Debian :: How To Set Up Telnet
Jan 16, 2011
Is there some reason why every forum I have gone to concerning how to set up telnet, no one will answer the question presented but rather will go on and on about SSH? If I wanted to set up SSH, I wouldn't be searching for info about telnet!

I just setup a server using Ubuntu 10.04LTS Desktop edition. I am a novice in these things. I was able to setup the SSH server and it works from outside my LAN quite well. I can telnet to it also with 22. I have then setup an email server. I can do telnet to it from the server itself but from the internet it just times out. I did netstat -nlp and it shows that it is listening to port 25. I have port forwarding for 25 enabled on the router. I cleaned up all the rules of iptables and iptables -L shows everything is accepted. What else should I check or do?

I have a fedora13 server running and for some reason cannot telnet using the hosts ip address. I have disabled the iptables firewall as well as selinux. I have a soap server app that needs to telnet to the fedora13 server. Strange thing is, I can telnet to localhost, just not to hostname or host ip address

I have a machine running Karmic and dovecot/postfix as a mail server.Everything is working fine with the mail system, except one thing. After sitting for a while I am unable to get to the server via telnet/pop3/smtp. Immediately after I ssh into the server to check it, these services start working.

I have some APC UPS devices that I'm trying to log in to. They are currently configured to use telnet -- as a safety precaution, they can only be accessed from our 'bounce' machine. So because I want to do this from a script, I'm doing it like this ssh decoherence@bouncemachine telnet stupidAPCdevice
This works fine on all the other devices I'm trying this on (Cisco gear, mostly) but the APC won't take any input. I get the login prompt but when I type in my username, ssh echoes it but the APC doesn't appear to ever receive it. It just hangs there at the username prompt. I'm guessing that its telnet implementation is a bit weird (seriously, all the management stuff on APC gear really sucks but anyway
Anyway, I'm just wondering if there are any simple flags I can pass to telnet to make it cooperate. The man page talks about a 'mode' command that lets you fiddle with LINEMODE which sounds like it might be promising but I don't know how to set that in the command line as opposed to interactively.

I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on a wireless networked host machine. The wireless NIC is usb based. Its running inetd for network based servers (telnet, ftp etc). For some reason telnet, ssh or any application specific connection, hangs for a few seconds and then comes back. This happens after every few minutes. I do not loose any sessions or any data flowing across but it is sort of very annoying. It is a dual boot machine and I have also got Windows XP 64-bit. When am running on windows this does not happen, hence am not sure if it is something to do with the wirless nic or something else

i have taken a basic networking class that involved both XP and fedora. I was recommended to use ubuntu though because it's easier to use anyways i have a world of warcraft folder on a windows vista running computer and was wondering how i could use either telnet or FTP to get that ~20GB folder over to my linux desktop.I installed 10.04 and have installed WINE (which i'm still trying to figure out how to work).

When connecting to my Ubuntu box from my Windows 7 machine via Telnet, the session will sometimes freeze for a few seconds before allowing me to continue typing. This seems to happen every few minutes. Both machines are wireless and I am connecting through my local network.

My hardware is the FriendlyArm mini2440 Samsung board. I run our main application from init.d/rcS. It uses printf's to display continuous program debug information that can be seen on the serial ttySAC2 console. I would like to be able to remotely view this information by a telnet connection when needed. What is the best way to accomplish this? The telnet user can possibly activate some script or program. I saw there is a ttysnoop program that I could not get to compile.
There must be a simpler way. There must be several ways. Instead of using printf I could do something else. I do not want to use a normal log file to the flash file system. I had thought of using a ram file in /var directory but it would complicate matters as I would need to limit its size and the telnet user needs to view the program's printfs in a real time fashion.

SSH is initially installed and activated. What are the steps in activating FTP and Telnet on Fedora 10. I know they are non-secure and probably shouldn't be used at all, but I need to know or at least pointed in the right direction.

I would like to write a small configuration utility that will act as a daemon on the telnet port and SSH port that will only allow access to, and modification of, specific information in a structure imposed by the utility. How do I set this utility up so that when a user opens a telnet connection (or ssh) to the device, they are actually connected to the utility?

i want to open specific port using iptables i.e 3159 Whenever i tried to telnet it generates the following error
Code:
# telnet 172.16.4.100 3195
Trying 172.16.4.100...
telnet: connect to address 172.16.4.100: No route to host
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host
but when I stopped iptables
Code:
# service iptables stop
Its working fine
i added the ports in iptables i.e.
Code:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 3195 -j ACCEPT
for safe side I also added telnet port
Code:
# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 23 -j ACCEPT
but result was same.... In short telnet works without iptables but with iptables it generates the error mentioned above
