Fedora :: 12 Install Barfs At Same (early) Point?

Apr 7, 2010

I'm obviously very stupid, but fedora is polite about it, suggesting it might be a bug. My laptop has 4Gig of am, twin turion. Of dev/sda1 - sda10 I give itsda5 = /boot (40/80M used)sda6 = / (Old fedora install 5G of 19G used)sda7 = /home (9G of 23G used)which is the previous arrangement on fedora 9. Next screen is about a boot loader, and it offers me sda1 or sda6. I tell it go go and play in the traffic and uncheck the box 'install boot loader' I hit 'next' and it crashes, muttering about some python assertation. It offers to save the error, and I say yes, but doesn't - it just saves some other crap.Any ideas, Fedora experts? I'm afraid I'm rusty on fedora, having defected to slackware & slamd64. But I am trying to get back.

Ubuntu :: Early Failure To Install From CD

Apr 5, 2011

I downloaded ubuntu for desktop and created an usb-stick. I am using an old hp eVectra PC as an "guinea-pig". I configured its bios to use usb as first boot device. It did not boot from there, but went straight on to the debian on the HD.Ok, let's go for a CD. I burnt the image and tried again.Meanwhile, I used this CD on an other PC - but not for an installation, but only for a trial run.

OpenSUSE Install :: Clock Messed Up 2 Hours Early Or Forward - Idk

Jun 14, 2010

i probably messed up the clock somehow... I think during install. Linux keeps messing up windows clock... And vice versa... When the clock in windows is correct (say, 2 PM), the clock in Linux when i reboot says 4 PM... And when i set up the clock in Linux to the correct time (in this case 2 PM) and boot into windows, windows clock says 12 PM...

Of course, when i correct it in windows, linux clock gets messed up again... 2 hours early or forward, idk... I'm not sure what i did to make this happen... Maybe has something to do with hardware clock... I don't wanna constantly correct time whenever i change systems...

Ubuntu / Apple :: How Does Perform On Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro

Apr 16, 2011

I'm very much interested in running Ubuntu (64bit) on the new 15" macbook pro (8,2), but I would like to get a bit more info about it. So if you own a 15" macbook pro.

Following questions:
1) Can you switch of the AMD Radeon GPU to save power?
2) Does the Thunderbolt port allow you to use an external monitor?
3) What is the battery life under Ubuntu? (describe your usage)

Some more 'advanced' questions:
4) Is the quadcore benificial for running full disk encryption (due to the extended AES in Intel's 2.2 i7 cpu)?
5) What kind of IO throughput do you get with and without full disk encryption (please describe if you use SSD or HD incl RPM)
6) Can you tell me the exact type of Broadcom wireless chip used for wifi?

OpenSUSE Install :: Convert Factory Install Into Point Release Install Later

If I install the factory release now, can I easily convert my system to a normal 11.3 point release later, after 11.3 is out? If so, how would I do it? (11.2 has an issue that affects me. It's fixed in 11.3 already, so I have to use 11.3 if I'm going to use openSUSE.)

Networking :: Policy Routing Using Two Point-to-point Links?

Aug 27, 2009

This one has been driving me nuts for some days now:My Gentoo box which is acting as an internet gateway has two point-to-point interfaces, ppp0 (PPPoE to my ISP) and ppp1 (PPTP VPN link to IPREDator). Packets from my local network are just routed through ppp0 and now the fun part starts: I want to MARK (netfilter...) all packets originating from one specific user on that box in order to use another routing table that will contain a default route via the ppp1 interface.Marking seems to work fine as does the second routing table. But quite mysteriously (at least for me), the packets sent out on ppp1 contain the wrong source IP address, namely the address associated with ppp0.So here is what ifconfig and friends tell me:Network interfaces:

Code:
# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0 Protokoll:Punkt-zu-Punkt Verbindung

Ubuntu Networking :: Point To Point (ad-hoc) SSH Over USB Or Ethernet?

Jun 3, 2010

I was wondering if there is any way to SSH from one computer to another and completely bypass a router or any other network infrastructure. The reason I ask is because my robot ( same one in this post ) often needs to change which wireless network it automatically connects to, however it is getting annoying to have to drag out a monitor and plug it in along with a keyboard and mouse every time this needs to happen. Instead I'd much rather just plug my laptop into the other computer, SSH in and change the network myself.

So I thought I would ask you kind people if this is possible. The robot's computer has unused ethernet and USB ports, and I'd like to use those if at all possible (and with linux, anything is possible! -- sorta). I thought about doing something with ad-hoc, but this would limit my range (in infrastructure mode I can control the thing anywhere there is internet), and is to be avoided.

OpenSUSE :: Used "qucs" On An Early Suse 11.x System?

A while ago I used "qucs" on an early Suse 11.x system. It worked fine. Now I ran into a problem that could nicely be solved with a qucs simulation. So I wanted to install it.However I did not find a package for 11.4/32bit nor did I find any traces of one being under construction. So I tried to compile Rev 0.16 but without success. After installation of a lot of missing Qt stuff which the compiler to proceed a bit further, the run ended in a dead end road - at least for me.So here are my questions:Is there a killing situation that makes 11.4 and qucs incompatible?Has anybody here successfully installed qucs on 11.4/32bit?Is there a package under construction and expected to be working soon?

I got this script that backs up a server and then keeps only the last 10 backups and removes the rest.Problem is, the part where it deletes any backups older than the last 10, it never reaches that. I'm guessing it is because the ftp session somehow exits the script entirely, especially if there is a problem with the ftp session. But just to make sure, I'm wondering if you all can look at the code to see if I am making it exit accidentally. Here's the code. I left out data like ip address and directory/file names for my security purposes.

OpenSUSE Install :: What's The Point Of Installing Obsolete Packages

Jul 2, 2011

I made a network install of a new 11.4 system yesterday. It went all fine, but I was suprised that at the end of the installation some 80 packages required updating.

So what's the point in installing obsolete versions first? A significant amount of time is wasted downloading and installing packages, which will be replaced shortly thereafter. Of course that's the way it works for a media-based installation, because one does not want to create, test and release new installation media everytime a package is updated. But in network installation all it would take is to use the repository with the updated version.

The only argument I could imagine is that an updated package could make the installation fail. Installation with original packages has gonew through some QA. Well yes, of course it's all software, so everything can fail. But when you install updates into your production system there is always the theoretical risk that they contain a fatal bug causing damage. For a new installation the damage would be much smaller, should the installation fail because an untested combination of package version happens not to install cleanly.

Fedora :: Using Fedora As Wireless Access Point?

Jun 10, 2009

I have a Pentium 3 system running Fedora 10 (but will be upgraded to 11 this weekend) acting as the router for my 10.x.x.x network to my DSL modem using iptables for a couple of windows computers in my house. the network is all copper ethernet, but my girlfriend's notebook has wireless on it. I put a Linksys wireless PCI card into the fedora server, and it works with b43-fwcutter-011 and lsmod shows b43 loaded. iwconfig lists wlan0. anyway, what I need to know is if anyone has any instructions on how to make the server also be a wireless access point w/ WPA2 encryption for my girlfriend's notebook so that she doesn't have to use her ethernet cable anymore. I've done some google searching and haven't came across anything that was of much help.I ran system-config-network but it didn't seem to have a section on setting up wlan0 to be an access point.

Fedora :: Mounting Point Of A DVD Image File In A VM?

Dec 8, 2009

I installed Fedora 12 in a virtual environment using VMware workstation, I am learning a Linux book. 1. The book ask me to change my directory to Fedora 12 DVD's RPM file directory under terminal. It assumes the mounting point for the disk image would be e.g. '/media/dvd/packages/', but if I type in 'cd /media/dvd/packages/' it obviously won't find the directory. So how do I navigate to the directory using CD command, but I guess put it more accurately I will need to find out what is the mounting point of the Fedora 12 DVD image in my VM.

2. I have another question with my root password, I cannot login as root when the VM first boot up, at the login screen where you are asked about your account name and password screen, So I have to use my normal user account (made up by my first name and last name) when I installed Fedora. But I know exactly what my root password is. The weird thing is I can still access to the root account in the desktops windows environment no problem. e.g. if I go to the top bar 'system-administration-authentication' program, it will let me in after I typed in my root password. In other words, I have access to all the admin tools in the desktop environment.

Fedora :: Mount Point Disappears After Reboot?

I have created a mount point (/media/a500) for my Iconia Tablet and added the following to get it to mount automatically.

First download and install mtpfs......Then do this

Code:
sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0502", MODE="0666"
sudo mkdir /media/a500
sudo chown user:user /media/a500

This works just fine for Fedora 14 but on Fedora 15 the mount point disappears on reboot ie there is no /media/a500 folder. a500 appears under devices in Nautilus and mtpfs is ok as I can mount the device via the command line by creating the mount point setting ownership and running
