Debian Multimedia :: Browsers And Multimedia Players Conlict And Crash?

May 23, 2011

Using Debian stable. 64-Bit. I can play videos and music using Totem and VLC. And I can play audio files with audacious and Rhythmbox. And I can play flash in firefox and google-chrome. But, if I open audacious and then play a flash file in Firefox or google-chrome audacious crashes as well as other multimedia players that I have open such as Totem, VLC and/or Ryhthmbox.

Would like to know if you can offer some troubleshooting steps to take so that I can play a flash file in a browser and still play an mp3 file in the audio player without having to kill those processes and restart.

Debian Multimedia :: Urdu Font Characters Appear Disjointed In Browsers

Oct 1, 2010

I'm on a Debian Lenny system. I recently installed scim to use the Urdu language and have gotten it to work by following the instructions on this website.

Everything works except that Iceweasel and Epiphany don't display the typed Urdu fonts properly. The characters are there but sometimes they don't join properly.

This problem doesn't occur with other programs such as OpenOffice, etc.

How fonts should be displayed (eg. OpenOffice): [URL]

How fonts are displayed in Iceweasel: ہ ا ں

How do I make Iceweasel and Epiphany behave properly? The characters remain disjointed even if I select the traditional keyboard method of entering text (i.e. via the Keyboard Indicator GNOME applet [India>Urdu]).

I have the appropriate locales installed:

locale -a
C
en_US.utf8
hi_IN
hi_IN.utf8
POSIX
ur_PK
ur_PK.utf8

I've noticed that even though these characters appear disjointed in Iceweasel or Epiphany, they appear normal when I look at the entered text, via Firefox in Windows. That's strange.

The Character Encoding is the same in the browsers on both OS s - UTF8. So clearly this isn't a character encoding issue I guess. There appears to be a problem with the way Urdu fonts are rendered in the Debian version of Firefox (gecko engine issue maybe?).

Debian Multimedia :: Upgraded To Jessie From Wheezy - Sound Plays On Everything But Browsers

Dec 25, 2014

I just installed wheezy and upgraded to jessie. I had previously gotten sound working in wheezy by installing the flashplugin-nonfree and flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound packages, after configuring my headset in system settings. However, now I can't get sound to play in firefox. I've installed flashplugin-nonfree, flashplugin-nonfree-extrasound, and pulseaudio, still without luck. The volume is turned all the way up in alsamixer, sound tests play fine, and I can play music in VLC without any problems. This leads me to believe it's not a problem with drivers, but with some package I'm missing that will allow firefox to play sound. Sound wasn't working in the default video player either, before I installed the flash plugin. Is there something I'm missing?

Also, sound doesn't play on Konqueror either (KDE browser), which seems to indicate it's a problem with flash and not with firefox itself. After removing the flash plugin and installing pepperflashplugin-nonfree to ensure the pepper plugin was used instead of flash, sound still would not play in chromium, so I reinstalled the flash plugin and still don't have sound in any browser.

Ubuntu :: Flash Video Freezes All Browsers

Oct 14, 2010

I don't know what happened, but sometime within the last week I have started having a really annoying issue. Whenever I open a web page, that contains embedded Flash, in any browser (Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, or Opera), the entire browser, and all windows and tabs, freezes for about :15 seconds or so. After that time, everything unfreezes and works as normal, except for the video which often times doesn't even play after the freeze occurs. I don't believe I have made any major changes to my system, just the updates that show up in the notification area.

Debian Multimedia :: Can't Change Login Background

May 28, 2015

I recently installed Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment. I don't like the background in the login screen and want to change it. After some Googling I discovered that the path to the background is stored in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf.

Unfortunately, whenever I change the background field I'm left with a black background during login. (Yes, I triple checked that I spelt the path correctly). Does the login background have to meet some criteria I don't know about, like being a certain resolution?

EDIT: Here's the content of /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf:
Code: Select all#
# background = Background file to use, either an image path or a color (e.g. #772953)
# theme-name = GTK+ theme to use
# icon-theme-name = Icon theme to use
# font-name = Font to use
# xft-antialias = Whether to antialias Xft fonts (true or false)

Debian Multimedia :: Integrated Intel Video And High-def Video W/vaapi?

Jul 6, 2011

I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:

1.aptitude install libdrm libva.

2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.

3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.

My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?

Debian Multimedia :: Block Diagram Of Sound System

Aug 6, 2011

Does anyone know where I could find a block diagram of the Squeeze sound system with all the possible permutations thereof. I am primarily interested in OSS4 on a KDE4 desk top. I want something that shows all possible inputs, all possible outputs and all of the component programs in between. At this point I am really confused by all of the possible packages and how they interact with each other.

My present OSS4 installation works with oss4test, VLC, etc. but doesn't work with iceweasel. I have installed all of the recommended packages to no avail. I have an Intel DP55KG mother board with the Intel HD sound system on board.

I've looked up various suggestions but none of them seem to work - the appearances window does not ever seem to change the background image for the login screen. Also, whenever I log out or when I close the lid on my laptop and it suspends, I am unable to log back in - all I see is a black screen and my cursor, which I can move.

General :: Watch Flash Video But Block Out Part Of It?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm learning a foreign language. There are several online sites that have Flash video in the language I'm learning (e.g., Hulu), which is great. Unfortunately, they have English subtitles, which is (depending on who you ask) somewhere between "annoying" and "actively harmful to my learning".When I'm watching them in a window, I can just move them near the bottom of the screen, or put another window over them. That's awkward, but it kind of works. But I'd like to watch them full-screen, on my TV set. Full-screen Flash doesn't let me put any window on top of it.Is there a way to watch an online Flash video but block out part of it?

Debian :: Security Status Of Web Browsers

Dec 16, 2015

In the Release Notes for Jessie, it is stated that webkit browsers do not receive security updates in a timely manner and so are not secure. It is recommended that one uses a gecko-based browser or Chromium for 'general' web browsing. Yet I haven't read anything about this elsewhere and I'm guessing a lot of people don't read the Release Notes, so perhaps it's only something I would only need to worry about if I worked for MI6?

Anyway, Chromium and Iceweasel are becoming far too sluggish for my computer. I would want to experiment with Konqueror, Midori, Epiphany and Opera, but don't want to do anything insecure. I'm of the understanding that without Mandatory Access Control, exploits in applications often allow attackers to access all of the user's files; I want to avoid that.

On the Opera page on Debian Wiki, it says 'Opera is a non-free (proprietary) software. It isn't supported by Debian. It's probably wiser to use a supported web browser ! '.
