Ubuntu :: Upgrade 8.04 Directly To 9.10?

Apr 26, 2010

Is it possible to upgrade 8.04 directly to 9.10 without 8.10 and 9.04 ?

All manuals said that i should pass all version, but I don't want, because it will take too long.

What is the best way? Just burn 9.10 and install it without thinking?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Directly From 9.04 To 10.04?

Sep 5, 2010

I did not upgrade my system when the 9.10 version was released but I'd like to do it now. The update manager gives me 9.10 as the only available option...this would mean I have to upgrade my system twice...is there any way to upgrade directly to 10.4 without passing through 9.10?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Directly From 10.04 To 11.04?

Jul 31, 2011

Update Manager lists the 'latest version" as 10.10, so I assume I should upgrade to that, download all the updates for 10.10, then upgrade to 11.04, or should I just do a clean install of the / partition? I have my HDD divided up" / /swap /home, and /home has three users. And if this question has been posted many times before - feel free to beat me up. I can take it

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Studio Lucid Directly To Studio Maverick?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.

[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

Ubuntu :: Boots Directly But Not In A VM?

Jun 29, 2011

This is probably more of a VMware problem than an Ubuntu problem, but I am hoping that perhaps someone else running Ubuntu has experienced this and/or has insight.I have a dual-boot system running Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (Both 64-bit).installed VMware Player in Windows 7 and created a virtual machine which should use the partition that Ubuntu is installed on. When I try to run the VM, the "bios" screen goes by and then I get an error message stating that "a virtual cpu has entered the shutdown state." I have tried changing the boot order to boot from cd-rom first and with the ubuntu cd in the drive, the vm will boot from cd and run. Note that I do run VMware Player as an administrator so that it should be allowed to access the hardware directly.

I have tried googling for this and searching VMware communities but pretty much all I find is relative to attempts to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard.Any help would be appreciated.(Note that I have a coworker who has done this successfully and we have compared notes and nothing is popping out as different from a basic configuration standpoint. We do however have different hardware as we are talking Dell Latitude Laptop (him) vs. Lenovo X201 Tablet (Me), both pretty new)

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Directly From An Iso?

Mar 9, 2010

I've used Ubuntu for a couple of years now, and it is by far my favorite operating system. Although, I am now reluctantly switching to Windows 7, due to lack of support for the Apple Airport Extreme.

My CD drives are incapable of recognizing the DVD that I burned of Windows 7.

My only other option now seems to be to boot directly from the Windows 7 iso that I have.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10.

I use startx to get to the desktop, but if i do that, after a short while, the screen will go black and then ubuntu will take me to the GUI log-in screen. I noticed that I'f I was using firefox I would have to go into system monitor to kill the process before I could restart the browser. I also noticed while doing this that most processes seem to be running twice.

Ubuntu Servers :: Streaming Directly From /www/video/foo.avi

Jan 4, 2010

I don't know why, but I can't seem to just play video files (stream them) directly through the internet using MPC or any other media player. It is a bit weird, because I think I was able to just a month ago. I have made some changes to the general setup of the apache server, but nothing major, and I have no chance of reversing it all.

Instead, when I try opening the url using "Open file" it doesn't just open it an begin playing from the internet, but instead appears to be frozen. However, If I let it be "frozen" long enough, it will eventually play the file, indicating that it has downloaded the entire file to a temp location on the hard drive.

Is it something with the permissions? Actually, I went and made everything in /var/www/ 777, as it is not known by a domain name or registered anywhere. I am just connecting though my IP address as the server is located locally. Even this didn't help.

Ubuntu :: Deletes XP Partition - Can't Boot Directly ?

Feb 28, 2010

I have deleted sda1, sda2 as they were XP partitions that I no longer wanted to use (yay!). After doing so, when I rebooted I just got a blinking cursor. I was able to boot with the Ubuntu 9.10 install CD, and found that I could elect to boot from the first hard drive, and in doing so the usual grub menu was displayed, and I could boot to my Ubuntu 9.10 partition (sda5 inside of sda3 extended partition). So, noobid that I am, I figured I would try to 'fix' grub. ran commands grub>root (hd0,4); grub> setup(hd0)

Now, when I reboot, it goes directly to the grub command line, no multiboot menu, and I cannot find a way to boot to my Ubuntu partition. The partition is still there, though, as I've checked from the Ubuntu CD.
