Fedora :: Can Someone Help Reducing Size Of Lvm Partition?

I have installed Fedora 15 on my laptop a couple of days ago, but now i want to install windows next to it.To do this i have to resize the lvm partition.But at the final step (vgreduce) i get this message:Physical volume "/dev/sda2" still in use.What now? Can someone help me reducing the size of my lvm partition?
I have an install of Fedora 12 and I would like to know how to reduce the size of the /var/log/messages file.You see that file is already 120MB large and about 4 days old.I would like to be able to either make a new file daily or adjust a maximum size
Ok chaps, what do I need similar to Irfan View on T'other OS (hiss) to edit the Size of Photo's, friends tend to get miffed if I email 5MB Pic's. Loads of viewers etc on Ubuntu, like Playing Hopscotch in a Minefield, can give you a really Crap Day!
Alternate Heading: Unable to use opensuse partitioner to fully format a Seagate 1Tb drive OK. Swapped over a motherboard to increase the number of slots available for hard drives so that I could expand my raid array (4 X 1Tb drives). Discovered I had no thermal paste so all delayed for 24 hours while I bought some, miscalculated on rebuild and had to reinstall OpenSuse but in the end system is now up and running. Unfortunately when I formatted my new 1Tb drive (Seagate) it formats to 931.50 Gb while the other 4 drives formatted to 931.51 Gb (they are WD). I'm now in the position that when I try to add this new drive I get :
mdadm: /dev/sdc1 not large enough to join array
Is there any way I can resize the existing devices down to 931.50 Gb so that I can add in the new drive without having to restore the array?
I've spent hours trying to scan + shrink a multipage PDF documentlosing readability. This is the first time I've ever needed to do this! (I had to scan each page as ".jpg" in order to email and open on another computer, so I could not scan to PDF directly, which I think is why each page was so large; lower DPIs made the text too blurry.)I found this great tip on UbuntuGeek...but anyone can do this if GhostScript is installed:
There is one directory in /oracle partition in test server which i use to delete that dir after copying in the same location with diff file/dir name. Like this i did so many times.evrytime i m deleting but the /oracle partition space is reducing by 1.5 or 2gb after deleting dirs of 80gb.Directory size is 80GB and partition size 400GB.plz let me knw with steps, is it requires to do De-fragmentation?
I run Fedora FC13-x64. Recently I added a few TB's of RAID5 storage tto my server and moved most data from the root filesystem to that. Now my root volume is way too big. My basic install resulted in a 1TB LVM volume group entirely dedicated to a single lv_root.
Now I want to make room and eventually clone this disk to a much smaller root disk. I see many threads about reducing the size of an LVM logical volume. My first steps were succesful. I used lvreduce and resize2fs to reduce the size of the logical volume and filesystem. I also user pvreduce to reduce the size of the physical volume group.
But still gparted and fdisk report the physicalk volume (/dev/sde2) as 900GB. The embedded LVM stuff is as small as 60GB. Anyway LVM manager and GParted doe not allow me to shrink /dev/sdf2 to snuggly fit the LVM stuff in it.
a client brought in an 160GB external HDD and wanted to get the files off it, there appeared to be no partitions on the disk but i thought it may have been formatted to use the whole disk. I tried to mount it as the various FS types the client thought it may have been to no avail.
I ran testdisk on it which told me that it previously had a mac partition table and a 210GB partition on it (which is larger than the disk) could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not this is even possible, and if so how could i retrieve the data?
When partitioning disk devices for F14 on my new x86-64 box, I allocated 100G for / mounted on /dev/sda1. It's now 100% full. I have 365G free space available on the disk. Can I somehow extend /dev/sda1 to use some of this free space?
I have F8 system that I have installed a fair amount of software on. When I started to install F10 I discovered that the file system is LVM (F8 default) which takes the entire disk (80G). I want to keep the F8 install but add F10 so I can migrate things to F10. So I need to:
1. Back up the system to USB HD so I can restore if things go wrong. Prefer to backup to a non-LVM partition (if that's reasonable). I don't really have any critical data but want to preserve the software installs and configurations that I have spent a lot of time sorting out. 2. Reduce the LVM partition to 20 G to make room for F10 and leave some unallocated space - say 30G for F10 and 30G unalocated. 3. Install F10 (on non-LVM partition) and keep both bootable. I have heard this may involve editing some grub files.
I have used SystemRescueCD a little and want to be able to use it on the F10 partition.
Is it possible to increase the size of a partition that is using LVM?I have 5GB of unpartitioned and unallocated space on my disk. I wish to add this to my VG. This free space is physically before the LVM partition.Can I increase the size of the physical partition using pvresize? Or is the only way to to create a new 5GB partition, add it to the VG and allocate it to the LVs? This is not ideal as I wish to minimise the number of partitions I have on the one disk.
I have a 10GB IDE disk that Parted says has a single 10GB partition (/dev/sdb1) which is mounted at /home. However, df and the Gnome file managers see it only as a 3GB partition. It was a 3GB partition when I was using Fedora 9 but the partition was resized to 10GB during the installation of Fedora 11.Can anyone suggest how to make df and Gnome see it as a 10GB partition?
I am running Fedora 15 along with Windows 7 on my Dell laptop. Yesterday, when I was trying to install TeX Live, it stopped in between saying that there is no space left in File System. Even though I have space in my hard drive volumes, space seems to be running out of my system partition which is only 9GB in size (I guess!).I am posting a few results that might help you guys. I have an unformatted 15GB partition. How can I add it to my system partition? And is my var folder too big (1.5GB)? If yes, how do I backup its contents and then delete them? Additionally, the File System shows a folder 'media' (89GB) which links the C: drive that contains Windows 7 and my personal files. Should it remain that way or should I separate it? If the latter, how? I just couldn't find any.

I am setting up a server and trying to access its partition over the nfs on a client machine. Our server has 4 1.5TB disks and the idea was to make a RAID 5 out of it.Now here is the problem:When I used only 1 disk that is nfs partition was of 1.5TB, I got fine speed(30MBps), but with multiple disks whether I am making 3TB (Raid 10) or 4.5TB (Raid 5), I get a really poor speed of 5-6MBps. I/O just waits.But for all above cases, disk I/O locally works fine.Does anyone knows any NFS limitation that is causing this problem?
When I installed fedora I told the installation routine to use the free hard disk space. I had 98gb of free space. After the installation I look under the MyComputer icon checked the free space which is 45gb. Well I have a hard time believing that I have used half of 98gb already. There must be something going on here.Also.. With regards to the boot manager. It made Fedora the default OS. While I don't really have a problem with that is there a way to change it so that my other OS is the default? I use two operating systems and sometimes one week I'm using one primarily and then things will change.
fedora 12.i have one partition which is mounted on a rootfiles folder having space of 700gb which is located on a /directory.but when im adding data on rootfiles my /root directory space is also getting increased.so could any one telme how to increase the size of root partition.i want to resize my rootfiles folder to 600db and want to add 100gb to my / directory.how can i do this plz helpme this is important 4 me.first i will free 100gb then i will add 100gb to root directory.but i dont want to loose any data on rootfiles folder.
I use Fedora 12 AMD64 and I partition my HDD with Default partitioning what happen when temp partition is full by files ?Can this happen ? for example my temp partition full by files and my system can not use temp partition .!can I say my Fedora clear temp after each reboot .?
I've just installed Fedora 14 over an old Ubuntu (heron, I think). The old install used a single partition for both / and /home; and I wanted to try to avoid reinstalling /home if possible (but yes, I did back it up). I chose the anaconda option to shrink the old Ubuntu /, and created a new LVM for the Fedora /. This seemed to work perfectly. I mounted the old / on '/host' (an old naming habit), and then mounted individual home dirs into /home using autofs. All seemed fine. However, on my first reboot after the autofs mounts fsck failed. The current situation is as follows:

Resize2fs tells me to run fsck, and complains of a short read if I try to force. Fsck seems to run fine if I say 'no' to the abort prompt, but doesn't change the problem. Filesystem is ext3. Started with debugfs. First used icheck and ncheck to work out which file(s) had been written to the non-existent blocks past the partition size. Fortunately, there was only one. Deleted that file (can restore it from backup later). Quit debugfs. Now resize2fs -p -f worked perfectly. fsck after resizing was clean. Reboot seems happy. As for the origin of the problem, I would guess there's a rounding bug in the code anaconda uses to shrink partitions.
I am using Fedora core 10. I have changed my partition size of Linux from windows. After I finished resizing the partition, I rebooted my system to the Linux platform. While booting it gave me an error: repair filesytem #1: I don't know what to do?
I want to add Fedora 14 to my triplecore 3GB RAM computer which has windows, Fedora 12 & ubuntu installed. What are the recommendation (e.g. size) for harddisk partition allocation? I can reuse the swap partition, can't I? Should I install Fedora 14 to a single partition (ie. /)? Should I use only ext4?
I have a home directory which is mounted on the LVM partition,How can i reduce the size of LVM partiotion without loosing the data on home directory...whenever i use lvreduce command it show me a warning mesg that the whole data will be lost...reducing the size of LVM partition without loosing my home directory data.
I've got a server that needs more space. To achieve this we added space (by extending the VMware disk attached to it).Normally this isn't an issue, because we just add an new partition and LVM it from there, but this host predates our deployment of LVM everywhere.
Our current theory is that the unallocated sectors can not be assigned because they aren't part of the extended partition, and thus ... we go in a circle.So what i believe the way forward is to extend sda4 so that i can then create an sda10 inside of it. Anyone have any ideas on how to do this? I was thinking gparted may do the trick ... but being a server i'm in runlevel3, with no X...
I am relatively new to Linux and Opensuse. I created the / root partition and now it is growing and maxing out. I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?
I just looked at the "posting permissions" and unfortunately I'm unable to insert the screen copy of the kde manager's representation of the goal I want to hit.I got a dual boot system with 4 hard disks and grub installed on /dev/sdd1. Windows xp sp2 (only used for professional audio tools, don't whip me ^^) is installed on /dev/sdc1. The disk sdc is partitioned with the following settings:

When I partitioned the disk I was believing 4 Go were sufficient for windows xp but after years I realized that many applications were using the C: by default (no way to change it thru regedit or another workaround, hard-coding probably) installing stuffs and under windows this is impossible to use such blessed things like the unix's symbolic links !So right now I'm a little tight with the remaining space to work with windows xp. (Of course the swap file has been moved to another partition since the first day I installed xp...)
I have is to use the 7Go of unused space on this disk to size up the /dev/sdc1 partition. When using kde partition manager I noticed that there is no way to use the unused disk space to size up /dev/sdc1 directly.Do you think if I create a partition with the 7 Go of unused space that there is a way to size up /dev/sdc1 without messing up the bootloader ? I don't think GRUB matters about the new partition, it should get the /dev/sdc7 entry. For the backup there is no problem this partition is completely backed up every two weeks (as an image) so the datas may not be lost as a real catastrophic... but if there is danger for the other partitions... that's will be more annoying... but solvable ^^
Once partitioned I believe that there will be a way to "merge" the /dev/sdc1 and /dev/sdc7 partitions and then I would enjoy a new xp partition with 7Gb of free space (it would change from my actual 300Mb !!).Technically it would be possible this is just a question of chaining the different blocks each others and refer to the new space added.The last block in /dev/sdc1 would point to the first block that starts /dev/sdc7 and "that's all"... and /dev/sdc7 would disappear as a partition.
i have got an old computer with some partition and one have linux slackware installed; it is all included there (root and a swap file); its size is almost 4 gb. Now i have a new laptop and i do not really want to reinstall linux on it; simply i want to transfer all things from old on new computer. The size of new hd is almost 12 Gb and i want to use entire with linux slackware. I will recompile new kernel on old computer for the new. Now, i think to use dd to make one image, this follow command may be good, i think:"dd if=/dev/hda3 of=./linux_slackaware.img bs=4096 conv=noerror"I use zipslack on msdos partition (hda2) to run this command; it will make a 4 gb file image partition;Now i ask you:it is possible to transfer and to adapt this image partition on a different size image partition?The new is 12 gb size.what are the right dd command parametres?
