OpenSUSE Hardware :: Nouveau Video Driver For GForce 7300 Card In 11.4 With KDE

Jun 13, 2011

I would like to use Nouveau rather than NVidia proprietary drivers. I am very experienced with Linux but a bit clueless with monitors. I got rather close to a working setup, but just can't get the resolution and maybe H/V sync frequency of my monitor correct.

My system:

OpenSUSE 11.4 32-bit
Gforce 7300
KDE desktop
Acer 21" LCD monitor, non-wide screen, it can do 1600x1200

X configuration: No x.org.conf file, and only one modified file in xorg.conf.d, namely to specify the driver "nouveau" (by the way, is that even needed??) According to lsmod, nouveau loads perfectly. However, KDE starts-up in an odd, non-useful screen resolution. 3d works, slowly, which is OK. I specifically want 1024x768 resolution, but am not able to specify a different resolution in the Display configuration section of the KDE control center (I understand that is perhaps normal).

I tried inserting text into the xorg.conf.d/50-monitor, not really knowing what to add or where and eventually got 1024x768 but the display was unstable, blinking off and on every so-often, and the screen edges were off.I am pretty sure I simply need to put information about my monitor and desired resolution into some file(s) in xorg.conf.d/ or maybe build a dreaded xorg.conf file. I know of the "cvt" utility, and I have a hunch this is part of the solution.

Ubuntu :: Multi Monitor With Nvidia 7300 Card

Apr 1, 2011

I have a dual monitor setup with a nVidia 7300 card. I'm not sure exactly when this started to happen, but it's happened for a couple of years at least. when I'm in one or the other monitor the cursor will sometimes "stick" in that monitor and refuse to go to the other monitor. it'll just 'wrap around' as when I go to the right part of the monitor, it'll then jump to the left side, and vice versa. Also once in awhile, if I'm in one monitor, the cursor will be taken away and put on the other monitor. I'm just now starting to see a few patterns on what's happening. It's worse if I have VCL playing in the left monitor, (my secondary), and I've got a program maximized in the right (primary) monitor. That's when it'll 'stick' on the right monitor. After I roll up the program or minimize it, then it'll free the mouse. But it's not instant. After it's freed, it still doesn't work exactly. If you click on any program on the left monitor, then you have to move back and forth before the mouse will work on the left monitor.

The second problem I'm having happens only on the secondary monitor. At times the precision is WAY off. For example, if I try to put the mouse right on an icon, and click it. It won't work. But if I move the mouse over to the right or left, suddenly the pop-up comment box pops up, the icon is highlighted and clicking will run the program. It can be off as much as 100 pixels! I've seen these problems in all sorts of GUIs; XFCE, DXCE, KDE 3.x (I never tried it in KDE 4.x since it was nearly unusable) and Gnome. Right now I've only see this on Ubuntu 8.04.01, to 9.10 (I never went past 9.10), and at first I thought it was X since all GUIs had problems. But someone now says that nVidia's driver might be to blame. If you can tell me what command to type in at the terminal, I can supply the current video driver's version.

Hardware :: Debian Video Card - Nvidia And HDMI ?

Jul 15, 2009

I intend to update my video card to allow the operation of all three of my monitors in a triple monitor configuration. I have a 790i motherboard with Nvidia chips, so I will most likely choose an Nvidia card for the upgrade. As I will need connections for three monitors, I will have to have two cards. It is my intention to have one large screen field spread across all three monitors. I assume the best way of doing this will be to use an SLI Bridge to link the two video cards. Thus the two video cards must be identical.

Question 01: Is this the best way of realizing a triple monitor setup?

While I am upgrading, I desire to also give the system the ability to play Blue-Ray High Def Movie one of the 1920x1200 monitors I will be using.

Question 02: What are the pitfalls of playing BD-Discs on Debian. I know I will be eventually acquiring a BD-Disc player (once the prices come down a bit more), but when shelling out for two video cards, I better think as far ahead as possible and get the two video cards that will do everything I can foresee them needing to do.

Question 03: As all of my monitors have HDMI input ports, I assume that I will need Video cards that have HDMI output ports to play full 1080P movies. Is this a valid assumption?

Question 04: Can anyone recommend a video card that does what I am wanting it to do? (This is to say Two Dual Link DVI connectors and an HDMI connector per video card with standard and high definition video playback capabilities). Keep in mind that I will most likely need to purchase two of them, to the Super Expensive Bleeding Edge cards are probably not going to be a practical option here.

Question 05: Is there a way that I can just play the BD-Discs with full resolution in a window on one of the three monitors I will have connected to the computer without having to go the HDMI route?

Debian Configuration :: Installing Nvidia Graphics Card - Driver Error

Apr 28, 2010

I revived my old desktop (failed psu), and installed debian squeeze using netinst. It has a nvidia geForce 7600GT card. The driver in squeeze does not work very well, so I downloaded nvidia driver-installer. When I run it, it comes back with an error saying the kernel (I assume the nvidia graphics kernel) is compiled with gcc4.3, but the system is using gcc4.4. Using synaptic manager, I installed gcc3.3, but same error.

Next I tried to uninstall gcc4.4 and it gave a warning the system might not be usable. I did not understand it, but I went ahead and uninstalled gcc4.4 and guess what, the system is not usable, and I have to re-install squeeze. Not a big loss, since I do not have much in it. How to install this nvidia driver, specifically, how do I get switch to gcc4.3 from gcc4.3? Also, the squeeze install gave me 2.6.33-trunk-amd64, and 2.6.33-3-amd64. How do I get rid of ...trunk-amd64? Do I just delete it from grub?

Debian Hardware :: Video Card - Failed To Initialize NVidia Kernel Module

Aug 9, 2011

I am trying to get my Debian system running. I have an older Dell Precision 490 with two dual core CPUs. It has 16G Ram, an 150G Intel solid state drive, a 230G data drive, and a 600G backup drive. I have two Samsung monitors attached to the NVIDIA Geforce FX 5xx card. I have been using this machine for several years with Etch, then Lenny, running KDE 3.5. I recently needed to upgrade to Squeeze and KDE4 and have had nothing but problems since. I keep having issues with the video drivers, every time I touch anything the drivers seem to upgrade from the legacy 173 to the current 195.

There have been other library compatibility issues as well (gclib) and the machine has not been stable. This morning the system was running very slowly with X running at 100% (from top) and then the entire system froze. After a hard reboot, X did restart. The Xorg.0.log has the following message:
"Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly..."

Debian Hardware :: Xorg Driver For AMD Need ATI 9834 Video Card?

Jul 24, 2014

I just purchased an Acer Aspire V5-123 notebook with AMD processor and graphic and installed Debian 7.6 (stable) on it. first of all, I had to install a newer (3.14.0.bpo.1-amd64) kernel image to get the ethernet card working. Then, I got problem with Xorg not starting.

Here is the error lines from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Code: Select all(EE) VESA(0): V_BIOS address 0x0 out of range
...
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

and this is the output by issuing lspci:

Code: Select alllspci -nn | grep VGA:
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device [1002:9834]

I installed the libgl1-mesa-dri, xserver-xorg-video-ati, and firmware-linux-nonfree packages, as suggested by AtiHowTo from Debian Wiki, but the problem still persists and the last one (firmware-linux-nonfree) actually caused the notebook to freeze on boot. so, I removed it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Using The Video Card Nvidia 7800GT On An AMD4200, MB T6100 - Unable To Install From The Iso?

May 3, 2010

Using the video card Nvidia 7800GT on an AMD4200, MB T6100, I am unable to install from the iso, as progression is halted by a video mode that is unviewable. (black and white rows). I can get to the "f6" menu, however once I attempt an install it fails. My main goal is to install Mythbuntu, however the problem seems to be with the Unbuntu install drivers. This post worked to get around this on version 6.10, however these instructions no longer work. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=379807

Is there any way to use the newest Nvidia drivers that should work from a new install CD? I do not see a command line option, which would seem to allow me to install and update and setup the distro, THEN add my drivers before I run xconf.
