Is there any additional configuration in order to make the network stable.

Networking :: Make A Network Interfaces Configuration Immutable?

Mar 24, 2011

Similar to the linux command "chattr +i filename", I would sure like to set my eth0 interface immutable. so once I assign the eth0 interface's IP and gateway, make it stay set until I say otherwise.

this way, I can run dhclient or Networkmanager on another interface without having to fret that it may alter this interface. is there something out there that can do this?

General :: CentOs 5.3 - Grub Configuration For Boot Order

Feb 11, 2010

I clone an drive with CentOs 5.3 from a drive connected to ATA0 device 0 of an ATA controller to an identical drive connected to the same ATA contoller ATA1 device 0. No matter what I do it boots from ATA1 device 0 and I need to be able to control which one it is booted from. When I have puppy linux on one drive and CentOs on the other drive I can control the boot thru the system BIOS either way no matter if puppy is in ATA 0 or 1. So its not a BIOS issue. It appears (to me) to be a grub configuration issue. Since the 2 drives are clones they both have VolGroup00. I think grub loads from the last VolGroup00 found.

Here is my grub.conf file:
# grub.conf generated by anaconda

Networking :: Network Configuration (1 NIC) For OSCAR 6.0.5 On CentOS 5.4?

Apr 16, 2010

I'm a Linux n00b (very fluent in Windows, though ) that is attempting to set up a (currently) 3-computer cluster. My server node is a Pentium 4, and my client nodes are a Pentium 4 and a Pentium 3 (whatever I have lying around ) I chose to use OSCAR for my clustering interface and CentOS 5 for my server node OS. Yay. I made it through the installation prerequisites, but when it came to configure the NIC, I got stuck.

I opened the /etc/hosts file, tinkered with it, but something inevitably got screwed up. I can still use the Internet, but it won't let me install OSCAR. Running a system-sanity check returns:

[root@SurgeonfishR ~]# system-sanity
Checking your system...
Success: ssh-check.pl
Success: tftpboot-check.pl
Success: selinux-check.pl

All I need to know is what the /etc/hosts file should look like for a CentOS 5.4 installation with 1 NIC that is not connected to a domain (only a LAN). It is connected to a router which in turn is connected to my home network (I don't know what to do about that). The hostname should be surgeonfishr and the IP address should be

I know this question is probably really stupid, but I've logged a total of about 10 hours time on Linux...ever. (And 35000 hours on Windows.)

How would I go about doing all of this without the assistance of GUI's? I want to be able to do all this with the ks.cfg and network config files.

Ubuntu Networking :: Drop From G To B In Order To Make Card More Sensitive?

Aug 23, 2010

I have a sh-tty B/G wireless card that does 500mw according to iwconfig. I also have a nice little panel antenna on this card that does 7dBi. This rig picks up a lot of signals and that is really great. However I am experiencing a problem. I am able to Internet browse on non-encrypted networks as long as the wireless manager shows a full four bars. However, if I try to connect to a three bar network, I will not be able to browse the Internet. I have a solid lower level 3 bars, I'm assigned an IP addy, but I get absolutely no throughput.

So, I think this has something to do with receiver sensitivity. In G mode, this card does a lousy -65ish or so at 54 meg. So what I'd like to do is drop to 5.5 or 11 meg B because at 5.5 meg or 11 meg B, the card does a much more acceptable 90+ sensitivity.Does anyone have the command string/app for this? I would like to force a card to operate in no better than 802.11B@5.5meg rather than having it auto select 802.11G@54meg.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup OpenVPN In Order To Connect Back To Home Network While Traveling For Secure Browsing?

Apr 3, 2010

I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.

As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?

To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.

Hardware :: Run System On Macs Without Any Additional Configuration Such As Boot?

Is it possible to run Linux on Macs without any additional configuration such as Boot Camp/etc?

I have a SATA storage device that has presents a GUI to the user in a simple Linux installation, and ideally it should be platform independent, i.e. boot up into the GUI in all platforms. I'm having mostly success on various PCs, however, it's not booting up in a Macbook Pro that I have. AFAIK the MBPs and all modern Mac systems use EFI rather than BIOS, could this be the problem?

Debian Configuration :: All Packages Stable Except Deluge?

I am trying to keep a stable system (after a date with the unstable version which broke everything ) but a package (namely deluge) is horribly out-of-date. It is better in the unstable packages.I read the official documentation with the preferences file, pinning and the rest of the apt zoo but after a few tests I am still there with my old deluge in my stable environment.(in reality I managed to upgrade deluge by swapping the sources.list file with one with only the unstable repositories -- but this is not a particularly clever approach)I would be very grateful if someone could give me the right content for the preferences file which would allow to keep the system at stable level, except for the deluge package which should be updated to the newest, bleeding edge version.

Debian Configuration :: Jessie (Stable) 8.4 Update Unknown Partition Table Message

Apr 17, 2016

I update Jessie "stable" 8.2 to 8.4 and now I get 5 minute interval kernel messages:

Apr 18 06:39:52 OraHost kernel: [131985.494726] sdc: unknown partition table
Apr 18 06:45:03 OraHost kernel: [132295.755942] sdc: unknown partition table

Apr 18 07:00:23 OraHost kernel: [133216.340555] sdc: unknown partition table

I believe this has something to do with an mdadm update which was included in the release. When I configured the array, I didn't partition the disk devices, so maybe that has something to do with it. I am thinking of rebuilding the array and partitioning prior to build, but a quick fix would be referable.

And also something appears to have happened to the raid device since the update.

Prior to update, the array was /dev/md0 - now it is /dev/md/0 which is a symbolic link back to /dev/md0.

mdadm --detail --scan now reports /dev/md/0 where previously it reported /dev/md0

I created a new RAID1 array on a fresh system and immediately after the create, these messages appear at 5 minute intervals.

CentOS 5 :: Gathering Additional Troubleshooting Information

One of our devices running CentOS 5--an 8e6 Technologies Enterprise Reporter network appliance--has started displaying the following three messages repeatedly, though not continuously.Best as I can tell, hard drive four may be experiencing sector errors.(The messages do differ slightly at times. For example, 16384 may instead read 49152 or 12285, and the two strings of colon-separated hexadecimal digits may also vary in content.)Other than these messages, the device seems to be running fine. Its internal diagnostics indicate no problems.I will, of course, call 8e6 Techonologies tech support. But, prior to that, I'd like to do some troubleshooting on my own. What other troubleshooting techniques may I employ to gather more information?
