Debian Configuration :: No Network Access In Gnome

Apr 5, 2011

I've installed Debian on a Sun Ultra 450 Enterprise system using the net install version, so I know that my network is working correctly. However, now that Debian is installed and I bring up Gnome, I have no network access. I've set eth0 to DHCP, and have pointed it to my DNS server, but it never gets any information from the DNS server.

I've looked through /etc/network/interfaces, which looks like this:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
/etc/resolv.conf contains:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
which is correct.

I've run
/etc/init.d/networking stop
/etc/init.d/networking start

So far, nothing works. Why would the Debian network install disk work, but not be smart enough to set my network correctly from the start once I'm actually running Linux? Also, how do I get the network running in Gnome?

Debian Configuration :: Network - Access Servers Request Failed

Feb 1, 2010

I recently installed two PC with debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26). One is called serveur-debian1 and the second one serveur-debian2. I have installed gnome, samba, mysql5, apache2, php5, and Virtualbox,bridge-tools on them. On serveur-debian2, i installed an other virtual debian lenny with apache2,mysql5,php5,nagios and centreon on it to view my network. I remember having installed a soft to access nntp on serveur-debian2 in order to test nagios.

Since a few days, i have problem to access to my servers. rom my windows 7 client, i try to ping serveur-debian1. Response is OK but not for all resquets Always from the same computer, i try to ping serveur-debian2. Response is OK but not for all again.

When i launch a ping on serveur-debian1 and serveur debian2 at the same time i have:

ping 1 to 10: serveur-debian1: response OK
serveur-debian2: no response
ping 11to 14: serveur-debian1: no response
serveur-debian2: response OK
ping 15 to 25: serveur-debian1: respone OK
serveur-debian2: @ip serveur-debian1 network unreachable (there's no error, it shows me the ip of serveur-debian1)

If i switch on the debian virtual server on the serveur-debian2, and i ping it at the same time, the response is OK for all resquests. The problem is very strange. I can't have a correct connection and when i launch a request from a software which access the mysql server, the requests failed ...

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Access System>Pereferences>Network Connections?

Mar 15, 2011

I just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)

I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)

It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?

Using Debian 6 on eeePC1000HEB with Ath9k (i think) wireless card. Net Interface: wlan0

You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.

OpenSUSE Network :: 11.2 802.3ad NIC Bonding?

Jun 9, 2010

I'm attempting to install a new OpenSUSE 11.2 system (64 bit) onto an Intel-based server. I'm having no success in bonding any of my network interfaces into a single 802.ad interface. I'm fairly certain the problem is not the switch as I'm using the same switch (Foundry FastIron SuperX) on which I have an older SLES10-based system that runs with 4 NIC ports bonded together in this fashion (as well as a number of W2K3 systems using SLA). I set up the older SLES10 box by editing /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-blah files at the command-line as bonding was not supported by YAST in that version.

Now I understood, perhaps incorrectly, that YAST in OpenSUSE 11.2 permits bonding. So I bowed to the inevitable and from the GUI ran Yast->Network Settings and worked through all the tabs. I faithfully set up all the NIC ports to be switched off for bonding use then added a new Bond0 interface to which slave NIC ports are bonded. Default gateway was set to point to my router via the new Bond0 interface. I ensure that the firewall was off and that the relevant interfaces all pointed to the Firewall Disabled zone. After setting up as required, I rebooted the system and ran a test ping to a few addresses on the network. No joy. I checked the routing table via ip route then netstat -nr and then route all on its own. The routing tables looked as expected each time.

Getting down to first principals I ran ifconfig and again everything looked fine. I checked via modprobe -l bonding just in case there was something fundamental missing. Nope. I assumed that YAST hadn't worked as advertised and jumped online to grep for more info. Firstly I see that the HOWTO is out of date (Bonded Interfaces With Optional VLAN - openSUSE). I also noted that the bonding module option mode no longer supports numbers but upon looking at my ifcfg-bond0 file it contained mode=802.3ad rather than mode=4 so that wasn't it.

On comparison with SLES10 I did notice that config files of the ifcfg-eth-id: XX-XX-XX-XX-XX type were no longer used in Open SUSE 11.2 with only ifcfg-ethX config files. I examined those and also noted that the _nm_name and UNIQUE options were also no longer used. No need for lspci (or the Hardware control panel) when setting up bonding? Example of ifcfg-bond0 file contents (edited for brevity):

CentOS 5 Networking :: Loosing Network After Few Hours?

Jul 31, 2010

I have a problem with network on centos, after i restart the server it works for few hours/couple days, and the network is dropped. - no errors in the log, only that "Network is unreachable" I do 'service network restart' comes back on- directadmin, dns, awbs- everything works good, but only for few hours(never longer then couple days), and then it is dropped again. I searched many forums, and on one them someone wrote that it is because that static IP was used on the same network by other machine. I had a different server running with that ip on my network before, but it was few weeks ago, and there is no other server connected to the network right now (I have one desktop connected with dynamic ip, and it has no problem), and i still have the same problem.

I was suggested to set a cron jobs to restart network every few hours- i thing that is not a solution. Does anyone have any idea what could be a problem? Anyone had similar problems? What could be the reasons for the network to be dropped after few hours? Here is latest 'dmesg' output after losing network:

OpenSUSE Network :: Wireless AP Configuration - Doesn't Have Internet Access

Aug 7, 2011

I'm trying to setup a wireless AP with my old asus eeepc, so it can act as a repeater to connect my android device on the other end of the apartment. I've already created the Wireless Access Point using hostapd. It took very little configuring, just changed from mode 'a' to 'g' and changed the channel from 60 to 1 and It was all set. Next I setup a dhcp server. Also simple enough using yast.

Up to this point, I was able to connect my android device to the newly created wireless network. However It doesn't have internet access. I guess I have to configure iptables for this, but I find it incredibly confusing! Here are a few specs to help with any examples: The laptop is connected to the internet through eth0 with IP 192.168.2.120 Hostapd is using wlan0, and I'm pretty sure it created mon.wlan0 So, to sum up, when I connect my android device to the network I can, for instance, see what ever pages apache is currently serving on the laptop, but can't access the internet.

Debian :: Keep Loosing Keyboard / Fix It?

It seems to happen when I use memory-intensive applications. Sometimes it happens if I'm browsing and I have several Iceweasel windows opened on pages displaying multimedia content. Now I am working on a big Open Office drawing (large file, lots of stuff on the page) and it has happened twice. No warnings, no error messages, the keyboard just suddenly becomes completely unresponsive. I reboot and it functions again. Until next time.

I've got an up-to-date stable Lenny on a Dell Vostro 1520 and no other OS. I've got some extra stuff from non-free repositories but AFAIK these deal with multimedia applications, not keyboard control.

Debian Configuration :: Network Not Work When Use 2 Network Cards

Oct 24, 2010

I'm planning to use Debian as the OS for a firewall machine, which will sit between my internet connection and the rest of my computers. Now my network is all wired, no wireless whatsoever. I'm using the onboard the motherboards cat5 socket which seems to be using the VIA rhine driver and I'm also using a 3com 100MBps card.

I can list the machine spec if you want but it's nothing special, an old Athlon 64 rig with 1gb ram and an OEM motherboard, it all seems to work ok apart from the internet doesn't' seem to work. Lenny seems to detect both cards ok and I even used the net install CD and it managed to download everything using the 3com card.

The strange thing is when I'm in Lenny, I can't seem to connect. I can ping google, but when I try and view a webpage, the browser just sits there with a while screen... Could it be that using 2 network cards is confusing Debian? Right now I've only got the modem hooked up the the 3com card, and nothing connected to the onboard network card.

The system does not even ask for a password and the result is the same if I log in as a normal user.

I have installed from a single ISO DVD downloaded from the internet and read the DVDs of my previous Debian distro to install packages not included on DVD 1 of Debian 504 although I do not think this unusual approach can have any effect on the installation. I suspect I'll have to boot in single user mode but I have never done any troubleshooting at the command line.
