F13 ). While F13 is working OK it's showing one or two minor glitches, such as the odd hang and sometimes part of the Gnome taskbar doesn't load. I realise these may be just F13 issues, but in case they're due to accumulated errors in two updates I'm planning to back up and do a clean install of F14 - once the feeding frenzy has died down.

The question, as posed in the title, is whether to D/L the full DVD or install from a live CD and add the apps I need. For instance, I don't need to network with my other computers - data transfer is by ' sneakernet ' with a pen drive - and I'm sure there's quite a bit else I can live without which the standard DVD install will contain, such as chat. Conversely, I'll be installing some extras such as Google Earth using AutoX.So basically, will installing from a live CD be any real benefit or will I just be making work fro myself? I frequently notice updates which don't seem to have much to do with the apps I use regularly, but they may contain essential dependencies.

Why i am interested to know is that previously when i was using a earlier version of fedora11 i guess, people in the forum suggested me to download the driver from the nvidia site and install it. It was really painful to install the driver in that way.

Fedora Installation :: ALL Live Fedora11 CD / DVD Freezing At Install

Jul 31, 2009

This is my Fedora 11 installation review:The pc (cd2, 7600gs, 2gb ram) boots ok from any of the many Fedora live cd/dvd.After booting it goes to a nice window with a (3 colored flashing forward motion) tollbar at the bottom, where the words Generic 11 are written at the bottom right.

So far so good: no questions to answer, the Dvd is speaning out loud. 2 min later the above mentioned screen changes into a b&w verbose mode sreen. After a dozen of written lines, where the last one says "bridge firewalling ..." the drive noise gradually extinguishes, its red light turns off, the b&w verbose screen dies and even the Pc looks like dead too. Could be waiting here until next day, nothing more happens. So, I do various alt/ctrl/del, until the Cd/dvd (liteon) ejects and the pc reboots.

This is really CRAZZY. Lately I'v been trying many different distribution installations and this never happened. It's equal with any of the many fedora live cd/dvd's, window manager's, 32/64 bit. I did try last week, 2weeks before, today.... and did also try fedora Omega but is the same result at the end.I wonder if this is just me, missing some Fedora fundamental specific thing, or if ithis has happened to some of you.I browsed and searched but this looks like an uncommon issue, as I didn't find nothing similar.

Fedora Installation :: Forgot To Install Bootloader - How To Do So From Live CD

Dec 9, 2009

I've installed Fedora to dual-boot with Ubuntu. I'm using /dev/sda1 for Ubuntu, and /dev/sda3 for Fedora. Unfortunately, I unchecked the "Install boot loader" checkbox, so I still have the Ubuntu boot loader but no way to boot Fedora. While still logged into the Fedora Live CD, how can I install the Fedora boot loader to /dev/sda3 and set it up to chainload from Ubuntu's GRUB menu? (I'm thinking it would be 'grub-install /dev/sda3' as root, and then just edit /dev/sda1:/boot/grub/menu.lst, but I'd like confirmation.)

Fedora Installation :: Live KDE CD Install : How To Select Boot From /dev/hda4

Feb 28, 2009

I was able to install Fedora 10 from the Live KDE CD, however I can't boot it.

I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.

There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:

boot from hard disk:

Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?

P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.

Fedora Installation :: Install From Live CD With Nvidia Geforce 7150M?

Mar 17, 2009

Fedora Core 8 did not recognize my Geforce 7150M display adapter (in a HP DV6000 laptop), neither did Fedora Core 10 I tried yesterday although this laptop is now already over one year old (I have used Vista because it works out of the box but it sucks as you might have guessed). That could be something I'd like to complain about but I choose not to, I simply want to know how to install Fedora 10 from a live CD (that is all I have now, no DVDs and not too much cash to buy some..) Live CD boots and I can access command line. If I have understood correctly, Nvidia proprietary driver supports my display adapter but it is not included in live cd so I could use X after installation. Problem is that I don't know how to successfully run the installer from text mode. I tried to execute 'anaconda' but it cannot find packages to install when it comes to that. There seem to be no instructions how to install from a live CD that I could find using Google. For sure someone knows what command to execute to begin installation?
