CentOS 5 Networking :: Machine Hangs / Never Brings Down Interface On Downing Wlan0

May 20, 2009

I have managed to configure a wireles PCI card on CentOS 5.3 and it seems to work fine. It is a off brand (Hercules) with a Ralink RT61 chipset. I installed the most current driver (RT2501PCI/mPCI/CB(RT61:RT2561/RT2561S/RT2661) from the rt2x00 Open Source Project. I now have a question that might be very simple for one or more of you to answer. When I issue the command "shutdown -h now", the machine starts to come down and brings down eth0 cleanly, but when it attempts to bring down wlan0, the machine hangs and never brings down the interface OR powers off the box. The only way to complete the power off is to "hard" power off the machine.

Fedora Networking :: Bring Up Wi-fi PCI Card (ifup Wlan0 Or Ifconfig Wlan0 Up) Whole PC Just Hangs Until Power It Off

May 20, 2009

When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.

I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.

I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.

Firstly, I can see the PCI card and the driver it is using :

Code:
[J@gx260-f10 ~]$ lspci -k
...
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)

[Code]....

the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.

I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

Networking :: Ping Hangs When Specifying Interface Option

Feb 10, 2009

I am working on a project that needs to know that an interface is up and has stable connectivity so I am told by higher ups that I am going to use ping to solve this. So I was writing something much like the ping program to send out ping packets to [URL]. The issue comes in the fact that I need to do this for every interface that is currently up. So I mimic the code from iputils version of ping to tie the socket to an interface and everything works well except I don't get any packets returned to me.

So digging further I opened wireshark and indeed my interface is getting the ICMP echo response packets but linux (ubuntu 8.10) isn't passing the packet up. So I tried running "sudo ping -I ppp0 www.google.com" and the exact same behavior happens here too. (also seen but not solved here: [URL]. Also my iptables in empty and I also have a wifi connection which is my default gateway in addition to the 3G ppp0 connection. It is not a routing issues cause when I collect packet on the given interface I see the packets that should be there.

The entry in the routing table for ppp0 is: (dst)68.28.xx.yy (gateway)0.0.0.0 (genmask)255.255.255.255 (flags)UH (metric)0 (ref)0 (use)0 (Iface)ppp0

So I was wondering if anyone would either A) be willing to spend a minute to check and see if they are able to ping with the -I option and if so let me know if their routing has entries for that interface (route -n) or B) if anyone has any ideas on why the system isn't passing the packet up to the socket?

Server :: Running Cobbler On CentOS Machine Hangs?

Nov 16, 2010

Using the EPEL Repository, I went in and installed Cobbler to my DHCP/Gateway box.Everything went smoothly on the installation front. I went ahead and modified the cobbler settings file (/etc/cobbler/settings) to point to my server IP (same box), and then got tftp running properly. Now here's the problem.Normally, you need to run `cobbler check` to find issues and correct them. I run that, and all I get is blank. Nothing. It just hangs at the prompt until I kill it using CTRL+C.When I CTRL+C from the hanging, it states "cobblerd does not appear to be running/accessible"...

Code:
[root@PalaceRedirect ~]# service cobblerd status

Ubuntu :: Wireless Card Won't Stay Connected - Iwconfig Says Wlan0 Is Interface

Jun 11, 2010

having trouble with my asus 1000 rt2860 wireless n card and WPA/PSK/WPA2 connections. Funky thing is it worked in the 2.26.32-21 kernel (iwconfig shows ra0 as the wireless interface), but when the kernel was updated and pushed through in the ubuntu updates to 2.26.32-22 the wireless card won't stay connected and iwconfig says wlan0 is the interface. I checked the proprietary drivers and they said that the driver for my card was active, but not in use. How do I use the ra0 instead of wlan0?

how do i use the driver that's listed as not being used? I'm having to boot up lucid with the older kernel now, it's annoying, lots of programs aren't running as expected as a result. I've tried manually installing the driver from the RaLink website as detailed in many other posts concerning this wireless card. It seems to work for some people, but not with me.

Networking :: Can't Ping CentOS 5.3 Machine To XP SP2 Windows Machine

Oct 31, 2009

I have two machines, one has XP service pack2, second one has CentOS 5.3 (Linux), they are connected through crossover cable. I have configured everything fine but don't know why till now can't ping!

A. Windows machine settings as follows:

IP Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gatway: 192.168.1.1
+ Firewall is turned OFF.

B. For Linux machine, I will list everything stored in network files, logged as [root@localhost ~]# :

1. /etc/sysconfig/network:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 eth0
NETWORKING = yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain

2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

DEVICE="eth0"
IPADDR="192.168.1.4"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"
ONBOOT="yes"
BOOTPROTO="yes"

3. /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 192.168.1.4
search locadomain

4. I restarted network service using this command:

/etc/init.d/network start

everything is fine. When checking using ifconfig command. I get the following:

eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:08:0D:EE:19:66
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr:........

[code]....

I mean I assigned the IP: 192.168.1.4 to Linux machine (Eth0). I did everything above and can't ping till now, when pinging from windows or Linux I get a message "destination host unreachable" restarted Linux many times but same result. NETWORK CABLE is working fine I tested it.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Error "SET Failed On Device Wlan0 ; Operation Not Supported' When Configuring D-Link Wlan Card

Nov 15, 2009

I have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. Determining IP information for wlan0.

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Route Add With Specific Interface?

Apr 19, 2009

I have an Asterisk-server with 2 interfaces, a WAN-interface (eth1) and a LAN-interface (eth0).

SETUP :

IAX-provider(internet) --> firewall --> Asterisk-server --> switch --> clients_on_LAN

So everything coming from the IAX-provider on port 4569 is forwarded to the Asterisk-server's WAN-interface (eth1).
This needs then be routed to an internal SIP-phone (an IVR-system will define which one) via eth0.

When a call is initiated from an internal SIP-phone (they register to the IP-address assigned to eth0) it needs to be routed via eth1 to the gateway (192.168.4.250). Asterisk will setup an IAX-channel on WAN-interface (eth1) to the IAX-provider (via gateway).

So... will this work :

route add -net ip_IAXprovider netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.4.250 dev eth1

CentOS 5 Networking :: Shutting Down Interface On Link Down State?

May 17, 2011

I have a problem. I want interface to shut down once there is a link down state detected. If you set up eth0, and then plug cable out, eth0 stays up, just loosing the RUNNING flag. I want it to go down completely.

I've stumbled upon netplugd, and I've tried using it. It is a daemon that detects states in (link up) and out (link down) from kernel netlink interface. If I have this daemon up, it detects that link is down (eg. cable removed from interface), and it runs correctly /etc/netplug.d/netplug eth0 out. That script then runs ifdown eth0. And that's ok.

But very next moment netplugd runs /etc/netplug.d/netplug eth0 probe, and probe section of that script runs "ip link set eth0 up", which then turns interface back on!I've tried commenting out that line, but then new problem occurs - after the link is up, netplug cannot figure that out and bring back interface. Has anyone have this kind of problem, and any viable solution with netplug?
