CentOS 5 :: Can't Get Kdump To Generate Dump Files?

Dec 7, 2010

I'm posting because I've read everything I can find on google and in the forum and the man page and still can't get it to work. I did read the FAQ, I hope I have adhered to it.I've tried several things and I don't remember exactly everything I tried and in what order.I've got several (12) HP ProLiant DL140 G3 servers running CentOS 5 that lockup about once a week. These are in a remote colo cage so I all i have access to is the built-in HP lights-out management interface, which includes a console, and ssh. I've been trying to get kdump setup to try to figure out what's going on. As an aside, if I run top on the console (via the management interface) the servers stay up for about a week, if I don't run top they crash within about 48 hours.I've used yum update to update to the latest available kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.x86_64) and installed the debuginfo and debuginfo-common RPMs from http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/x86_64/I have a single command in the /etc/kdump.conf file:ext3 /dev/sda5

CentOS 5 :: Rythmbox Not Reading Music Files?

Dec 25, 2010

The other day I got a SMC Network EZ-Stream Internet SMCWAA-G radio device and I am having some issue serving music to it from Linux.

It says it runs with MusicMatch or Rhaposdy on Windows. I want to run this from my Linux CentOS system.

So I was looking at Rythmbox which is on the OS already .

I have my mp3 and dvs on a Buffalo link station. I can mount the drive and see the music files OK at the browser level.

When I go into Rythmbox and select the files to be loaded into the library they appear to be grayed out.

Also I cannot select an entire older. I want to take everything in my mp3 dir that has my music broken out via artist and type etc.

Can this SW also be used to server out to my device like MusicMatch or Rhapsody? How do I configure the sw to be a server and run in the background?

I dont want to leave a windows system up on-line just for Music. I prefer Linux.

Is there other sw that might be better fro this function?

The device works fine on the network and gets Internet radio fine.

I just looked at the error file for Rythmbox and notice an error of

The GStreamer plugins to decode "MP3" files cannot be found

What is that? I tried a yum install gstreamer And I got the following : Setting up Install Process Package gstreamer-0.10.20-3.el5.i386 already installed and latest version Nothing to do

Ubuntu :: Digikam Crash On 10.04 Reading Database?

May 28, 2010

I can't get digikam to work at all on 10.04, it never pass from reading my pictures folder, usually stops in any folder and crashes after sometime.

Here's what shows at the terminal:

Quote:

The warning lines are repeated over and over again, so I just pasted the last ones. I've searched this forums and google about it but found no one with the exact similar issue. Can anyone help me out? Digikam always worked fine for my on my older installations. If I cancel the database reading, digikam will work as it should but obviously without all the photos on my folder.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: 5.5 Ext4 Related Server Crash?

Aug 13, 2010

I have installed 2 extra 1.5TB drives on a stable Centos 5.5 system. They are set up with 2 unequal partitions on each - with 2 raid 1 arrays. The largest of the raid arrays is used as a new volgeoup with 2 unequal LVMs. The larger of the LVMs is around 1.3TB. I installed an ext4 filesystem (default parameters) on the larger LVM.I went to mount the LVM - the system hung. No keyboard or network response and no response to the soft shutdown button. It was the deadest I have ever seen it - and this system has been incredibly stable.

In the absence of any other suspects - I am tempted to blame ext4 - since I have never used it before - and since wikapeadia tells me ext4 isn't supposed to be in the 2.6.8 kernels...:

[URL]

I will do some more testing on this tomorrow to try to confirm my suspicions. I will try to repeat the crash - then try mounting it as ext3 to see if it behaves differently. Any other tests I should do?What is the status of ext4 in RHEL5.5. Has it been added to the 2.6.18 kernel by RH? Is this what is meant by a "back port"?

CentOS 5 :: Server Crash - Restore Backup - Scsi ?

Apr 25, 2011

Client has a server running 5.5 (I think) and it they moved locations. This server is used in other locations (state) via ssh tunnel as well so they can all access files.

When attempting to boot up I get screenshot 1 (superblock errors)[url]

They supposedly have a backup on a hot swap scsi and I want to know how/if I can restore it using that backup if I cant fix the superblock boot/error issue.

I took some other screenshots:

CentOS 5 Server :: Gnome System Menu Causes Crash For Either X11vnc Or Freenx?

Jul 28, 2009

Sorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Hard Disk Crash / Data Recovery In RAID1 Webhosting Server

Feb 1, 2011

We have had a hardisk crash in our RAID1 webhosting server running CentOS5 and Plesk. We first realized something was wrong when our main site didn't load but showed MySQL errors. We then found out that the system was in read-only state. Something that also happened the day before yesterday, but we could fix with a FSCK. Then the system worked well til around 18 hours later when it crashed with the same sympoms. So, we rebooted the server and wanted to do a filesystem check again. But the HDD wouldnt even load. It was gone. Unfortunatelly it was not realized that the second disk in the system was also not working any more for some time now. Fortunatelly we had our main site backed up externally though. So we could re-install a fresh box and mounted the two drives to the system. We checked the harddisk. One is practically empty (the older one), the other has almost only files in 'lost + found' but these are all "numbered", no real filenames or so.

Programming :: Core Dump Issues. Program Crashes But Does Not Generate Core Dump File?

Oct 7, 2009

I want to generate core dump files from my program when it crashes. Its a pretty big process and has about 10-11 threads in it.I have followed the documentation to enable core dump by setting ulimit to unlimited etc. I quickly tried "A demo program creating a core dump" from the following webpage, which succeeds in Segfault and dumping a core file in the directory that I configured. However, I tried running my original program and caused it to crash. I did this by making calls to kill(), raise() or the same null pointer access as shown in the webpage above. In each case, my program crashed but did not generate a core dump file. Am I missing something? My program is in C++ and my environment is Redhat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20)

Going through the "Why do I NOT get a core dump?" section on the same webpage as above, I can see two potential problems. One - there are issues with the suid/sgid (bullet # 6). I am not able to change any settings with suid because my system does not contain either /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable or /proc/sys/kernel/suid_dumpableTwo, my program has threads in it and the bullet # 8 is the problem.

CentOS 5 :: Complete Software Listing For A RHEL5 Box (NOT An RPM / Package Dump)

Aug 31, 2010

I have a need for a complete software list off of an existing RHEL 5 system. I need this list to compare software installed to software on a government approved software list to ensure the compliance of this system. I was given an RPM Dump, listing all the 2000+ packages on the system... This does not translate to the Government Approved software list that I have to compare to. I do not have access to this system myself, so what ever method is prescribed for extracting the list I will have to pass along. What I need is either:

1) A way to convert an RPM Package dump to actual software names and versions, etc.

OR

2) A method to extract a complete list of software (titles/versions/etc) from an instance of RHEL5.

Example: Instead of knowing that "pango-devel-1.14.9-6.el5" exists on the system I need to know that "Pango v3.0.x" is installed on the system. Many packages do not relate on a one to one basis with a specific piece of software via inter-dependencies etc. (not to mention the version of the software, not the version of the package/library). The Pango example is not the best example as you can see what software is likely the source of this package; however just because this package is installed, I cannot grantee 100% that the Pango software suite is installed, just that this package was installed...

Server :: How To Create Kernel Dump On RHEL 4.7

Jan 11, 2011

My application team is asking me to generate the kernel-dump.

Here are details about my server.
OS: RHEL 4.7/32 Bit
Kernel Version: 2.6.9-89.0.23.ELsmp
Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5520@ 2.27GHz
Hardware: HP Proliant 380G6 series server.

I am using Electric Cloud applications. Sometimes it creates some kernel panic and immediately got rebooted. Kernel-debuginfo rpm is not installed. In some thread, I read the kernel-debuginfo rpm's version should match with the kernel version. In my case I couldn't even find the exact version of kernel-debuginfo version.

Server :: Disk Dump - Creating Virtual Directory

Apr 14, 2010

I'm quite new to linux, but I've managed to grasp some basics. Now my intention here to create a virtual directory, which I resorted to creating an Image File so that I can mount it and have my folder have a dedicated storage. I will mount this image as a loop device. Well it's not much of a problem, but I would like to know whether this is suitable. Say I want to create a 25GB Image.

Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/home/disk-img/25GB.ext3 bs=1G count=25

Is this recommended? I'm using block size as 1G which is really huge, so I was wondering, if this is actually recommended. From what I read, some said that it's only advisable to use 4096k or lower, but what I found was that these suggestions are very dated (year 2003), and it is now 2010, so I would like to know if it makes any big differences.

Server :: Create Core Dump When My Application Crashes?

Dec 29, 2010

I am using RHEL 4.7 (32bit) on HP Proliant 380G6 series server. We are using Electric Cloud Agents on these servers. Nowadays we are facing some memory issues and its creates some kernel panic and then restarts the server. When i reported the issue to my application team, they asked me to come with the core dump. I googled it enough, then i set ulimit value as unlimited. (previously it was 0, then i made a entry in /etc/profile file as follows
ulimit -c unlimited) But still whenever my server restarts due to that kernel panic, it couldnt generate the core dump. My application was installed on /opt

The attached document has the kernel panic logs

Server :: Dump All Users To The Same Sftp Starting Directory?

Jul 7, 2010

Using CentOS 5.5. I have a handful of users that I need to have connect to my server via sftp and start in the same directory. for example, user1, user2, user3, etc.. will connect via sftp and upon connection will all be in the /some/dir/path/ftp-root directory.I know one way is to create these users all with the same 'home' directory, since by default a user starts in their home directory when connecting via sftp, but before just doing that, I wanted to find out if that is really the appropriate method to use? alternatives? Is there some setting on the sftp server end that could direct all users to one starting directory so that these users don't have to have the same 'home' dir? I'm using the sshd daemon that comes with CentOS 5.5 (with all current updates/patches)

CentOS 5 Server :: NFS Performance With Files Not Yet Cached By The Server File System?

Feb 25, 2009

I have a weird performance issue with a centos 5 running a nfs server and a rh8 client. I think the fact that it is rh8 client should be downplayed. It is just that with rh8 client the performance degradation seems more clear. See test details below OS in server is Centos 5 x86_64 kernel 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5

1Gb connection between machines File to test over NFS is a 1GB file. First of all I wanted to measure how the network alone performs while using NFS. So in the server side I run a "cat" command on the 1GB file to /dev/null. Please note that the disk read speed is about 98MBs. At this point the file system has the 1GB file cached in memory. In the client side a "cat" on the same file gives me a speed of about 113MBs. It seems then that the bottleneck in this instance is the network and it is very close to nominal speed. So the network performance is really good. (BTW I know that the server got that file from cache because a vmstat or iostat shows no disk activity.)

The second test is reading from disk with no caching involve. In the server I flushed the 1GB file from the memory. For instance by reading another 5GB file and I repeat the same thing as above in the client (a cat on the 1GB file). Now, the server has to go to disk.(vmstat or iostat shows the disk activity). However the performance, now, is about 20MBs, I was expecting something closer so 90MBs. (since the reading speed in the server in the first test showed 98MBs).

This second test was repeated for ext2, ext3, xfs with no significant differences. A similar test using a RH8 NFS server and client gets me close to 60MBs for a 1GB file not cache by the file system in the serverSince network speeds and disk read speeds are not the bottlenecks ... what or where is the limiting factor then?

Nov 25, 2010

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5

I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]

So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error

I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(

Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions

Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:
