Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Old 9.04 To 10.04 With Live CD?
May 17, 2010I'd like to upgrade the Ubuntu 9.04 on a system to the 10.04 and I have the 10.04 LiveCD. Usually I would get a new HDD and install on that , then move stuff onto the new HDD, but I thought that this time i'd try some other method. I've done the online upgrade once but it took a long time, while connected, and it worried me.
Can I replace the 9.04 with 10.04 without losing anything (although perhaps requiring an Update Manager run to refresh some apps, Like OO, VLC, etc.)?

May 2, 2011I downloaded the 11.04 alternative.iso and burned it on my cd because u can now upgrade by using live cd. I want to upgrade my 10.10 to 11.04. The problem is there is no upgrade to 11.04 option in the text only installer. The only thing there is partionioning blah blah blah. Should i overwrite thr partition or fresh install 11.04?

May 23, 2010My first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.

Sep 8, 2010Does anyone have any experiences to share regarding this? Our server is still running Hardy and, of course, the time is rapidly approaching where I need to upgrade to the latest LTS. Now, I'm sure a complete re-installation would obviously be preferred, but I noticed that there's a release upgrade feature for Ubuntu server. Is this reliable enough to use on our production server without wrecking everything? I really don't want to have to go through the process of configuring software RAID and all our other services again.
Obviously I'll take normal precautions such as making tons of backups and starting the process on a weekend so if the proverbial poo hits the fan I can work over the weekend and have everything up and rolling by monday. This server is not exposed to the outside world as a webserver or anything like that so it can afford to be down over the weekend (although not preferable since we have financial cron jobs and such running in the wee hours of the morning).
Ubuntu Installation :: System Freezes After Upgrade - No Live USB Works
Feb 5, 2011I was running 10.04 with no problems. Upgraded. I may or may not have lost power before the upgrade was finished. Now my system locks out the keyboard and mouse on the login screen...nocapslock light or anything, but I know it's still running because the clock at the bottom increments once per minute. Booting safemode does not help, it simply hangs at some point on the scrolling black screen instead.I can boot 9.04, which is still installed on another partition, just fine.Is there any way I can boot to a terminal and try running apt-get again, to see if I can fix whatever's wrong?

Feb 21, 2011Yesterday my wife was using our laptop and an upgrade manager dialogue box came up. She clicked yes to install upgrades, but at some point during this process the machine froze. She restarted, and I haven't been able to successfully boot since then. the final screen when trying to boot from the hard drive reads:

I'm slowly getting the hang of Ubuntu. By now I know enough that a Live CD can fix most problems. So that's where I went after doing several searches about the error messages that were appearing. The menu screen works, but I can't get it to boot into the "Try ubuntu" mode. I tried changing the boot parameters to no avail. As the boot tries to load I can see a line by line report of errors- some are I/O errors and are in white, but many were in red, which seems bad from my mostly ignorant perspective. I saw lots of SQUASHFS errors among other things. I took a snapshot of the screen that was displayed when the boot failed- it's attached to this post (lots and lots of text to be typed otherwise). The reason I know it failed is because I've tried a half dozen times with the same exact result- once I let it sit for an hour+ just to make sure it was really frozen (a bit optimistic).
Relevant info: Ubuntu is running on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I think it's version 9, but could be 10. The Live CD I'm using is version 10 burned 1/4/2011. I'd be thrilled to hear any suggestions that folks might have.

Everything seems fine for the moment, apart from the fact that I can't seem to delete the LiveCD user, even when logged in as my own account. Even logging in to a terminal from my own log-in seems to result in a whoami output of linux (the liveCD user).

Jan 24, 2010When I ran the distribution upgrade from 9.04 in update manager, my screen went blank on reboot and will not recover. Every time I reboot, screen goes blank. I cannot press CTRL-ALT F1 - F6 to gain access to text shells.
I tested booting from the 9.04 live CD and it works fine. So I downloaded the 9.10 live cd on another computer and booted it on the disabled system. Same exact problem on the live CD that I had upon installation: on boot screen goes black and cannot access text shells.
What can I do next to get out of this short of going back to 9.04, which has problems that I do not want to live with?

Oct 21, 2010My ubuntu desktop died yesterday. I rebooted my computer in like 1 month and after grub, the screen is all black and it stays there... forever. So I decided to see if the problem persists or not when I completely upgrade my ubuntu to the latest version. So I downloaded the latest ubuntu iso from the site, burned it, and booted from CD and I see several selections to choose from the menu list. The second one was "Install Ubuntu". What I'm worried about is I don't know whether selecting 'Install Ubuntu' will erase all my previous data, or there will be an option to upgrade Ubuntu without erasing all the data. Is it safe to install from the live disk? Will my data be safe? Is there any way to upgrade my Ubuntu on the HD to the latest Ubuntu from a live disk?

His PC is more than capable of running ubuntu 32 bit BUT I've hit a brick wall I've never come across before. I've burnt a CD image of the 10.04 iso from [URL] on my ubuntu box and for some reason, his PC just won't boot from it. If I select the option to manually select the boot source, all I see is the hardware monitor telling me things like CPU temperature. As for the Live USB - nothing whatsoever. Is it possible that I've managed to corrupt the iso file somehow?

Apr 28, 2011Live CD: I dowloaded the ISO, burned it to CD, booted from this CD. It starts to load and I can see the purple background with the loading icons. Everything seems normal. But instead of ending up with the login screen, it ends up with a screen that says 'Please remove all bootup media and hit ENTER' or something like this. So I hit enter and then it shuts off my computer. That's it.
Live Stick: So I tried another option and created a stick with 'usb-creator.exe' that is on the CD. Then I start from that stick, but all I end up is a line of 'Syslinux bla bla copyright 20xx-2011'. That's it. Then it does nothing anymore. The cursor is blinking, but no prompt or whatsoever and keyboard input doesn't do anything.
Now something weird: When I insert Live CD and Live Stick at the same time and then boot my computer, then it boots into Ubuntu. Obviously it loads the first parts from CD and then the rest from stick. Because when I'm then in Ubuntu and try to format the stick, it says it can't do so, because there's system files from that stick in use.

Aug 22, 2010Just got back to attempting to play with 10.04 using its Live CD. It consistently goes to the "Log In" page and not the Live CD page on running. I saw a Post specifying a F key to be pressed on boot-up to get to the desired starting point some time ago, but did not write it down. Some advice did say press Any Key but this does not seem to do the job. Tried to use the search function here but no joy. Can anyone remember which F key? Note that as a check, I tried to use 9.10 Live CD and this worked fine, so it is not a machine problem.
