Software :: "Previous Installation Hasn't Been Completed"?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm a newbie, but will post this here since it mentions specific software programs. Obviously, if I'm posting to the wrong forum topic,Trying to view linked items in firefox (sometimes media, sometimes other things, sometimes just loading pages which i believe have embedded elements) results in an error which doesn't include links or suggestions or even a complete error code.I can't remember in which app, but not firefox, I was getting an error that included a file or app or utility which wasn't installed which began with gt or possibly gtk.Going to ubuntu software center and searching for "gtk..." or trying to install media playing software such as GnomePlayer, I get the following error:Previous Installation hasn't been completed. The installation could have failed because of an error in the corresponding software package or it was cancelled in an unfriendly way. You have to repair this before you can install or remove any further software.

As a newbie, this is meaningless to me without some kind of indication of what to do next. I get this error for basically every installable option in the software center that might fix the issue of not being able to view/subscribe/download media. (eg, Gnome Mplayer, DVD::rip, Avidemux gtk+, pulse audio device chooser, gftp, bluetooth manager, geany, miro, gtkpod... the list is seemingly infinite)

Ubuntu :: Installation Not Completed - Black Screen On Boot

Aug 30, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire One that runs Windows XP. I downloaded both the full Ubuntu (latest version but can't remember the number) and the Ubuntu for netbooks- each on a separate flash drive. I thought I had the netbook version in my Acer when I booted it up, but I saw it was booting the full Ubuntu version. Instead of allowing it to finish installing to run from the flash drive, I stupidly shut it down and removed the flash drive. Ever since then, when I try to boot my Acer, all I get is the black screen of death. I've tried the flashit.exe to flash the BIOS, but no luck. So, I'm guessing it's not a BIOS issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Saving Settings From A Previous Install?

May 24, 2010

Over the last two months I've been trying out Ubuntu 10.04 32bit using Wubi under my current Windows 7 32bit OS, and I'm at the point where I want to reformat and partition my HDD making Ubuntu my main OS (with a very small partition for Windows 7 on the side for certain things).I was just wondering if it is somehow possible to export all my current settings and preferences for my current installation of Ubuntu so that once I've reinstalled it, I can import them and everything will be the same as it is now (I hope that made sense...).I'm not too fussed about reinstalling apps and things, just all my current settings and preferences.Oh and also, (this might not be the place to ask, but I know you'll probably be able to answer this as well) is there anything I can use to do the same export/import process with my Windows 7

Installation :: Want To Preserve Settings From Previous Version Of Ubuntu

Apr 26, 2011

I am now using ubuntu 10.10. I am going to install ubuntu 11.04 on April 28 (after it is released). I want to preserve:
1) the list of extra programs installed by me on ubuntu 10.10 (I want to install the same programs in 11.04 also)
2) program settings

My questions:
1) From synaptic package manager menu:
File -> Save Markings (save full state, not only changes)
saves in a text file the list of programs installed on my system. I used that file to install the same programs in several computers running ubuntu 10.10. Is there a way to use that list in 11.04 also.

2) Copying the directory ~/.mozilla preserves all settings of firefox from previous installation. Like that what files should be copied for gnome applications (gnome-panel, nautilus, etc.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Previous Linux Version Boot

May 14, 2011

I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. on boot up I sometimes get only the purple screen freeze and sometimes I actually get to the grub menu. I select the generic kernel and get the black screen freeze. same if I do the recovery mode. but if I get lucky on a reboot and can get the grub menu up again, I select previous linux version and then select 2.6.35 generic and it will boot into 11.04 with Unity. So, how can I get this thing to boot normal with the correct kernel version? I am fairly new to this linux world and don't want to have to go back to windows if I can help it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Removing Previous Versions After Updating Kernel?

Sep 12, 2010

I have looked for existing threads on this issue, but found no matches, so I am starting a new one.I first installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my laptop from a bought CD last year. When I later installed the kernel updtates with the Update Manager, I noticed the the list of versions growing when I booted up. Then something horrible happened. After installing maybe the third or fourth kernel update, I couldn't boot into Ubuntu, it failed every time. After that I left Ubuntu broken on my laptop for a while.I have now reinstalled from the CD again However, I am now very wary when it comes to installing even the important security updates, never mind the recommended ones! I prefer to keep it simple, because I don't want to do any more reinstalls for a while. So far I have just one kernel headers update on the boot list, and I am trying to figure out how to remove the previous one. I do not see the point in having a growing list of them again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Way To Get Liveboot Cd Of Previous Version Of Kubuntu That Worked?

Apr 29, 2011

I upgraded my system today from Kubuntu 10.10 (or whatever the last full release was) to 11.04 using the automated web process. I know, I know, I should have tested off a live cd or a thumb drive, foolish mistake. On upgrade the video card works, and it boots fine... but I have no keyboard and mouse. I checked the forums and realized that maybe it was a problem with the brand of keyboard and mouse I was using. so I've tried four manufacturers (even tried switching between wired and bluetooth) to no avail.I've also tried starting in recovery mode, but the problem persists.

To be specific, my bios sees the hardware just fine, and I'm able to hold down shift and pull up the selection options pre-OS, and select which one to run... and I can see the red optical light on the mouse no problem, so it's not a defect of either the motherboard or the input devices themselves. However, once in the OS, in recovery mode, or anything else, I'm left without a keyboard or mouse. As my system only has USB ports and not PS2, I can't check a hardware spec beyond what I've tried. Also, it doesn't work if I select the "boot into an older version of linux" which is odd.Can someone make a recommendation? Is there a way to get a liveboot cd of the previous version of Kubuntu that worked?

Installation :: Previous Ubuntu Version In Grub Not Recognized In Synaptic / Sort It?

Apr 6, 2011

I recently got my Dell XPS 17 and configured it to do dual boot into Win 7 and Maverick. Apparently, Maverick does not play nice with the newer hardware in this laptop so I decided to upgrade to Natty Beta. All has gone fine except for one little thing. When bootting Grub shows my WIn7 and Natty options but it also shows an option to use the older ubuntu version. It does not actually work as it stops receiving input at the user selection screen. I can't remove the image as it does not show up in synpatic nor is the package found when using the apt-get remove [linux image version] command.

I searched the forums and found that this guy:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/inde...t-1489362.html

was having the exact same problem as me and had tried exactly the same things as I have, and I still don't know how to remove those old files. I don't even know where these config files could be so that I can manually go in and remove them. I could live with the option in the Grub but I'm kind of a tidy freak and it annoys me to have a non-functional booting option taking up space.

Is it correct for me to think that a clean reinstall of natty would purge that ghost from the Grub? Also, how easy is this process and can the process mess up the MBR and not be able to do the dual-boot?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Access 10.04LTS - GNOME Hasn't Been Installed Correctly

Jun 6, 2011

I cannot access ubuntu anymore. I have ubuntu 10.04LTS Lucid Lynx. Ubuntu always prompts me to do updates. On the last update, the system wasn't able to find 4 files online. So it aborted the update and reverted to the previous state. On the next startup I could still access ubuntu. But the startup after that I got the inlog-screen (with username and password), and even with the correct username and password that's as far as it goes. In the lower right corner it says:

Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly contact your administrator. What can I do to access ubuntu again? I can, when I reboot, start up in recovery mode (but I have no clue what to do with the prompt). I can also start up older 'kernels': kernel 2.6.32-30-generic, 2.6.32-29-generic, 2.6.32-28-generic, 2.6.32-24-generic. Each of them also has a recovery mode. Not sure if this is useful at all though. Laptop: AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MT-37, 1.99 GHz, 1,00 GB RAM.
