I have WinXP, Ubuntu 10.04 and Debian 6.0 installed on my Desktop.
After installing my latest distro, Debian 6.0 WinXP disappeared from my GRUB menu!
Relevant details are:

Recently I installed Debuan "jessie". I previously had Windows 8.1 and Xubuntu installed. After installation Debian installed it's own version of GRUB, with entries for Debian, Xubuntu and Windows. The problem is that after I selected Windows when booting, GRUB menu no longer appears. It boots straight into Windows.
It's lenovo Ideapad z510 laptop, with special button that allows me to select between 4 options before booting - one of them is "Boot menu".
I didn't use it before windows "removed" GRUB, but now there are 2 options: Windows boot loader and Ubuntu. When I select Ubuntu it loads my old boot menu (from before installing Debian).
I thought that when I use update-grub from Xubuntu I will at least eb able to boot into debian. After I did that Debian option appeared in the GRUB menu, but it didn't work - black screen.
How to get GRUB menu working again (and avoid replacing it by windows boot loader)?
I've got an old Dell Precision 670 which has a SCSI disk. I installed 10.04 and everything worked fine - I could boot into 10.04 from the GRUB menu. I later added an IDE disk and installed WinXP Pro on it.
When I ran 'sudo update-grub', Lucid discovered the IDE disk and added a WinXP Pro entry to the GRUB menu. Now, though I can still boot 10.04 from the GRUB menu, I can't boot WinXP - the screen goes blank, and I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.

I had to reload my XP partition and my grub menu disappeared. I followed direction from this web page [URL]. I followed Method 1. After I rebooted I got a command prompt with a notice stating Minimal BASH-like line editing is suppoerted. When I input the final command of sudo update-grub I get the unknown command error. I cannot get to either XP or Ubuntu is there anything I can do short of reloading my ubuntu?

When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian Squeeze, and I have a gnome theme called "Moomex" installed. I have had it for a while and it has worked fine, until it suddenly stopped displaying menu scroll arrows (like for long bookmark menus in web browsers). I can still scroll, but in place of the arrows is a solid colored rectangle that clashes with my theme. I went searching and found my theme's arrow image files (see code below). I have no idea how these files are implemented into the theme display, so I don't know how to re-enable them. I tried reinstalling the theme, but it changed nothing. These arrows show up just fine in any other stock theme, and they were fine in this one too until they randomly disappeared.

I just installed it on one of my neighbors computers.I tried deleting an applet from the top menu bar and the entire menu bar disappeared. I click on the add new menu bar and it just throws something up on the side. I'm using 10.04. I never had this problem before.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

I installed ubuntu 10.10, dual boot with winxp then I ran the update manager and now I don't have the option to boot into windows.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed karmic to a flash drive, and grub overwrote my winxp mbr. On boot it has an error that grub can't load and then shows the grub rescue prompt. I've tried fixboot and fixmbr and bootcfg /rebuild from the repair console with no luck. Grub loads if I leave the flash drive in, but it takes a long time.

I have two HDD, one of 80 GB with Lubuntu and a broken windows, the other HDD is 160 GB with another Win Xp, but it seems its windows boot loader is broken or the windows boot loader was essentially on the 80 GB HDD and was replaced by GRUB. GRUB only detect the WinXp on the 80 GB HDD. How can I make GRUB detect winXp on the 160 GB HDD?
View 9 Replies View RelatedUpon booting, the existing grub menu shows the Debian OS, but I also have Ubuntu installed on the same hard disk. It does not show in the menu. Previously I had Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint. In Ubuntu config file (menu.lst) I wanted to delete Mint and an old Ubuntu. I did so. In doing this I must have removed the 'full' menu.lst,leaving only Debian. So now I cannot boot into the new Ubuntu. I presently have only two OS on the hard disk: Debian and Ubuntu. I cant see Ubuntu, How do I correct this problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop alongside WinXP. For some reason Grub hides my CD drive from WinXP but not Ubuntu. I can access the drive in Ubuntu, but it doesn't appear in WinXP at all.
I know there is a solution to this, but I can't remember what it is. Something to do with modifying grub.conf or something like that.
I am running fedora 11 and I am configuring my menu.ist file. I attached the menu.ist file in txt extension. What I want is:
1- I want the first option to be Windows XP (which is on the second HD) and I want the text to be Windows XP instead of Other. This option should be the default (so if I didn't press anything it will boot from xp).
2- To remove the 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i686.PAE kernel from the list and keep the 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586.img available as a second option.
3- Increase the countdown time to 10 seconds.
I've been trying to setup some installation partitions made with Debian and Windows Installation CDs/Images and everything works well with the Debian, but not Windows. This is a similar setup as some Laptop companies do by putting a hidden "recovery" partition.How do I get grub to boot say WinXp/Win9x or what have you?Is there a better alternative?
View 6 Replies View Relatedi just installed the Debian on my old laptop. The install went fine but after that, the GRUB menu loads and freezes. I simply can't do anything. I checked menu.lst and the timeout is set to 5 but still nothing happens. It won't load. I then tried to load with the "super GRUB disk"but the same problem - as soon as it loads from the CD, it freezes and I can't do anything. Before I had Xubuntu on the same laptop but there was no Grub menu. It simply loaded. There's only 1 OS on the laptop /currently Debian/ - no windows, no other Linux.

I changed my menu.lst to use
root=UUID=<long uuid string>
instead of the good old
root=/dev/sd...
I did that because, if I boot with a usb drive attached to my computer, sda become sdb and therefor nothing works anymore since my friend Kernel can't mount it's root partition. BTW, it works wonders using the UUIDs. The story darkens each time there is a kernel update, dist-upgrade resets my menu.lst back using the /dev/sd... format. and BANG... no more booting again. I am good to change my menu.lst back each time.
At the moment I have a list that has: Debian 6.0 + kernel information etc Debian 6.0 same again (Recovery Mode) Windows XP Home Edition etc when all I really want is: Debian 6.0 Recovery Mode Windows XP you used to be able to just edit menu.lst but it seems not now.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been a happy little GRUB user for a while now, but now I want to use GRUB to boot a physically separate WinXP hard drive, and I can't seem to do that. Normally GRUB is easy, (I even have a nice splash screen of my own making). Its a champion solution for booting into Ubuntu Linux on /dev/sda5 or Win XP on /dev/sda1.
My second HD which Linux recognizes as /dev/sdb, has a Win XP boot sector and Win XP in one partition.
Normally I boot off /dev/sda using GRUB, and from Linux I can mount and have access to /dev/sdb - that works well. Occasionally however, I need to boot the separate Win XP system on the second HD, and to do that I switch the boot drive in the BIOS, but lately that is getting to be a bit tedious.
Initially I though to give the additional boot choice to GRUB, I simply had to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and point to the second HD (where /dev/sdb = hd1 in GRUB speak). Unfortunately, when I select the new choice, it simply boots Win XP off the first HD.
I'm confident GRUB does look at the first partion on hd1 as expected as I can induce an error by having hd1 disconnected, or write silly partion numbers into menu.lst. So if it does in fact find the first partion on hd1, why doesn't it boot? Why does it default to WinXP on hd0?
I have diligently tried physically swapping SATA drive cables and playing with bios switching and have messed about a fair bit with menu.lst to make sure I have drive and partition numbers right, but all to no avail. I have also tried changing rdisk(0) in boot.ini to rdisk(1) on the second drive when it is not the boot drive.
I'm afraid the only other thing I can think of is that the second hard drive requires a Linux boot sector if I am going to boot it up from GRUB, but somehow that doesn't make sense. Surely GRUB can work across physically separate drives, so I'm open to other ideas first.
Here's today's problem: I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and hope to have it run alongside Win XP PRO, which it had for months.
Only, when I select WinXP in GRUB, nothing happens. Oh the screen goes dark for a few seconds, but then the GRUB screen reappears. Ubuntu 10.04 functions correctly.

Today I installed a fresh copy of F12 and I noticed that I have no icons in any menu of any application - Desktop, Nautilus, Firefox, Pidgin, OpenOffice - nowhere.I only have them in the Main Gnome Menu and that's it.Does any body know what can cause this problem and how to fix it?BTW,I've been using Fedora starting from F6 and I can claim that F12 is indeed one of the most awful release that I've seen I used to successfully upgrade to each next major release up to F11, but F12 made me completely reinstall my OS, cause there were tones of bugs after the upgrade including not working WiFi
