Debian Configuration :: Bind - Zone Configuration Error?

Debian Configuration :: Migration To Bind 9.10 In Wheezy 7.1

Nov 13, 2015

I want to migrate to bind 9.10 in debian wheezy. I don't want to take the source code from debian Sid since its an experimental version. So I have taken source code from official bind forum and compiled in debian wheezy. The compilation is successful but I am having problem in running the binary in debian wheezy. It's not honoring the binary even though I run it. I am not getting error messages on console but still it is not running.

I want to know whether its feasible to do this Or is it dependent on any other system libraries to make it run ?

Debian Configuration :: Bind A Port To Interface

Is is possible, via iptables or something similar, to bind a service running on a specific port to a specific interface? My case: I use a VPN service for privacy. I would like to have all traffic except ftp and ssh to run over tun0. Ports 21 and 22 will need to be accessible to the outside world (eth0) while the VPN is running.

Ubuntu :: ACPI Thermal Zone Configuration

Aug 31, 2010

I originally installed Kubuntu 7.10 on an ACER laptop (exact model escapes me at the moment) and subsequently upgraded to 9.10 and then to 10.04. Starting with 9.10, I had problems with the computer suddenly turning off in the middle of doing work. Eventually, I figured out that when this happened, the bottom panel had gotten quite warm so it probably a thermal control measure. Further, I discovered that I could prevent this by setting the power regulator to powersave, which effectively kept frequency scaling at 50% and under which I never had the computer suddenly turn, the only exceptions being when unplugged the computer and replugged it in and it would switch to dynamic power policy thus running at full power.

However, after "upgrading" to 10.04, I can't do anything to restrict frequency scaling. Whether I set the regulator to powersave, ondemand or anything, CPU frequency can go to full capacity until it heats the CPU to the critical trip point, invoking poweroff. Sometimes, this would happen just a few minutes after "acpi -t" reported 40C (is there some way to test the output from acpi, I've seen it report obviously wrong figures such as 0C when the room was considerably above freezing?). While trying to figure out what to do, I discovered the /proc/acpi/thermal directory and subsequently the /sys/dev/... directory.

I would like to know which directory I should focus on and what files in order to establish trip points and direct actions that will force the system to reduce heating so it won't reach critical. It's not like it's particularly compute intensive tasks triggering this. I have had it happen while running nothing more than the windowing system, system monitor, terminal and paging through a file with less. I have looked for documentation online but have not found anything that clearly explains what I need to do. The only parts I understand from what I've found are "[critical]: S5", "[active]", and "[passive]". The "[passive]" line included items like "tc=..." and "device=0x...", but I have no idea whatsoever what any of those settings do and the documents do absolutely nothing to explain them.

1) what file I need to edit, 2) what options I can set in the file, 3) what values those options can take and 4) what effects those values have on ACPI's behavior. Lastly, the default setting HAVE GOT TO BE CHANGED. Having poweroff as the first line of defense against overheating is simply UNACCEPTABLE. What would happen if this occurs during the middle of a system upgrade? I know at least enough to figure what needs to be done, even if I can't figure out how to do it. Many users can't even do that and I don't think they should have to. The installation process should automatically detect what methods of reducing thermal output available (reducing frequency scaling, throttling, fans) and set trip points that invoke them before reaching critical.

I notice that on the working box, it'd populate the output of the "hostname" command onto the "Authoritative Name Server" field. However, on the box that doesn't allow me to add new zones, it uses something like localhost.

Server :: Hostname Configuration On BIND

Jan 2, 2010

I have read a lot of documentation but it is still hard to find a proper answer to my doubts.About the hostnames in a domain, how is it associate to a determinated port?

For example, when I type on the browser webmail.sparc86.net and then I get redirected to the port of 20000 of this same domain. Fine, but how does it work that it knows it should be redirected to the port 20000? From where is this information (the association webmail-port 20000) taken? The apache will manage this, right? But what about other services like ftp?Another example, If I wrote my own software listening, let's say on the port 40000 and I want to have a domain like "mystuff.sparc86.net" how would I let it be redirected to the port 40000 ?

Debian Configuration :: ProFTPd Configuration - Use To Host MySQL Databases And A Few Websites

Nov 18, 2010

I am having no luck configuring ProFTPd on a Debian Lenny production server we use to host our MySQL databases and a few websites. I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".

It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

Debian Configuration :: Reboot Both The Server And The Client Machines Every Time Change The SAMBA Configuration?

Apr 5, 2010

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.

My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

Debian Configuration :: Fstab Configuration And Timeout - Automatically Continues Booting Even If The Hard Drives Are Not Attached?

Debian Configuration :: Exim4 Configuration For Local Addresses

Jun 17, 2010

I am working on a Debian 2.6.26-19 Distribution with exim4 as MTA. After a system restart a problem occurred with delivering emails to local addresses. These local addresses use a 1and1 mailserver for email. The MX records for the local domain are set correctly but exim does not use a DNS lookup for these addresses because it identifies them as local addresses. I figured this out by executing the exim4 -d -bt command. The dns lookup part of the result looks like this (I replaced the actual address with placeholders):

[Code]....

The eventual result of the exim4 -d -bt command is: [user]@[domain.ext] is undeliverable: Unrouteable address How can I make sure, that exim4 makes a DNS lookup for the local addresses instead of skipping it? I know that I have to edit a exim4 configuration file, but I could not figure out which and how.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze D-u - Kernel Configuration Skipped

Jul 6, 2010

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.

I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.

I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.

So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.

However, just in case someone else runs into this:

1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.

2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)
