Ubuntu :: Way To Grant 'root' Privileges To User Account?

Jan 2, 2010

Is there a way to grant 'root' privileges to my user account? My account name ... I'll call it 'masterskop' as it is my forum name here, but not on my computer.Would it look like this in the sudoers' file?My purpose is to get access to all the folders and files in the 'File System'. The root and lost+found folders have 'Xs' on them...No access! And for example, under properties of the 'var' folder it states that 'you are not the owner, so you cannot change these permissions.' How can I get access to all of it everytime I login as the main user of my computer? I do not have anyone else using this computer.I did edit this file and used my real user name ... logged out and logged back in and still I do not have access/edit these folders and files.

OpenSUSE Network :: Regular User And Http. Grant Correct Privileges?

Jul 30, 2010

I have a normal user (sites:users) and the usual http user (wwwrun:www).I'm hosting several sites and I want to be able to upload stuff via ftp, so I'm using the "sites" home (/home/sites) to keep the sites I'm hosting. Giving read permissions to all inside /home/sites makes it accessible and readable to the wwwrun user. Problems come when I need to upload something. The easy way is to give 777 permissions to the folder that's going to receive the file, but I don't feel comfortable at all with that.

What do you recommend? Is there any group configuration that could help me (like adding "sites" to the "www" group)? Or any other configuration at all that might be according the the best practices?

Debian :: Modify To Automatically Grant Root Privileges And Execute Commands When Starts?

Aug 22, 2010

I'm connected to the internet using a wireless router. Each time I boot, I have to grant root privileges and type in a shell: iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys key dhclient wlan0 Isn't there a file(or location) that I can modify to automatically grant root privileges and execute these commands when debian starts? Something like autoexec.bat in windows.

Something else I'd like to mention is when I execute iwconfig.... for the first time, I get this incomplete result:

IEEE 802.11bg  ESSID:"linksys"
Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=27 dBm

Ubuntu :: Completely Remove MySQL - Root User Loosing Privileges

Jul 20, 2010

I Installed the maintained package, Day one everything worked fine, I set a dummy database and work on it from VM windows. Day two weird errors, I searched around couldn't find the problem, the error was related to The root user losing privileges. I don't remember the exact error. So I decided to Completely remove the DB with apt-get remove mysql-Server-5.1. It gets stuck during the uninstall, I left the machine for a day and a half to uninstall mysql. I realized it was no use, I tried to Restart and try again, but I am getting the same thing.

Code:
finito@finito-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get remove mysql-server-5.1
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
dbconfig-common libhtml-template-perl mysql-server-core-5.1 libaprutil1-ldap
apache2-mpm-prefork apache2-utils libmcrypt4 apache2.2-common libt1-5
libaprutil1-dbd-sqlite3 apache2.2-bin wwwconfig-common php5-common
javascript-common libjs-mootools
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

The following packages will be removed:
mysql-server-5.1
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
After this operation, 15.7MB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? y
(Reading database ... 231901 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing mysql-server-5.1 ...
it stays stuck at Removing mysql-server-5.1 ...

I can't progress I am at the brink now, my only option right now is format, but I don't wanna do that. This setup is almost 5 years old and I have gone with many ups and downs with it. From Windows to 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 to now 10.04 each year loving the resilience of Ubuntu and the Linux architecture. I don't want to believe that this has killed my spree.

OpenSUSE Network :: Starting Apache As A User With Root Privileges?

Jul 17, 2010

I have written a simple perl program to add a command to iptables. Here is my code :

Code:
#! /usr/bin/perl
print "Content-type: text/html
";
system("iptables -A FORWARD -s 192.168.0.2 -j DROP");

I put this file in cgi-bin folder of Apache server. Here is my problem : when I run this file with shell as root user it makes change to iptables, but when I use my browser to run this file, it doesn't make any change. I'm sure this is because Apache doesn't have permission to manipulate iptables. How can I start Apache as a user with root privileges ?

Ubuntu Security :: Actions Requiring Root Privileges Asks For Wrong User ?

May 24, 2011

In our group we use NIS and have a group set up called netadmin which is given root privileges on each machine. Each machine also has a localuser called localuser created and used during installation. When logged in as a member of netadmin, attempting any action that requires root privileges (e.g. installing software in Ubuntu Software Center) results in a prompt asking for localuser's password, not the current user's password.

Does anyone know the cause? Configuration issue or Ubuntu issue? We can get around it.

Figured out a straight shot at connecting to the Internet in Fedora 15. Follow these commands.

1.)****** SWITCH TO ROOT USER if you don't have privileges*******
2.) cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
3.) rm ifcfg-XXXXX (DO NOT REMOVE THE IFCFG-LO)
4.) system-config-network

-> Once in this screen, press the enter key on "Device configuration"
-> Configure your network statically. ( I did the following.) Name: leave as default Device: Leave as default DESELECT "Use DHCP" Set Static IP as 192.168.2.117 (or 192.168.1.117) Set NetMask as 255.255.255.0 Set "Default Gateway IP" AND "Primary DNS Server" to 192.168.2.1 (or 192.168.1.1)

Ubuntu :: Root User Account Is All Messed Up?

Oct 8, 2010

A while back I don't know what I did but I messed up my root user account and now the password that I think is supposed to be for the account doesn't work anymore. In an attempt to fix it I rebooted and went into recovery mode and then edited the sudoers file. This appears to have been good enough to be me by but now I'm running into problems installing or changing configurations in gnome. For example, I just installed Asterisk via the terminal the other day and had no problems because I could use sudo. But just now I tried installing Gastman via the Ubuntu Software Center and of course it asked for the root password.I entered my usual root password when I use sudo and it doesn't work.

I then went to the terminal and entered sudo apt-get install gastman and it worked fine becuase I used my sudo password for my account. So it seems I can do things just fine via the terminal but when in gnome it doesn't work. I went into the Users and Groups section in Gnome to attempt to set or change the root password but of course I have to unlock the application which requires the root password.

Apr 17, 2011

My install of 11.4 has been running perfectly for for several weeks now. But- (always a but) today it started acting up. I cannot log in to any user account including Root after logging out. After a cold boot I can log in again anywhere but after logging out I have to reboot again then I can get back in to any account once. After logging out any attempted log in causes the splash screen to blank for a few seconds and then it comes back with the previous successful user name log in but typing in the password blanks the screen a few seconds again. Clicking on a user account also blanks the screen a few seconds and then it again comes back with the previous log in users name.

On a Fedora Core box, I have a normal non-privileged user and I also have sole access to the root account. Because I am the only administrator of this box, I frequently su over to root for administrative tasks. The problem is that many of the user configuration I've become accustomed to are only configured on my day-to-day account (.vimrc, .bashrc, .screenrc, etc). Other than giving my day-to-day user account privileges to perform administration tasks, how would I go about sharing configuration between these two accounts?
