CentOS 5 Networking :: No Internet Connection In Text-based Environment
Jul 5, 2011
I installed CentOS 5.6 (kernel: 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5) with X Window on my HP Compaq 6710b. I also downloaded the firmware iwl3945 for my Intel Pro Wireless 3945 and manually installed it, reloaded the iwl3945 module and enabled NetworkManager. I could then get the wireless network connection worked on my graphical environment. I installed additional software manually by using the terminal window (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and everything worked perfectly.
However, when I switched to text-based environment by issuing the commend "sudo init 3" (changing the user level) and logging in as root, I could not get any internet connection. I tried to use lynx and I got the error message: "Unable to connect to remote host". I am a complete newbie in Linux and I tried to google and search for solution within centos.org but I could not find.
I have a question regarding to the Graphical Splash Screen. Is their a way to show the text based startup on booting your OS? So. I don't the OpenSuse Background with the loading line. But i want the half transparent black background if possible or just the black background with all the loading texts. The black and white screen.
i am a fresher to linux. presently i am using CentOS for getting some experience in that. but i have a problem with internet connection using in CentOS. i am using prolink USB ADSL2+ modem (H5200U). so, i request from all readers to give alternative answer.
I have installed Centos 5 on my laptop. And I have installed Oracle databases and also VMWARE server 2 software on it.But I see no page opens in firefox browser on this laptop.I can't understand why.The laptop doesn't have internet connection. But the VMWare web access page where we can login to console and create virtual machines doesn't require internet access.I am a newbie to linux and also network issues. How to figure out what is the problem? Are there any step by step guide to investigate this issue? All the pages I open get stuck with "waiting for abc.com" etc.It never opens.Javascript is enabled for this browser.
I have installed centos 5.5 / 64. Configured network but - no internet. On my router I see my pc and IP. On centos, Firewall and selinux are disabled. I try to disable network and activate network manager and reverse but no luck internet is not working. Try to ping my router 192.168.5.1
I am fairly new on CentOS and am in the process of setting up a small home office network that shares Internet access through the Linux (CentOS) box.I have two network interface cards The Linux box is also the DHCP server. My challenge is to get the client machines to access the Internet! I have a PPP connection to the ISP. Essentially I followed these Instructions CENTOS REDHAT Internet Connection Sharing. Pretty straight forward but I am still not able to get clients to access the Internet. I defined the DNS server through DHCP (196.44.x.y). I assumed it has to do with default gateway and it is set as follows: on the Linx box the gateway is my ppp0 link. DHCP uses eth1 (LAN card) fixed IP as the gateway. All clients are reflecting this information. The firewall (iptables) is reflecting the FORWARDING and POSTROUTING rules as advised.
Is there a step I mioght have missed to get this working? I tried to Google but its not getting me far.
I am setting up a Beowulf Cluster using CentOS 5.5. I have the head node with two NIC devices eth0 and eth1. eth0 is the one that is connected to the WAN while eth1 provides the internal LAN connection. I am trying to configure internet connection sharing with the slave nodes on the network so that I can update/install software as needed via ssh sessions using yum. I have set up the master node with the requisite changes to iptables to enable IPv4 forwarding. From my slave nodes I can ping ip address from the terminal, but my domain name resolution is not working. i.e. if I ping [URL] it can not resolve, but if I ping 74.125.224.50 (one of google's IP's) I can communicate with the machine without a problem. I also ran the configuration tool provided in the README section of the forum on the slave node and the master node. The links are:
I'd like to learn more about the VoIP protocol SIP. I read that Wireshark can be configured to filter stuff so that only SIP packets are shown, but the SIP server runs on a server with no GUI. Does someone know of a text-based packet sniffer that supports SIP?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10, and I would like to use my computer to share the internet connection from an ethernet port. For example, I would like to set up my computer as a wireless access point so I can create a network that other computers can connect to for internet.
I want to create a text based adventure game that interfaces over gmail. I'm in the process of writing a java program that will take text input, and return text output. But before I can do that, I need to find a way to use something like nail, mailx, or if absolutely necessary evolution, to import emails from gmail and pipe them into this java program. I want to do all of this independent of a GUI, so any solutions that use mailx or nail.
I want to explicitly commit bandwidth to only 3 VOIP connections, where a connection is defined as a source IP address, destination IP address, and a traffic class. I would like the traffic controller to put the first 3 VOIP connections into 3 different queues that would have equal priorities that are higher than Best Effort. If a 4th VOIP connection were to start, its packets would be put into the Best Effort queue. When one of the VOIP connections ends, I would like the incoming packets of a VOIP connection that is in the Best Effort queue (assuming there is one) to now start going into the free VOIP queue. Is it possible to do this? Can traffic control keep track of connections being created and deleted like that? If so, how is it done? I would like to avoid having to be constantly updating my filters whenever a connection starts/ends. In actuality, I would want to do this for several different classes.
I am unable to make my VPN connection to my university work correctly. Before, it would work some of the time without changing any settings. Now it never works. Unfortunately my institution does not provide support to linux users (outrageous!) so I'm on my own. Here is a link to the configuration instructions for windows and mac users, I've tried to configure mine based on this information but I have not been able to do it.
Is there any way to setup the Centos Directory Server without an internet connection?? i tried using the command: yum install centos-ds
but this just tries to connect to the internet to to download the packages. Is there a site where i can find the package so that i can copy it to my server and install it or is there some other way to do this?
Its a case of ".... wireless network connection active but still not internet connection .."I am using WEP - 128 key ... Works when I connect directly using ethernet cable ... but not wireless (pci and wireless router)
I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.
I have a CentOS server in one of my labs at work that does not have an Internet connection. Is there anyway that I can download the updates on a USB stick and then update the server? If so, what are the procedures?
I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.
I seem to have is trying to get the internet to work. I can go to ..... ect but when I try to run playonlinux it says you do not seem to be connected to the internet, please post if you have anything useful, as I said I am very new to linux so be as detailed as possible.
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces 34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
cat file2.txt
2 this is sentence1file2 6 this is sentence2file2 54 this is sentence3file2
I would like to join these 2 files. The result should look as follows :
cat joinedfile.txt
2 this is sentence1file2 6 this is sentence2file2 15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces 34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces 54 this is sentence3file2
==> so the joined file must be sorted on the first number. Any ideas how this can be achieved ?
I often need to change a small part of long environment variable (especially, e.g., paths), and do it either by pasting the thing into an editor and changing it there, or the equivalent.
Is there some small convenience utility to edit environment variables with a cursor on the command line?
I suppose I could always whip one up, but am hoping there's already something that I'm just not aware of.
I have installed Centos 5.5 on my PC and now since I am new to Linux environment I do not know how to set up Internet connection for it. Application is a Windows based & using Windows 2003 as the Server.. Would like to give a Dynamic IP to the Windows Server via 1st Ethernet Card & enable the 2nd Ethernet for the Internet..Eg : eth 0 = 192.168.1.1eth 1 = x.x.x.x (Public IP)I have check with few of my friends who told me to get Linux or Cent OS installed to do a interface disable after given time & enable a secondary device or virtual interface the next couple of seconds... Like eg : eth 1 = x.x.x.1 eth 2 = x.x.x.2 eth 3 = x.x.x.3 so on.. Would like the eth 1 to be down after 60 mins & eth 2 o be up & again after 60 mins of up time eth 2 down & eth 3 up.
