Debian Installation :: Installer Doesn't Detect Ethernet Card

Dec 19, 2010

I am trying to install Debian Lenny (64 bit) on my brand new Toshiba laptop (intel i3, 3 GB RAM) and for some reason the installer cannot detect the ethernet card. This is the error message I get:"No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list."And then there's a list which is quite long -- and I cannot replicate it here. But I want to know why the installer cannot find the ethernet card on its own or find the appropriate driver. In any case how can I fix this problem?

Debian Configuration :: No Wireless In Squeeze With Broadcom Card

Oct 30, 2010

I just installed fresh Squeeze to my new hpmini 210-1100 netbook. No wireless. I have checked and I have Network Manager installed already.

I also compiled and installed Broadcom driver from here[url]

I followed their instructions and compiled the driver. I did get a wl.ko driver and installed it insmod wl.ko after modprobe lib80211

I noticed after rebooting neither wl.ko nor lib80211 showed when i did lsmod. So I did modprobe and insmod again. Still no wireless. Here are output of some commands that I thought would be relevant.

lspci:

I see only 2 computer icon in the system tray but not the parallel bars. When I went to System>Administration>Network, I was not able to add my wireless network name. The Add button was grayed out.

Debian Configuration :: Ethernet Card Missing/Compile Latest Kernel?

Dec 17, 2010

This may sound ridiculous, but after installing Debian 5 (from CD 1) in my laptop, ASUS UL80VT, it fails to detect the Ethernet device. The device is "Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Ethernet Controller". I guess the problem comes with the old kernel of version 5. I was intending to compile the latest kernel anyway. But the problem is is there any heads up i need to download the kernel and trying to compile it? Is there anyone who uses Debian on UL80VT. If there is, does it works okay?In short I want to compile the latest kernel, hoping it will fix the Ethernet device. There are installers available with the latest kernel. But I want to do it on my own.

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Won't Detect Laptop Ethernet Card?

Nov 15, 2010

so, when i first got my laptop it came with vista and the ethernet worked fine, then when I decided to install Karmic about 9 months ago it still worked fine. After a while the update for lucid came out so I upgraded to that and then the ethernet started getting buggy. It would only work about half the time that i wanted it too and the other half of the time it would just stare at me and not move anywhere. So along with a couple other bugs I decided to format my harddrive and downgrade back to karmic and await the 10.10 release. unfortunatly my ethernet woes carried with me and they still would only show up on occasion. then about half way through my time with karmic round 2 it stopped altogether, and with the upgrade back to lucid it hasn't seemed to solve itself.

I ran through ifconfig -a, lspci and sudo ifup -a but they all tell me that the device doesn't exist.

General :: Debian 5.0.8 Won't Detect Ethernet Adapter

Jan 31, 2011

I'm installing Debian 5.0.8 on a Dell Latitude E6410 using the network install x86 CD.

Unfortunately, it won't detect my Ethernet adapter. Specifically, I get the error: No Ethernet card was detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card, you can select it from the list.

lspci shows: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 10ea (rev 05)

That should correspond to the e1000e driver. But, if I select it from the list, the install CD still fails to detect it.

Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 are able to use this device with no problem.

Does anybody know what I can do to make Debian use/recognize my ethernet adapter?

Edit: Additional Info:

I think this is an Intel 82577LM Gigabit Ethernet chipset. If I switch from the graphical installer to the console and run lsmod, I see e1000e with a use count of 0.

Debian Installation :: Ethernet Not Found Squeeze Net Install PPC Ibook G4?

I was going to try out Squeeze on my ibook so I downloaded one of the weekly snapshots of the netinstall image and booted the installer. The installer was unable to recognize the ethernet card of my ibook which I found odd since I have used Lenny in the past without having any problems. Does anyone know if this is a bug in the installer or has firmware for my ethernet card been dropped from Squeeze? I searched around and couldn't find any bugs that were specific to PPC with this installer. It is not a deal breaker as I can just install Lenny and then dist upgrade to Squeeze,

Networking :: Wired Ethernet Conection Deminished On Debian Squeeze?

Jan 22, 2011

I have a generic P4 desktop computer with Debian Squeeze. Since instalation my wired ethernet connection will slowely slow down and then quit when surfing the web. Sometimes it seems worse than othertimes. If it fails I usualy can get it to come back back up by going to Network Connections and clicking on "wired connection"and them just closing the window. It will work for a bit but the conection will inevitably quit in a short time again. Interstingly it seems mostly a problem with web browsers as doing upgrades, package instalations, using SMXI and things of this sort do not seem to be a problem. I have tried both Epiphany and the Squeeze default Iceweasel with identical results. Also when using Google Earth a similar situation occurs in about 2 minuits of use. The same computer running Debian Lenny with Epiphany and WXP with the dreaded IE do not have this problem.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze D-u - Kernel Configuration Skipped

Jul 6, 2010

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.

I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.

I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.

So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.

However, just in case someone else runs into this:

1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.

2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

Debian Installation :: No Ethernet Card Detected

Jul 28, 2015

I am installing Linux for the first time right now and I am facing a bit of an issue when it comes to network hardware driver installation. The NIC on my motherboard is a Marvel 88E1111 (computer is very old). During the installation of Debian, I got to a menu which read "No Ethernet card detected. If you know the name of the driver needed by your Ethernet card you can select it from the list", then provides me with said list of driver names.

However, the only driver I could find that came close the NIC I am using was one called just "Marvel", and selecting actually didn't do anything (screen flashes blue and returns me to the same menu). So I continued by selecting the "none of the above" option, and now the new menu reads: "A driver for your hardware is not available. You may need to load drivers from removable media (...)". So I thought I should google for the drivers and see what I can find. The official site of the company that made my NIC doesn't even list my model in their drivers' list (to be expected since it is so old).

Then I found this: URL.., but I was expecting more of a download than the source code itself.

It reported "cannot install continue" after the diskpartion step have been successed; (3). It said "netinstall may be a choice", so I say "Yes" and It really downloading something (543 files) and successed . After reboot, I loggin and cannot link to the internet. There is no such files ralated to netware config and I'm not able to config that, for I'm always only a bar finder in an meau.(shy a little, but this is ture). I do it 4 times and the situation and results are the same that I got a smallest netinstalled debian system on my computer and I cannot play music, cannot link to internet. I wonder: How could I install a real debian on my computer? Need I download anther version of iso file or do something that I do not know to makes it works. I can burn an iso image to a real CD by my old computer. I can also install OS such as mint via USB flash drive. In the computer Highly-Orangized world (already-wisdomed world), I have a body already but I've never been installed a sprit or a soul. So I really need to learn from you, from the great debian bbs, learn something of vital importance to take me into wise and freedom.

Debian Hardware :: System Can't Detect Other Graphics Card

Jun 12, 2011

I have two graphics cards in my computer. One is a crappy built-in nVidia GeForce 6150 SE, and the other is a high-end (as of 2008) GeForce in the 8000 range. I would like to use the latter, but I can't get anything to detect it. Testing which is in operation is easy: they have separate video outputs. I've tried changing the BIOS settings, but to no avail. I'm stumped. Could it be that my other card is dead? How could I test it? I'm fairly certain that it worked back when I used Windows, as I remember having to use my DVI-to-VGA converter (the other card's outputs are all DVI).

Debian Installation :: Can't Get Pci Express Ethernet Card To Work

I have an HP Pavillion Elite HPE computer I just got for a server. It has an internal gigabyte on the mother board and I put in one pci express trendnet teg-ectx eternet card in before installing. It is using the realtek 8169 chip. I had the local network on this card and the pubic static ip on the built in ethernet port eth0. After the intstall of debian 5.07 32 bit I couldn't get the eth0 pubic access to work. I can't get into the server with sftp or ssh and openssh has been installed and I can get into it locally on the local network.

I then installed a second ethernet card the same as the local network card. Now the pubic is on the which is eth1 and the local is eth2. I can ping out to [URL] but I can't get into the server on the eth1 using ssh and I have a iptables firewall and I turned it off and I stll can't get in. I am thinking that the eth1 card I added after the install doesn't have the driver or something. nothing is hooked up to eth0 right now.

Debian Configuration :: How To Install Another Ethernet Driver

Jun 21, 2011

I've got a Dell Optiplex Desktop here, the CPU is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz. The integrated ethernet here is from intel also, it's a 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection. This computer is running a Debian Squeeze 64bits, distrib sid, kernel 2.6.39-2-amd64.Well, here goes the story. I had a lot of trouble with the ethernet card, being very slow, and it just didn't work when i was using tftp. So I downloaded and compiled the latest driver available on Intel website. Currently with debian sid, the version for the driver ( e1000e ) is version: 1.3.10-k2. From Intel I got the version 1.3.17-NAPI.Alright, so I build it, and move the module manually to the right place, replacing the previous version at the same time ie :

$ sudo cp e1000e.ko /lib/modules/2.6.39-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/e1000e/e1000e.ko

However, there is is still something bothering me. When I want to check, after rebooting, that I did it right, here is what happens :

$ sudo ethtool -i eth1
driver: e1000e
version: 1.3.10-k2

[code]...

So, which one should I trust ? Is there something I didn't do properly when installing the module ? Or maybe I just don't understand ethtool and modinfo enough.

Debian Configuration :: Using Tor In Squeeze?

Aug 28, 2011

When I activate Tor in Iceweasel, it forbids me access to the internet completely. Even attempting Google results in "Iceweasel is configured to use proxy server that is refusing connection".

I have seen this in Lenny, too - it was caused by activating Tor without having installed privoxy. I installed privoxy and everything was okay. In Squeeze, Tor is using polipo. Polipo is installed and running. I have not played with settings of polipo or Tor, the configuration is the same as it was after installation.

What can be wrong? I am a rather an user than a networking guru. I am connected to internet by means of DHCP, no local lans, no special routings, no additional proxies. I have already tired to reinstall polipo.
