Networking :: OpenVPN + Samba Wins (weird Ip Address Resolving)?

Mar 8, 2010

I have a CentOS 5.3 box running Samba and OpenVPN. I have the Samba server setup as a WINS server and OpenVPN pushes the WINS server to clients when they connect. Everything is working great except for one problem. When I connect to the VPN using a Windows machine at a remote location, I can ping all the host names of computers on the VPN network no problem at all. However, when I ping the host name of the OpenVPN server it resolves to 192.168.122.1. All my machines are on a 10.x subnet and I have no idea where this ip is coming from. I've checked the hosts file, lmhosts, etc. and can find no reference to this 192.168.122 subnet.

I think I recall seeing this 192.168.122.1 ip when I had installed the Virtualization group and it created a virtbr0 network bridge with that ip. I've since removed the Virtualization software and deleted that bridge.

Fedora Networking :: Resolving Host Names To IP Address ?

Jul 27, 2010

At work we run DHCP. hostnames have the format: computername.city.mycompany.com

I have a laptop runing Fedora 13 and a desktop I use for backups, etc. My laptop is named copernicus. Desktop is named galileo. If ping either hostname from itself I get back the localhost IP address. If I ping the fully resolved hostname it tells me unknown host. The desktop is exporting an NFS share I use for backing up work data. I need the laptop to be able to resolve host names to mount the share since we use DHCP. The desktop is dual boot and if it is booted into windows my laptop can resolve the hostname properly. What do I need to do in Fedora to get it to register a hostname with the DNS and/or DHCP server? Should the domain and the search path below both say the same thing?

Here is resolv.conf on the laptop (I am at home). The desktop looks the same, except for a different nameserver. Both computers can resolve other hostnames, just not each other.

Ubuntu :: Globered WINS Samba Server?

Aug 18, 2010

I have been using samba with WINS enabled for a few years now. I know all setting in my smb, conf were and still are fine. For some unknown reason my samba shares got wacked. I have no idea what cause it but I could not fix it. So I decided to take the plunge and install a smb client. I remember thinking, I'm going to regret this... After the install of system-config-samba It would not run, I saw a few forums talking about missing dependencies

Code: sudo aptitude install samba samba-common-bin system-config-samba smbfs smbclient After words my permissions got fixed. So I was quite happy. and Wins was working great with all shares set up correctly. Than after a reboot WINS was not working. So I tried to clear out the WINS data files and restart smbd, but now it wont create my WINS.dat file. I dont see anything in the logs that helps me here, any ideas?

Currently my shares are good, samba is working fine, but WINS will not works. From a windows box I get "There are no entries in the list." from a net view.

Server :: OpenVPN Range Address / When Change Static IP To Dynamic IP In Config File OpenVPN Didn't Work?

Feb 13, 2010

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.

Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.

Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.

I hope I explained my problem as well.

My configuration file:

# OpenVPN Server Configuration File
dev tun 0
ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2
cd /etc/openvpn
secret key_file

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

Fedora Servers :: Samba PDC / Wins Proxy To Allow Share Across Networks

Mar 23, 2011

My Fedora router has three nic's, one for the internet, one for lan and one for the wireless network, which uses hostapd. I have set up samba in order to enable windows file sharing from wireless lan to wired lan. Using the samba documentation I have enabled the wins server and wins proxy which should allow met to browse the shares across the networks, which theoretically should do the trick but it doesn't work as expected. I can see the pc's from the other network using windows neighbourhood, but as soon as I access one of them it fails saying that "network path could not be found" or something like this. Tried using windows 7, windows xp and linux for browsing but the result is the same. As firewall I have shorewall and the samba specific ports are enabled for both networks. How to setup samba for inter-network browsing?

I have attached the global config section from smb.conf file:
Code:
[global]
server string = Samba Server
interfaces = eth1, lo, wlan0
bind interfaces only = Yes
security = SHARE
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log

Networking :: Samba Client Shares Disconnect Over OpenVPN Connection

Jun 23, 2010

My network is barely functional. I'm running 2 linux servers connected by openvpn (tun) through routers on both sides. There are Windows clients (98 and XP) on both subnets. One server (ls3) acting as PDC for the domain. The Windows clients use the respective linux boxes as gateways. On the server side (ls3 which is both openvpn server and samba server), all the clients can read/write properly to shares on both sides. The problems are all on the client side. Share connections to the server side disconnect after a few moments.

Browsing on the client side windows machines is fine. I can see shares on the server side. Some server side files open and are readable, writable, other server side files will not open. Some samba logon scripts on the server side can be opened from the client side. Others open after a long wait to a blank file! Permissions on server side files are set to 777 for testing. If a file won't open or reads "blank", that doesn't change no matter how many times you try. A non-readable/writable file overwritten by a readable/writable one can be read and written to!

I can ping successfully from any client on either side to any other client by either ip address or workstation name. Firewalls on both side are set to forward tcp and udp traffic going to port 1194 to the respective gateway linux boxes. Iptables on both linux gateways are down for testing. I tried reversing the openvpn server/client roles with the same result; the same physical side of the network had the problem. On one of the windows 98 clients, I wiped out the networking configuration completely and rebuilt it from scratch. Same result.

One one of the windows xp clients, I tried to rejoin the domain. It went through successfully but the result was the same as above. The network was operating smoothly for several years until the client side dsl modem broke last week. It was replaced with a newer model and at the same time I migrated from a pptp connection to openvpn. How to resolve this, Is this something to do with openvpn? Is this a network hardware problem? Am I missing something in the port forwarding on the routers? My smb.conf files are ancient except I added interface tun0. I have never seen 2 files sitting next to each other in the same directory where one opens and the other doesn't!

I'm running Mandrake 9.2 on the client side and Mandriva 2008 on the server side. I have a Sonicwall firewall on the server side, a Westell 7500 on the client side. I note that during the modem install, the http port was opened to the linux box on the client side and the access log got huge over the weekend and I ran out of disk space until I closed it down and deleted the log. I tried a simple test while viewing /var/log/daemons/errors on the client side. From a windows workstation in the client subnet, I opened a dos window and tried to print a file located on the samba server on the openvpn server machine which I knew NOT to be problematic.

The file printed and there were no errors reported in the log. I repeated the test with a known problematic file. The file would not print. The errors log noted:
Authenticate/Decrypt packet error: packet HMAC authentication failed
I regenerated the static.key file on the server side and scp'd it to the client side and restarted both openvpn's. I checked for duplicate files named static.key on both sides. Same error.

General :: Resolving Symlinks Mounted Via Samba On Windows?

Feb 11, 2010

I have a samba mount in Windows, mounted from a local Linux devbox. The projects on this mount contain a lot of symlinked directories. They all work fine and look like normal directories to Windows. What I'd like to do is figure out for a given file what its real UNIX path is.The context is: in my editor I have a script that runs the Perforce open command, to which I pass the file location.p4.exe edit FILE_LOCATION

However, perforce will not understand this FILE_LOCATION, if on the Linux side part of the path is a symlink. It needs to know the real path. What I need is something along the lines of the Linux readlink command, which resolves symlinks in paths.

Slackware :: 13.37 UNC With SaMBa Hostaname From Win7 Box Not Resolving Via Broadcast

Jul 7, 2011

I have installed Slackware on MANY boxes over the years and SaMBa has always resolved hostnames via UNC (\slacksharename) on a local net, but I am now at a loss after trying this at home. A UNC to the share via IP (\192.168.1.123sharename) does work fine, but this is the 1st Slackware distro I have ever had problems with resolving a broadcasted UNC. Subnet is 255.255.255.0 w/ both machines plugged into a switch and they are "linked" fine and other versions of Slack worked fine... This is for a one-trick pony, SaMBa share only, but she is not doing tricks! My other Slack box 13.1.0 resolves a Windows 7 \hostnameshare request UNC fine on the same net. smb.conf (This is not the share I am going to use, but if once this works I can get a /dev/md mounted and shared with minor changes):

Networking :: Windows Cannot Find IP Address Of Samba Server

Jan 26, 2011

We are running samba on a Fedora release 8 (werewolf). The samba server is located on a dmz subnet off of my Cisco ASA 5510 firewall. From my inside network I have no problems connecting to the samba shares. However when someone uses a VPN connection they cannot connect to the samba share. VPN users are assigned an address from a pool which has no problems getting to the dmz based samba server. All ports required are open on both firewalls (Samba server and PC with VPN connection.) I consistently get an error saying Windows cannot find the ip address of the samba server. I have looked at the samba logs in varlogssamba and found a complete list of connection attempts listed by ip address. These addresses match the pool addresses that are being assigned by the firewall when someone tries to connect using the vpn.

Each entry has this:
lib/access.c:check_access(327)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
smdb/process.crocess_smb(1062)
connection denied from (ip address that is assigned by firewall)
I checked the smb.conf to make sure the subnet the pool addreses is listed in the global section. It is.

Software :: OpenVPN Address Pool - Know To Route

Aug 3, 2010

I have a question regarding OpenVPN. I have configured my own vpn server. It is in a private network 192.168.0.0. The ip addresses I am using for the vpn connection are in the 10.9.1.0 network but I want to connect my ovpn clinets to the 192.168.0.0 network. I read the manuals and I think the "push route" command will work for me, but I cannot understand fully the description of the command "push route".

# Push routes to the client to allow it to reach other private subnets behind the server.
# Remember that these private subnets will also need to know to route the OpenVPN client
# Address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) back to the OpenVPN server.
;push "route 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0"
;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0"

So the questions:
1. These private subnets behind the server are routed from my vpn server or from another router
2. How these private subnets "know to route" the open vpn address pool, is this a configuration of the router for this networks (192.168.0.0)or ?

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

ETH0 for macbook (192.168.2.2).I can share files no problems over the network. Between windows <-> server, macbook <-> server, windows <-> macbook. The problem i'm experiencing is that i can't seem to find either hostnames between windows and macbook. They connect to each other fine with the right ip addresses, but they can't seem to connect when using computer names.

On both the macbook and windows pc i can see the server and connect to it without using the ip adress. What can i do to make them see each other with their computer names? Is there anything i can install on the server and configure in order for it to work automatically? In osx you have a tab in the finder that says "shared" which shows the computers on the network and only my server pops up.The same in windows, i can only see the server but not the macbook. As said, it works perfectly fine if i use \192.168.2.2 (or smb://192.168.1.2 on the macbook) but i'd rather be able to connect via the computer names.Would also love if they could resolve automatically so when a friend connects to the network i'll see his computer name right from the start, without any re-configuration.
