Debian :: Determine Which Programs Have Newer Than Squeeze?

Jan 5, 2011

I've tried to compile certain things and after seeing dependency hell, I just aborted and would like to make sure that I have removed all non-Squeeze programs. Is there a terminal program that checks if every program that I have belongs to the Squeeze repository?

General :: Determine Which Programs Are Using Swap / How Much

Apr 20, 2011

I'm interested in figuring out which programs on my machine are using swap, and how much each is using. I realize this can probably be done with top, but I am having trouble figuring how how.

What I've tried:

Start top
Press f (add column)
Press p (SWAP colum)

This adds a SWAP column, but the data doesn't seem to be correct. Top lists Firefox as using 582m of swap, but the header simultaneously reports that 0k of swap is being used.

Is there a better way to monitor swap usage?

Fedora Networking :: Determine Which Programs Access Internet

Mar 16, 2009

I see from the netspeed applet that my computer is downloading stuff almost constantly. Not a whole lot, 8b - 700b per second while apparently doing nothing. Some of this is just responding to broadcasts from the router, but surely not all. I would like to be able to determine which programs are accessing the internet over that wireless card, with a view to cutting down on my bandwidth usage. Is there a program that can tell me which ones are doing what at a given time?

Debian :: How To Install Newer Version Of Software

Sep 25, 2010

I want to install libtorrent-rasterbar version 0.14 or greater.

I want to use apt-get to do this.

It seems to be available here: [url]

How can I do it? My current libtorrent-rasterbar package is version 0.13 (I've ran apt-get update).

I DON'T want to install anything else. The last time I added a 'sid' source to my sources.list, it installed the untested version of EVERYTHING. Due to this, I had to reinstall the OS. I don't want this to happen again.

How to install libtorrent-rasterbar version 0.14+ on Debian 5?

Debian Multimedia :: Update To Newer XFCE Version?

This is kind of a stupid question but I haven't been able to divine a concrete answer out of Google. If "apt-get install xfce4" indeed doesn't install the newest version of XFCE in Squeeze, then how can I get it?

Debian Multimedia :: Official Policy For Newer Versions Of KDE?

Feb 27, 2011

I just wanted to ask about official opinion or policy concerning newer versions of KDE. Is 4.6 still so buggy or unstable to be included in experimental? What steps are going to be made concerning KDE and what when? I don't like GNOME, KDE 3.5 is out of the game now in 6.0 and KDE 4.4 is IMHO all but mature and finished. So I am not sure what to do now, Kubuntu is buggy and don't like it but they have 4.6...

Debian Hardware :: Crash With Intel Chipset And Newer Kernels?

Aug 31, 2010

What seems like forever ago now I tried to install Linux on this Intel 82855GME chipset laptop I was given. I started off with Fedora because it's what I'm most familiar with, unfortunately the live disk would crash at GDM so I could never get anywhere with it. Even doing a console based install would crash, but it at least pointed me in the right direction, it seemed the kernel was crashing for some reason (see image)Fedora livedisk crashlivedisk-error.jpg (95.96 KiB) Viewed 695 times

Debian Hardware :: HDA Intel Super Quiet With Newer Kernels?

May 27, 2011

I'm running kind of a mix between Wheezy and the occasional package from Sid. I've got the 2.6.32 kernel installed, as well as 2.6.38 and 2.6.39.

With the first kernel (2.6.32), my sound is normal, everything works fine. With the latter two, even using the same driver, my sound is quiet even with the volume up all the way, not to mention that somehow the available volume controls change along with this update. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar, and if they managed to fix it or work around it without just booting into the older kernel?

Debian Installation :: Wheezy On Newer Intel I210 Ethernet Controller?

Jul 31, 2013

I just bought a new server with one of the most recent v3 Intel processors (socket LGA1150). The board (Supermicro X10SLM-F) uses the new Intel NICs (i217LM + i210AT), not supported by the current Debian stable release. Hence, the ethernet adapter is not recognized during the installation process.

I would like to be able to install something as close to stable as possible in a production server such as this one.

Debian Hardware :: Installing Newer Kernel For AR9485 Driver Breaks Display

Apr 8, 2014

I'm trying to install Atheros AR9485 wireless card driver on debian, and I had no luck.

I followed this [URL] .... to install backports kernel version. The wireless card worked, however, intel display driver displayed the color in the wrong way.

Red pixels are green, and green are yellow. It was displayed like when someone try to connect a PAL system to a TV that supports only NTSC.

This is my lspci output:

Code: Select all00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT DRAM Controller (rev 09)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
00:03.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation Device 0a0c (rev 09)
00:14.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation Lynx Point-LP USB xHCI HC (rev 04)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation Lynx Point-LP HECI #0 (rev 04)

[Code] ....

Is there is a way to compile only AR9485 module from the kernel?

Add the following

Code: Select alli915.i915_enable_fbc=0 to your GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in /etc/default/grub so you would have something like that

Code: Select allGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 nomodeset quiet splash"

Debian :: Sources.list - To Determine US Or UK?

Mar 7, 2011

I have created a custom debian netinst USB stick. It has the default UK repositories in the sources list, but people in the US also need to use the stick from time-to-time.

Would it be a bad idea to mix US and UK repositories in the sources.list? Would Debian be clever enough to pick up the best repo depending on where the user is using the OS from? Or would I need to be a bit clever and create some sort of script to deal with this. (I am avoiding non-free/experimental software).

Debian :: Determine If An Service / App Is In Chrooted Jail

May 31, 2010

I am trying to find out, if an application is chrooted jail or not. I have tried to do as suggested here, but something is wrong I believe. [URL]

pidof apache2
24714 24404 24366 24365 24364 24363 24362 4923
ls -ld /proc/24714/root
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 May 31 19:05 /proc/24714/root -> /

So far so good. Now we try with postfix, ups, nothing to show ? pidof postfix Lets try with the postfix master process instead. pidof master 2623

ls -ld /proc/2623/root
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 May 31 19:07 /proc/2623/root -> /

It shows it as not being chrooted jail, which I do not understand, since I KNOW that postfix runs chrooted jail.

Debian Configuration :: How To Best Manage Partitioning When Install Programs Not From Debian Repositories

Dec 4, 2010

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application. What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.
