Debian Configuration :: Ssh Randomly Stopped Working On Server?

Mar 15, 2010

I'm in somewhat of a sticky situation. ssh has just randomly stopped working on my server after a power failure. Everything else that doesn't rely on ssh is still working fine though. It can still receive mail and everything, just no ssh.Background on the server, running debian etch on a PPC machine.ssh is (supposed to be) running on port 2000. Even if I am physically logged into the machine I can't log in with ssh -p 2000 user@127.0.0.1.
I can ssh to and from any other machine on my network (the server can even ssh into another machine). So it isn't my network causing issues.It seems like the port 2000 is completely closed, if nmap the server's IP address I get PORT STATE SERVICE

25/tcp open smtp
80/tcp open http
110/tcp open pop3

Debian Configuration :: Plex Media Server Suddenly Stopped Working

Jan 27, 2016

My plex media server suddenly stopped working after years of no hassle use. This is the output of cat /proc/version = Linux version 3.2.0-4-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-14) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.2.65-1+deb7u2

My problem is similar to this forum thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=121945 where I can get it to start by running Code: Select all/usr/sbin/start_pms & but it's not my normal server configuration. I added a couple files to it and it seems to work except it doesn't start when I reboot. I have to run that command again.This is the init script I've been running for years...

Code: Select all----
#!/bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides:          plexmediaserver
# Required-Start:    $remote_fs $syslog $networking
# Required-Stop:

[code]....

My Debian skills are lacking to know how to proceed with troubleshooting what could have happened. Everything else seems fine, I just can't seem to get this application to run at startup or get back my old configuration...

Debian Configuration :: Upgraded To 2.6.32 => Home Gateway Stopped Working

Feb 3, 2010

I was running 2.6.26 and I've recently upgraded to 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 along with other packages (mostly dependencies)... which possibly involved the network stack.

After this upgrade my home gateway stopped working and I'm clueless to where the problem may be.

I can see that the iptables are still there when I type:

iptables -t filter -L -v -n -x --line-numbers
iptables -t nat -L -v -n -x --line-numbers

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze X Login Stopped Working - Console Works

Mar 30, 2011

I have been using my system for couple of weeks, and normally update software when the icon is displayed on top bar (gnome). Last couple of days there were updates for X, and I am not sure whether that is the cause of my problem. Once bootup, I get the login screen. When enter the password the login screen keep coming back. there is no error about any password issue, or anything. It keeps prompt me to enter the password.

I could login back the following way.

1. ctrl + alt + F1 , and login with the same username/pwd as for X
2.change to root
3.pkill gdm3
4.exit from root to user privilege
5. startx

The system starts X correctly and no login screen is displayed. I could use the system as usual.

The only thing I did custom to my system was upgrading to the latest kernel (2.6.38) using the source. This was to get support for my hardware, but that was about a month ago. I do not see anything in /var/log (X, demesg etc).

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Connection Randomly Stopped Working?

Feb 6, 2010

My ubuntu karma desktop is plugged into a wired connection that goes through a router and into my cable modem.Everything was working fine like it had been foseveral months yesterday morningSomething happened by the end of the day that has screwed up my wired networking. I plugged my laptop into the same cable thats plugged into my ubuntu, and the cat5 cable is live. Also when I plug said cable into the ubuntu box, the ethernet lights come on, or atleast a solid green one. Meanwhile the network connections Icon continues to have a red X and a tooltip saying "No network connection".

Under network settings, there is only one wired network "Auto eth0", but it says "last used: never" which is strange since I've been using this for months. When I click edit the main settings are MTU automatic, ipv4 automatic DHCP, and ipv6 ignore.hat could the problem be? By chance did a karma update get released that broke the networking

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Randomly Stopped Working Until Rebooted?

Jun 17, 2010

Following is the specification of my user environment.

Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit
Acer Aspire 5542
AMD Turion 2 X2 M500 (2.2 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)
ATI Radeon HD 4200
4GB DDR2 Memory
500 GB HDD 5400 RPM

Sometimes, both on Gnome MPlayer and Movie Player, videos clips won't play. I use mainly MKV file format and quite often, AVI. I have also installed Ubuntu-Restricted-Extras.

The players will literally not play. When I scroll, it goes through the video clip as if I'm fast forwarding when paused, and then it would still be frozen.

I only use Gnome MPlayer and it's been working fine until like two weeks ago, and when it happens it's also the same for the Movie Player. The problem stays there until I reboot my laptop.

It's random but quite often and it's now doing my head in. It would be nice if any of you gents could give me a good solution without getting involved another player, because I really like Gnome MPlayer.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Connexant / NVidia Audio Just Randomly Stopped Working?

Mar 18, 2011

My Compaq Presario F739WM laptop has a Connexant HD Audio/NVidia MCP51 (reported by lspci) sound card.Ubuntu has always supported the card with no problem except the random popping noise but then I found a work around for that.Now for some reason, when I first turn on my computer and at login screen I can hear Ubuntu noises, yet seems once I login, no more sound or sometimes the successfully logged in sound.

The only changes that I have since the sound worked, was I installed pulseaudio but that caused no problems with that. The other change was a few kernel upgrades and other packages through normal update manager.I have checked that snd_hda_intel driver was loaded in the kernel and in alsa, all seems well.Pulse detects audio output in it's meter.I also tested the sound card to make sure it wasn't bad, in Windows 7 (dual boot) and it wokrs perfectly.

Fedora Networking :: Network Connection Intermittent After DHCP Configuration - Stops Working Randomly

Jul 17, 2009

I'm having a bizarre problem where my network connection stops working randomly. At first I thought it was a DNS issue since Firefox simply chilled out on "Looking up [hostname]" until it timed out, but after further investigation (pinging IP's, "host" and "dig" being unable to reach servers) it became apparent that I couldn't even access the DNS servers i.e. the Wicked Connection of the East was most sincerely dead.

There are two strange things about this: one, there are no errors except "timeout". The network manager is happy, Firefox is happy until the lookup fails... Two, the failures only start *after* DHCP configuration. DHCP configuration never has any trouble sending or receiving packets. I'm going to try static IP and whatnot to see if that helps, more information later.

Debian :: Configuration Files Randomly Become Unwritable

Aug 15, 2011

Occasionally, with no warning and no cause that I've been able to see, everything that I try to open will produce an error message saying that an associated configuration file For example, I try to open dolphin, and I get a message saying: 'Configuration file "/home/<user>/.kde/share/config/dolphinrc" not writable. Please contact your system administrator.' I get similar ones for konsole, open office, and everything else I try to open, except firefox, which I installed by hand. Konsole still works after this error, but dolphin and open office do not. This never happens directly after startup (it usually happens about an hour after), and always happens to everything - I never get this message for just one program, while everything else works fine. I've tried deleting /home/<user>/.kde/ to 'reset' kde, but that hasn't helped. In case it helps, I'm running Squeeze (amd64) with kde 4.4.5.

Debian Configuration :: Getting NFS Server Working

Jul 20, 2015

Debian Jessie on a raspberry pi 2

I'm trying to get nfs server working at boot up and it isn't starting because it says portmapper isn't running. I've read through a bunch of documentation on this and have gotten to the point that if the documentation tells me to Code: Select all$ apt-get install nfs-kernel-server portmap I usually stop there as it is outdated. I cant find a process doc that utilizes rpcbind. So, here is what I've done on my own:

setup /etc/exports with a proper nfs dir and exportfs it
Code: Select all$ apt-get install nfs-common nfs-kernel-server
$ sysv-rc-conf
---│ nfs-kerne$  [ ]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]        │
---│ rpcbind     [ ]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [X]     [ ]     [ ]     [ ]        │
$ service rpcbind start

[Code] ....

The errors however don't seem critical as I'm able to mount the exported directory. OK so it appears to me that nfs server is working. However through a boot, the nfs-kernel-server and the rpcbind services are not starting. The nfs-kernel-server didn't start because rpcbind wasn't running. So I start rpcbind and then nfs-kernel-server and then nfs server works. So what am I missing? Why will rpcbind not start at boot?

Debian :: Flash In Iceweasel Stopped Working

Apr 27, 2010

I just got a new pc after my two pc's decided to die. I have had them for many years, maybe around 2001. So, I am new to this 64 bit OS. I'm running squeeze amd64. I am having some troubles with flash in Iceweasel. It just stopped working one day. So, I downloaded Firefox to see if flash would work in it. Here's the interesting thing. Iceweasel will play flash. I will close the browser and reopen to discover it no longer wants to play flash. I'll open Firefox, then close it. I'll then open Iceweasel and Flash will work in Iceweasel again.

This happens often. To get Flash to work, I just close Iceweasel, open Firefox, close Firefox, open Iceweasel and go to a flash site and all is good. Is there something I can do to get Flash to always work without opening Firefox?

Quote:edit /etc/firefox/firefoxrc -- change the line FIREFOX_DSP="none" to FIREFOX_DSP="aoss"neither of those have done anything. Have tried using both the flashplugin-nonfree and flashplayer-mozilla, same thing on either. ALL other sound works, smplayer, amarok, system sounds, etc.

Fedora Networking :: VNC Server On Desktop 0 On 14 Stopped Working ?

Mar 9, 2011

For more than a year I was happily using my Fedora 11 remotely through VNC over ssh. I was using desktop 0 on port 5900 so people at the office can see what I am doing.

Yesterday I upgraded to Fedora 12, then 13 and then 14. I installed all updates of F14. All went well until I came to use this server from home as usual. The server was not responding.

I brought up /etc/X11/xorg.conf from a backup tape because I discovered that it is there that screen 0 is set and not in /etc/sysconfig/vncservers and rebooted. No success!

At the command lsof | grep LISTEN, I could not see a listener on port 5900

I activated screen 1 on port 5901 and I could log in OK and with lsof I could see listeners for ports 5901 and 6001 but I need screen 0!

During the day I tried many things including removing the vncserver packages with yum and re-installing them, removing the .vnc folder in the user home folder and starting from scratch. The server is still refusing connection!

Debian :: Wakeonlan Stopped Working On Upgrade To Jessie

Jul 2, 2015

Dell Vostro 230 with integrated Broadcom NIC.

Wakeonlan was working just fine with Wheezy on this machine. After upgrade, wakeonlan will resume from suspend but not from shutdown.

I have no problem with other machines (same software setup) after upgrade. None of my other machines have a broadcom NIC.

No BIOS settings were changed during the upgrade. If I enter the BIOS on boot and make sure settings are correct then 'save' and shutdown, without booting to debian, I can then successfully wakeonlan. Then, if I do not boot debian, but shutdown before debian starts, I can wakeonlan successfully again.

If I boot debian and then shutdown, game over: wakeonlan nolonger works.

$ ethtool eth0 | grep -i wake
Supports Wake-on: g
Wake-on: g

A bit of research found the suggestion:

$ lspci -tv | grep -i ether
+-1c.2-[02]----00.0 Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM57788 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe

$ cat /proc/acpi/wakeup
Device S-state Status Sysfs node

How to get wakeonlan working under Jessie with a Broadcom BCM57788?
