I am trying to install Fedora 11, but the monitor that I am using is only 640x480. When the window comes up to start the install, I cannot see any of the buttons or tabs for selecting the items. How can I adjust the resolution so that I can see the entire image in my screen?
View 5 RepliesI have just installed Fedora 10 and all went well except that the resolution is set to 1024x768, which is not cool on a 22" HP w2207h LCD monitor. When I bring up Monitor Resolution Setting the Mirror Screens is checked and 1024x768 is the highest resolution. If I uncheck Mirror Screens and select "Laptop" I am able to select 1680x1050, but it now has my desktop in the upper left hand corner of my monitor. Should I be looking for a driver for my i845G graphics processor?
PS: I am new to using Linux please be patient with my ignorance.
I have googled this and I refuse to believe the answer is "older video card" or "ubuntu". Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my screen resolution in Linux. This happens with both openSUSE 11.4 and Fedora 15. The moment my PC restarts after I have installed the operating system it will boot up with a screen resolution higher than my monitor supports. My screen supports a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz and Linux sets the default resolution way too high at boot, now all I get is a message from my screen asking me very nicely to change the signal timings, but I can't because I can't see anything to change it to a lower value (I don't want it so high anyways because then everything is too **** small). My monitor is a SONY GDM-5410 and the Graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 4870 1GB. It nly works when I boot the system to FailSafe mode, but then I can't cahnge it permanently.

Problem is that after the screen comes up to chose the default version or failsafe, my monitor shows no input. If I delete the VGA 0x031 (i think that's the number) on the Options line in the screen where you chose the version, I get my command line interface.
Can I make the blank VGA options permanent?
I have a 22'' monitor. And I would like to set resolution to 1280*800. This is the resolution set in Windows in my computer in another disk partition. So I dont understand why I can't do the same in Fedora 13. The default resolution is 1680*1050, but everything looks too small. Other options I can choose are uselesnes because it distort everything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get any Linux on my Compaq LTE 5200. The problem is that it dose not have a floppy, and will not boot from CD or Network. The distros I'm working with; Damn Small Linux, DSL-Not, Spri, Puppy, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu -mini, U-Lite, Watt, Crunch Bang (Lite), or DeLi.
I have a few other laptops that I can work with the HDD, and USB-HDD dongle. However, whenever I put the HDD back into the LTE 5200, I get all sorts of errors LiLo 99, GRUB 17, 2, 18.
How can I install on system {A}, to work on {B}? Is there a way to dd if=bootdisk.img of=/dev/hda1 so that it will boot? Other ideas? P.S. Not quite a "n00b", but did not know where to place this question.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 x86 with Xfce4 desktop enivorment. I got an old Nvidia 6600 GT. I'm on a 21" IBM CRT, and i know that it's good for 2048x1536 @ 75hz.
I know that it can handle 30-130 khz Horizontal and 40-170 hz Vertical.
I also know that i would like to be able to use 1600x1200 @ 85hz.
Right now I'm just not able to go past 1024x768 @ 50hz. I've installed the restricted nvidia driver from the popup restricted driver menu, also tried to downgrade to an earlier driver, did'nt work, then i upgraded again to the newest driver that was easily available through Envyng-gtk. Still no more resolution choiches.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg just don't work. Nothing happens when i write it in the terminal.

after upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 i received the Unity as a default. with the help of this forum i figured out how to get the Gnome.i would like to try the Unity but when i am switching to Unity i cant get the resolution i need to my external monitor.i have an application, Switch resolution that doesn't work under the Unity but does work under Gnome.i can change the resolution in the external monitor to its native resolution but than i get the upper panel in a good resolution and below only black without any window or anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed FC11 on my laptop T43 and the video card is ATI Mobility Radeon x300. Now I have a problem of screen resolution with external monitor:
When I do presentation, I have to mirror the two monitors and both set to 1024*768, which is not perfect.
I remember that when I use RHEL 5 desktop edition, The system can automatically detect the external monitor and set it by itself ----- The laptop uses 1400*1050 and the external monitors such as projector uses 1024*768. But I haven't found such feature on FC11.
It seems that whenever I boot my laptop (hp probook 6450b) without a monitor attached, then boot with a monitor later attached, the configuration gets all messed up.
Currently, if I boot with the monitor attached, right after the blue loading screen (at the login prompt) i get two black monitors and a mouse, with no login screen. Unplugging the monitor shows the login screen on the laptop.
If i boot without the monitor attached, log in, then plug it in, i see the following from xrandr:

I did notice that when I shutdown, it hangs on "Running guests on default URI", and i get a stack trace. It will keep dumping stack traces, and i have to hold down the power button to force it off.
problem happens after installing nvidia driver.everything was fine.the nvidia driver has been detected and functioning correctly.but my monitor,acer x173w which can go for maximum resolution of 1440x990 but i'm still using 1024x768.

Install went through smoothly in both my laptop and an old Dell Optiplex GX 270.
Screen looks fine on laptop but terrible on the Dell. It's stuck on Refresh rate of 60Hz and flickers pretty bad. 60Hz is the only rate offered! How can I change the refresh rate to ~65-72Hz like is possible on earlier Ubuntu versions to ease eye strain?

However, I've come across an issue and I've done a lot of searching on various forums etc and basically I'm going around in circles. I've had my PC hang already after I tried to create a xorg.conf file. I have since removed the changes I made.
I have a a SIS 771/671 PCIE VIA Display Adapter (rev 10). I got this info via the lspci command. The problem I have is that it's not letting me select a resolution above 1024 * 768. I know it has higher resolutions as when it was a Windows XP and Vista PC I had higher resolutions. There has to be an easier way to set a screen resolution that manually editing cryptic files and knowing refresh rates etc.
I've installed (in fact, reinstalled) Fedora 14 64bit and I just can get the resolution that I need with my legacy monitor. It's a CRT Samsung SyncMaster 753DFX. The video card is an NVidia GeForce 8600 GTS and I've installed the driver with the guide found in this same forum [URL] with the akmod one.
My problem is that the same HW with Windows XP run resolutions (among others) of 1280x800 @ 85Hz and 1280x768 @ 75Hz, but in Fedora the nearest one I get is 1280x900 @ 60Hz and that 60Hz makes me dizzy after a few minutes. So, it's posible to get the same configuration in Fedora as I got in Windows XP? And if it's possible, how can a get it? My xorg.conf have this info:

Today my desktop reverted to 1024x768 resolution immediately after init. I tried changing it back but only 1024x768 and 800x600 are listed as supported in the display settings, even though my monitor supports resolutions of up to 1360x768. Rebooting the system did not solve the problem.I'm running Fedora 15 x86_64 on kernel 2.6.38.8-35 with the proprietary nvidia drivers of version 275.09.07. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 933n. nvidia-settings is apparently not detecting it correctly, it thinks I'm using a CRT monitor.I was actually in this exact same situation a few months back, but it kind of went away on its own, so I didn't mind too much. Not sure if I need drivers or what to do - I feel really stupid as I should be able to get this right but I am at a brick wall. Basically I have a 20inch monitor hooked up to the on-board graphics card and cannot get higher resolution than 900 x 600. It should be at 1280 by 1240. This is a brand new install with the latest Ubuntu 10. Under monitor preferences its says 'unknown' for monitor type and I don't have any driver disk for this screen but never needed one previously.

I have two displays: my main being an Apple Cinema Display (1920x1200), and my secondary being a Compaq W17q (1440x900). Previously all applications saw the secondary fine, being able to detect its name, native resolution, refresh rate, and so forth. But today, for no reason, after going into nvidia-settings the display is now being called "CRT-0" with only 4:3 resolutions available (1024x768 being the highest).
So now I'm stuck with the wrong resolution on my second monitor. All I can guess is that something more integral in Fedora is no longer able to read the EDID in it or something (I say integral as it's not just nvidia-settings, its everything, not to mention my install of Win 7 still reads the display A-OK)? Maybe I could just force the 1440x900 resolution? If so, how? Everything I've tried so far has either had no effect or resulted in glitch city.

I installed Fedora 12 configured Gnome automatically. Generally default settings. My monitor was connected directly to the video card and all was good. My video card was detected and my monitor was detected as ViewSonic Corporation 19" and I can set the screen resolution to 1280x1024. I had no xorg.conf file, as it seems that Fedora 12 does a great job of PnP to just set everything up.Now I go and complicate things by hooking up my monitor through a KVM switch. All of a sudden my monitor is "Unknown" and the best resolution I can achieve is 800x600.
Sure, I could go and reconnect without the KVM, but I want to be able use it.Is it possible to edit xorg.conf to tell it "Trust me, just use 1280x1024 at 60Hz even though you can't figure out what the monitor is"?
I tried a number of the posted suggestions to generate xorg.conf files but none of them get me what I need. A simple sample file listing that does the minimum is greatly appreciated (I can experiment from there once I get a basic setup working).And can someone explain if it is X or the ATI driver that is getting confused by the unknown monitor type. It helps to know what is actually going on in addition to a fix (so I can figure it out myself in the future). Thanks!
I installed fedora 15 and i m not able to change the monitor resolution. if I open the display settings I just get the choice between 1024x768 and 800x600.

So here it is: I recently downloaded the Fedora 11 x86_64 full install DVD iso and burned it to a DVD. It booted up fine and went to the "splash screen" (where you select options) with no problems. I first selected "upgrade or install." There was some text on the screen before the screen lost output ("no signal" displayed on my monitor.) I let it sit like this for about ten minutes hoping it would work to no avail. Next I selected "upgrade or install with default video driver" this time I got to the "check media" screen, checked with no problems, said continue, it said it was loading anaconda...then...boom, same problem

I cannot install Fedora core 10. It boots up and it gets to the Fedora 10 loading screen. After that it complains my monitor is out of Range and that's as far as I can go. I had originally thought I could get to some text install mode, but I don't make it far enough to do that.

I have an F11 on an old box 686 athlon with an old nVidia Corporation NV5 [RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro] (rev 15) AGP. I am trying to do a network install upgrade to F13. I cannot get it to display the install menus from the network install disk. I get the initial screen with the install, basic video, repair, etc choices, but after I select the install/upgrade option, I see the CD drive read but the LCD monitor display never appears. The ready light on the monitor just keeps blinking and the display stays dark. Is there anyway of getting an error log to see what is going on?

First off, let me say: I'm a long time Linux hobbyist and recently installed Fedora 12. I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.
So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.
