I need to install restricted codecs (MP3, WMA, etc) in Fedora but I wanna download them at home. Is there a way I can download them in Ubuntu, put them on my USB Hard drive and install them from there?

i had fedora 10 previously installed, i installed the RPM repositories and the VLC player and things worked fine.
When I try playing a movie using mplayer, it says The following plugins are required
MPEG -1 Layer 3 decoder
Divx mpeg-4 version 5 decoder
or
could not determine the type of stream
In the first case, clicking on the search option, error occurs (probably because of the proxy I am working behind) I can use yum install though behing the proxy. How can install these codecs from the command line ?
I am new to Ubuntu and need help. I have been using windows but now I want a change this is why I have also installed ubuntu 9.10 in my pc using wubi with win7. I like it a lot.
For now, I do not have internet connection and when I go to the software center it requires an internet connection for software installation.

On the next screen I choose my install drive... then it asks me (dont remember verbatim) by how much do I want to shrink the current partition? I put 200 (I assume its GB... is it MB?) and then it said shrink failed and then takes me back. Is that question on how much I want to shrink have to do with how much space I'm putting on the new F14 partition or how much I'm leaving on the windows partition?

My professor said that we need to install any Linux operating systems so I chose Fedora, but he said we need at least 16GB free of space to install it in our computer, sadly i only have 1GB space left remaining. View 2 Replies View RelatedI was happily running F10 and against my better judgement when it offered to upgrade me to F11 I decided to give it a try. The F11 install hung at 893 of 1626 packages installed. Some SE Linux package was in process of install. On the next boot the installer fails to upgrade for a corrupted root. It says I can backtrack and do a full install, but crashes with a bug when I choose backtrack.
So here is my question - Can i edit the command line and tell the installer to full install rather than upgrade? Or am I stuck with downloading a DVD ISO and doing a full install that way. I've done F8, F9 and F10 so full install from DVD doesn't bother me.
I have 6GB of RAM and I'm planning to install Fedora 14 32-bit to achieve a higher degree of compatibility. Does fedora automatically download and install a PAE enabled kernel when it detects more than 4GB of RAM (Just like Ubuntu)?

The uderscore is flashing and i can type stuff in but have no idea what to type in to find the kernel image, or why it cant find the kernel image.

Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an mkv file that I'm trying to player with mplayer, but no video is showing up. Mplayer was installed using apt-get install mplayer since ./configure when I try to build mplayer gives me a bunch of garbage:

But, after installing mplayer using apt-get, I can't get any video for the file I'm trying to play. I've tried copying the files from "all-20110131.tar.bz2" to /usr/local/lib/codecs but I still don't even get a box for video. Everything works fine using the built in movie player--even the subtitles are shown correctly.

I was playing around on my ibook g4 and thought I would try out Midori. I was pleasantly surprised to see it would allow an html5 applet to open on ...... Sadly, the video never begins playing, so I believe I must need to install the non-free codecs package...if it does indeed contain h.264.
I've used Ubuntu off and on over the years, so my knowledge of how to do a lot things is quite limited. I've been searching online for hours and can not find the information I need to install the non-free codecs...or just h.264 in general. I saw one post about adding medibuntu repositories, but the address relating to nonfree codecs for the ppc gives a 404 when it is going through the apt-get update in the terminal.
