i am installing Ubuntu version 9.10 in VMWare Work Station 7 but i can't get passed to 'Install Ubuntu'. I tried pressing enter but it still won't load.
Is there any key or command that i have to enter?
I purchased this computer the other day at a garage sale. The computer starts up and the logo/ubuntu pops up with the scrolling load bar beneath but thats all the farther it goes. The monitor will go blank and then just restart the process all over again. Any help would be much appreciated

I have been trying to install ubuntu for a few days. After I select install on the first screen using live it will switch over to the UBUNTU splash screen. I can hear the CD drive and that hard drive working for about 45 seconds to a minute then nothing. It will just sit there on the splash screen for as long as I let it. By let it i mean hours. I and installing it on a Toshiba laptop with 1.6 ghz centrino processor, 160 gb hard drive, and 2.5 gigs of ram.

He managed to convince me about installing it too. I was going through the installation for Ubunto 10.10 but can't get passed the "Who are you?" screen even though I try repeatedly. I filled in all the details but the "Forward" button won't highlight for me to move on. I was doing the installation without being online (mentioning that in case it makes any difference).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI hope I'm posting in the right forum for this (since Scientific Linux is based on RHEL)...I downloaded the Scientific Linux 5.4 "Boron" Install DVD's, and I can't get the DVD to boot. It gets to the point where it tries to initialize SMP (I have a Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor), and it just crashes and reboots my computer. I've tried disabling ACPI, APIC and APM using the noacpi, no apic, and apm=off options, one at a time, and all 3 at once (since the problem seems to be with APIC, because it fails to initialize on all 4 of the processor cores)...does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here, or how I can fix this? I really want to run Scientific Linux, but I can't since it crashes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Nvidia 275GTX and I installed the nvidia drivers via RPM fusion and blacklisted Nouveau as instructed by a guide online that I see matches the one on these forums. When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install openSUSE on a dell Latitude XT all day, and every time I tried to live boot, I got a blank screen. I finally decided to do a text install and I got it installed, but now I get the same result from booting off of the splash screen.
I can boot into text mode fine (still) but for whatever reason, it bombs as soon as I tell it to load the GUI. I have a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, and an ATI mobility chip (2000 series, maybe?) I had the same problem with Ubuntu, and since I like openSUSE just as well, I figured I'd try it because I at least could do a text install from my liveCD.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
I noticed my Firefox loading rather slow (took around 5 - 7 seconds to load and navigate pages, even google, and it would sometimes become unresponsive), I thought it may have been a addon problem, so I opened up a new Firefox profile with no addons but the browser crashed upon loading the certain page I was trying to view, and I figured I'd look into it later and use Chromium for a while (I'll be open, I was trying to watch an pron tube site, and when your, you know, you don't really feel like stopping to go technical and try to fix it or whatever), but Chromium said that the flash player wasn't installed. I thought it was kinda odd, but then again I didn't want to go technical and thought maybe since mozilla firefoxs engine loaded the flash, I'd use Mozilla Seamonkey which uses the same gecko engine. The flash wasn't working either on there.
I tried looking up to see if there was a 64bit deb package for flash, but they didn't have it, and I seen someone mention that doing the 'apt-get upgrade' upgrades it, so I did that, and it also said it installed some extra packages when doing it, but I figured it was just that getlibs grabbing the extra dependencies and went along with installing them (after all there shouldnt be much to lose since its from the repository, right?)
I restarted the computer to give the updates a chance to take effect (it didn't mention to restart, but I thought I'd go ahead and do it anyways to ensure it updated okay).
This is where the booting problem comes in: When my laptop restarted, the loading was going across very slowly (I have ubuntu studio installed through regular ubuntu, so it was showing the text filling up), normally it would just fill a little bit of the first "U" in "Ubuntu Studio" and then be done quickly, but now it goes slowly all the way, and when it fills "Ubuntu Studio", it stills stays there, it doesn't load on.

I have no clue what to do now, and I wanted to ask for help before I go trying myself editing the command line boot process.
Out of nowhere Ubuntu (intrepid, I believe) has stopped loading for me. When it attempts to load gdm the screen starts flashing at the splash screen and then eventually dumps me to the terminal. From there I can login without any problems but can not get the GUI to load.
When I run sudo gdm-binary it does the flashing splash screen again and then spits out the error message: WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found. Then a few warnings about longest graphic displayed 2.5xxx seconds
I tried running sudo dpkg-recondifigure gdm and relaunch gdm as above and it did the same thing.
I was not able to successfully connect to my wireless network through the terminal to try to update in the hopes of that fixing the problem. Perhaps someone can give me instructions on how? (I have tried but can not figure out how to initialize wlan0).
Or, is there something I can do from my installation CD?
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.

I'm trying to ssh my ubuntu laptop with my android phone. But with the app I have (connectbot) I don't seem to be able to pass any args to the command. I want to pass the -Y command to allow my phone access to the screen on my laptop so i can use my laptop (somewhat) from my phone. Can you change the args passed to the command while it is running?

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install F12 from the install DVD that I torrented but it's giving me a disk error when I try to install. The DVD loads but when I go to install, it crashes when loading initrd.img, saying:
isolinux: Disk error 10, AX = 4209, drive EF
Boot failed: press a key to retry...
The DVD iso does pass the SHA256 hash test, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm using Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 to write the DVDs, which it seems to do without any problems. The only thing I haven't ruled out is Roxio - is this the problem or is there something I'm missing? If it is the problem, any suggestions for a better free Windows DVD burning program I could use?
I have a probably kind of unusual problem - when a USB stick is connected to the PC and data is copied from/to that stick, I need to know how much data has been copied. The data itself if not interesting, just how many bytes. I unfortunately don't have access to the program that does the copying, and most of the data doesn't end up on any drive (it just gets read and discarded), so I can't simply check the size of a target directory or something like that. I have had a look at usbmon, but that seems to produce way too much data - the normal case would be around 10 gig of data being read, and I can't have that blown up by a factor of 10 and lying around on the hard drive

I have a script that i want to add some functionality to, but im new to python. Right now it runs command line as ./script https://server user passwd verbose , which returns alot of informtion. I would like it to be able to only return information for a particular function when a flag is passed. exp: ./script https://server user passwd verbose -m (for memory only)
Under the ClassesToCheck section are the different things that can be retrieved. I would like that when you run the script as ./script https://server user passwd verbose -m, it returns only the 'Memory' info. -c would be for 'CPU', etc... Also, i would like the OK at the end of the script to be the first line that is return in the output instead of the last.
The iptables has every rule set correctly, the users in the subnet works great, but I have the following issue.every user connect to a mysql running on the internet through the port 3306, the forward and masquerade do the job. Now I have a user in the outside, and he wants to connect to a mysql in a certain machine (Not the gateway), prerouting rules solve my problems, but all the packages from the inside users goes now to that certain machine. I would like something like if the package passed trough masquerade don't pass trough the prerouting rule, and if it come from the outside (Not a package that come from a petition from the inside) pass trough the prerouting rule.
View 6 Replies View RelatedLoad screen after install and bounce has been coming up in like 400X300 huge and pixelated and fugly. Is this happening still with your upgrades or fresh installs of the latest iso is this WAE? Is it just me? When I booted from iso (before perminant install) it looked fine....after install though it comes up uuuuuugly. Boot only takes a few seconds so I can live with it. Poor presentation though when showing it to someone outside of the nix community.
EDIT: The load screen was very pretty in Karmic for me .Lucid is dorked up though.
Now I'm trying to run Ubuntu again. The problem started when I put Ubuntu to sleep, but instead it turned the screen black and hung without going into sleep (this is common for me). I had to cut its power, but afterwards it wouldn't boot.
I tried booting off old kernel and "recovery" ones, but that gives me an error and loads "ash" shell, which doesn't let me browse any of my files (no /home director to speak of).
I'm really at a loss. Is my only option to delete everything and reinstall? If I back-up my home directory, can I just copy/paste the contents into it once I install a new Ubuntu and have things more or less in working order?
