My fonts render well everywhere, using Dejavu fonts, but in Firefox and Epiphany they have these terrible yellow outlines and jagged edges.Has anyone else seen this? I've only noticed it recently (since the upgrade to Fedora 13), but it also happens on a Fedora 12 machine at home.

Sometime in firefox some of the characters seems not fully rendered, and as I recall it can also happen in menu fonts sometimes. In the attached screen-shot you can see that it's the a character that has the problem - but only for one font type or? But I have seen this with most characters I think - and as stated this happens randomly.For instance right now I looked again in the tab in firefox where I just 5 minutes ago did the screen-shot and now all characters are correct?? I have tried to reload or even restart firefox when it occurs, but this is now guaranty for a solution... When it happens it makes many homepages unreadable
View 9 Replies View Relatedable to find anything on this particular issue. The problem I'm having is that the contrast ratio of text in firefox seems very inconsistent. For example: if I'm reading an article on NYtimes, from one paragraph to the next it looks like some sentences are in bold-face and others are not. If I refresh the page, it'll be different areas that are or aren't bf. Sometimes they even change (getting darker or lighter) as I'm sitting there reading. I tried to take a screenshot but unfortunately the text all becomes uniform as soon as I hit prt-scr so the image doesn't show the effect.
Another example is viewing my personal favorite forum where threads that I haven't read are in bf as opposed to those I have read which are normal. The problem is that when I do a mouse-over of the bf threads the font rendering becomes more greyed out. It's still bold-face, just not as dark.
A final example is in text-entry boxes. As I'm typing this right now the line I'm on looks normal but the paragraph above seems to go from regular to bold-face from one line to the next. The paragraph above that looks entirely bold-face...
It did occur to me that this could be a monitor issue or even a vid-card issue. But it's definitely not monitor because I can scroll the whole screen and the variation moves with the text... And it's not vid-card because I installed Chrome as a check and it doesn't have the same problem. None of the above symptoms carry over to that application.

Then after installing it, I realized not only did firefoxes fonts look terrible, the fonts on the entire system were totally different, they look terrible.
So I uninstalled all the new programs, removed the new moz repository, and then reinstalled the regular firefox 3.5 from regular ubuntu repos. Dropped all support software down to 3.5 as well. System fonts are still totally fubar!
I tried creating a .fontconfig file with the text from the threads, supposedly to fix the new firefoxes fonts, and it did not help.
As my fonts looked absolutely wonderful, now they look terrible. I tried messing with all the settings in the appearance tab of the gnome menu, nothing seems to help!
Regular firefox is back, and running fine, but its fonts and all the rest of the fonts on the system look horrible, like they are not getting aliased/hinted at all!
I downloaded an FLV video and placed an extra MP3 file over it. Two files. Total: 30 MBI experimented with about seven rendering containers, and QuickTime renderer was the only rendering container that didn't result in sped-up/compressed video or correct rendering for just fifteen seconds.How in the name of all that is holy did this rendering end up with 570 extra MB?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded Frets On Fire and the HRP Polymer pack for Duke3D...Duke3D runs fine with just EDuke32 and no mods, just Duke3D and EDuke32. But when I try the HRP Polymer pack, it says in Terminal "NVIDIA: Direct Rendering failed, attempting indirect rendering." This is fine...if I want the game to lag like hell, I'm sure my video card and the driver for it support DR, the video card is a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5200, the same message appears in terminal when I run Frets On Fire, I think it does with other games too, if someone could explain how to enable Direct Rendering.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am impressed with the visuals of both Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6, but unfortunately I've been experiencing a very annoying issue since my install of 10.04 two days ago.
When I begin a Firefox session (using profile manager, in case it might have any relevance to the issue) it moves at lightning speed for the first five or so pages. Then, if I try a website it will time out (I have tried various pages, so it is not a page-specific issue) forcing me to refresh the page, wait roughly ten seconds, and finally be back on the initial page.
I am too lazy to re-list my PC stats, but they can be found in my signature. I am running on a household network, with the average connection speed ranging from from 40-80%.
The only other Ubuntu release I have used is Jaunty, where Firefox 3.0 (was it really 3.0 back then?) worked perfectly.
I have installed Google Chrome as well, and it seems to have the same relative issue, but it manages to recover from the timeouts quickly.
My only thought is perhaps it is an internal Internet setting that is disturbing the browser(s), potentially a default setting that has been modified since 9.04?

I just preupgraded from Fedora 14 to 15 on my Toshiba NB205 netbook (the preupgrade went smoothly by the way).
Immediately upon logging in, I discovered catastrophically poor quality of font rendering in every terminal window program I tried, (and I checked plenty like LilyTerm, Sakura, gnome-terminal, etc) and in web-browsers.
The symptoms are the same for all applications: the glyphs are very thin, anorectic, and very ugly.
The described behavior is desktop independent: same in Gnome (3 and the fallback mode), fluxbox, Openbox.
I've recently bought a Toshiba Satellite U500-10V and I've managed to get F12 work on it pretty well. However, I still have some minor issues. One of them is related to PDF document rendering.Basically, every picture in a PDF document is distorted or grainy(I don't know if this is correct English ^^"). I played around with the Fedora RPMs and managed to patch freetype-freeworld, cairo, fontconfig and Xfto achieve subpixel hinting on par with Ubuntu I wanted to share them with the Fedora community, if interested. View 14 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

There is one little thing annoying me in man pages. When I search for text using '/' command the line where the text is found is positioned at the top of the screen. I am a pretty experienced linux (or for you hardcore GNU fans GNU/Linux) user having used it for almost 4 years and I just built my Arch system but have found that alot of the functionality that I've come to love about ubuntu isn't in the default Gnome package but that Ubuntu's Gnome is heavily modified so I want to switch back but do to my lack of modern hardware I can't run Ubuntu as smoothly as I want.

But I was wondering are there some Highly intensive processes that don't really need to be running? The only thing I would be using Ubuntu for is Web Browsing, Coding, Gimp, Text Processing and probably Music; thats really all I need I don't do much else besides that.

I am running a ubuntu desktop machine as a server and use VNC from my windows machine to login via a LAN to the ubuntu machine. The login session is very sluggish and frustrating. I installed gnome-rdp to see if it would be better but I don't know how it works or what to do and if there is something else I can do to improve the performance. I found the fonts sometimes a little thin. I've heard of compiling freetype with bytecode interpreter enabled. Is this necessary on Squeeze? If this would make an improvement what would I need to do?

Everything is fine but status map options are very few and you cannot customize them. all the views are very wierd.

I have got a Radeon X800XL built in my computer. I was able to play Quake 4 in high details once, so I guess my PC is quite fast. Anyway, I have trouble playing Anno 1503 and SuperTuxKart (sic!). While Anno 1503 is fairly unplayable, SuperTuxKart has got around 30 to 90 fps, depending on the situation. In my opinion, that's way to less.
My question is: How could I improve the 3d performance, to be able to play such legacy games as Anno 1503? Therefor I'll give you some information about my configuration and what I tried so far.
I run Ubuntu 10.04. That means, the driver provided by AMD/ATI (fglrx) does not work anymore. My Ubuntu is up to date.
I set the kind of graphics card and the graphics ram in the Registry of Wine. Disabling the compiz-fusion-effects does not improve the situation however.
I disabled KMS. That gave an amazing performance boost, but still not enough. I am still experiencing performance troubles like being unable to play Anno 1503, and some others.
I also created a Xorg.conf, trying to tweak some settings, but that does not improve the performance much. The config file is attached below.
How to improve or accelerate the 3d-performance. Maybe there is an beta-driver or some xorg-settings I did not find?
