General :: High Level Command Line Program For Burning CDs And DVDs?

Mar 12, 2010

I'm sick of screwing around trying to script a clean solution to burn multiple files and folders to CDs and DVDs with wodim, growisofs and genisoimage.I'm looking for a high level command line program that uses sensible defaults and takes arguments something like this:[program-name] [cd|dvd] /path/to/dir1/ /path/to/dir2/ /path/to/file ...It should then do all the low level copying and ISO generation transparently and just burn the damn disk!Does anyone have any suggestions? I've looked at several programs but it seems there are too many choices to trawl through and not enough information about them online.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can Watch - But Not Rip DVDs - CRC Errors

Oct 30, 2010

I recently purchased a netbook which does not have a DVD drive. I have attempted to rip a copy of some DVDs I own to facilitate watching them on the netbook. I have run into some errors.

First the setup:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
Linux ub-desktop 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:52:42 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
DVD Drive - HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-4166B

I have tried multiple DVDs (Heat, Team America, The Messenger, Holy Grail). All fail in the same way.

I can watch any of these DVDs from start to finish in VLC or mPlayer. No issues there.

For ripping I tried AcidRip, DVD::RIP, and even fired up a virtual box of Windows to try different applications.

The error log shows:

Code:

In Acid rip I will get about 130MB (40 minutes) of the video until these errors come up. There are usually three or four duplicates of that and then the application closes.

If I try to copy the files to my hard drive from the mounted DVD it will stall about 30% of the way through and lock the system up.

I know the errors indicate CRC, but I would assume if the drive was bad I couldn't watch the videos.

OpenSUSE Install :: When Verifying A Disk After Burning Suse On It It Keeps Giving Errors

Nov 20, 2009

I've been trying to burn Suse 11.2 to a DVD now for a couple of days but I keep running into trouble. When verifying a disk after burning Suse on it it keeps giving me errors. I've tried Nero and ImgBurn, different burners, different ISOs, different burning speeds (downloaded via torrent and http) but it keeps giving me the verification error.

The only thing I haven't tried is a different brand of DVDs but until now I've never had any problems with this brand.

Debian Multimedia :: Burning Sound File Onto CD

Oct 19, 2015

I run Debian 7.9, kernel 2.6.32-5-686. I have wodim, k3b and brasero installed on my system. I have a file called sound.wav on disk, which I want to burn onto a CD so it can be played on any regular music CD player. Brasero and k3b won't let me do that - I get error messages and the CD does not get written. I used to do it with cdrecord years ago, but as you probably know cdrecord is pretty much out of the game these days; I have wodim installed instead. but I don't know how to do it with wodim.

Code: Select allluiz@debian-luiz-computer:~$ cat /etc/debian_version
7.9
luiz@debian-luiz-computer:~$ uname -r

Software :: Back End Of Growisofs (burning) Using Debian 5.0.4

May 7, 2010

I use growisofs to burn image or data files into DVDs. In its manpage it refered that it's a combined genisoimage frontend/DVD recording program. while in genisoimage's manpage

Note that genisoimage is not designed to communicate with the writer directly. Most writers have proprietary command sets which vary from one manufacturer to another, and you need a specialized tool to actually burn the disc. wodim is one such tool. The latest version of wodim is available from [URL]

So,genisoimage still is a front end program. so when my using growisfo to burn something, which bin was used to actually do the burning job? wodim? I am using debian 5.0.4

Debian :: Installing - CD Vs DVDs

Jan 15, 2010

At the Debian download web page, there are many choices for an installation CD. There also is a 4 DVD set. I presume the CD is to get a base system installed. I presume the 4 DVD set is the whole ball of wax.

Yet presumptions are not always a good thing. So I would appreciate an explanation about the difference between the two options or just point my nose to the appropriate link. I browsed the Debian online docs, but I did not find an explanation. I am getting older too, so perhaps I saw the explanation and clicked right on by.

Debian Multimedia :: Encrypted DVDs Are Not Recognized Upon Insertion

Jun 21, 2015

I have Debian Jessie installed. When I insert a non-encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, a pop-up menu appears asking me what I want to do (e.g. "Open with vlc media player, etc.).

When I insert an encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, no pop-up menu appears.

I am able to play the encrypted movie DVD in vlc, and libdvdcss2 is installed. So my question is not about playing the DVD but rather about the failure to automatically detect it.

This behaviour happens in Gnome, Mate, and XFCE. (KDE has a Plasma Device Notifier Widget that is able to detect the encrypted DVD).

My other computer with Debian Wheezy is able to automatically recognize the encrypted DVD.

Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after the insertion of the encrypted DVD:

Code: Select allJun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208964] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE

Jun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208986] Info fld=0x400

[Code] ....

Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after the insertion of the non-encrypted DVD:

Code: Select allJun 21 14:55:39 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2226.518955] UDF-fs: INFO Mounting volume 'Check Please', timestamp 2009/06/02 17:43 (1e5c)

Whan I run the mount command after inserting the non-encrypted DVD the following line appears in the output:

Code: Select all/dev/sr0 on /media/daniel/Check Please type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=77,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)

Granted, this issue is not a major problem as I can start vlc and play the DVD. However, it might be useful to some new users to Linux to have the pop-up menu appear. Additionally, it would be interesting to learn why it works in Debian Wheezy and not in Debian Jessie.

Debian :: Apt-get Updates Waste Time Requiring Re-scanning Dvds

Mar 6, 2011

I have the eight Debian dvds listed in my sources.list, along with security, nonfree, and multimedia repositories. It does this for all eight dvds, re-scanning them for the update. These dvds have already been scanned (from the apt-cdrom add command). New updates are NOT going to suddenly appear on these already scanned dvds, so this is a completely unnecessary endeavour. Is there a way to stop this?It didn't happen with Lenny, and I'd like to stop it with Squeeze.

Debian :: Contents Of Directory Gone After Accidentally Copying Symlin / Fix It?

Jan 17, 2011

While doing some tidying up, in the process of moving some directories off my temporary mint kde desktop, I lost the contents of an important data directory on my data partition. Just to try to explain a bit of background, I have been using mint kde4 as a stopgap measure until I got squeeze working again ( i have been having graphics problems) and had a symlink on the desktop to a /data directory on my data partition. As I just got squeeze working again, I was moving stuff that had accumulated on the mint desktop to a directory named /2010 in the /data directory on the data partition, but accidently copied/pasted the /data symlink along with the 3 other directories I had highlighted. So effectively, I was accidentally copying the /data symlink to /data/2010. For reasons I don't understand, the whole of the contents of the /data directory disappeared, and it is now totally empty. I thought, that cannot happen can it? So I opened gparted and sure enough, that partition, which previously had about 70 gb of data in the /data directory was empty apart from /lost+found and an odd text file I had stored there. The /data directory is still there, but empty. I shut down Mint and booted into squeeze, thinking it must be a mistake, but gparted shows it has all gone. How on earth can this happen? I have some of the data backed up but a fair bit of the recent stuff isn't, so I need to recover it. I hoped the file system check that happened when I booted back into squeeze would maybe repair anything that got broke, but it showed as clean during boot.
