I have a problem with the icons on the Desktop in Lubuntu (10.04). They are all aligned automatically, but I want to place them wherever I want on desktop. How can I do that? Is there an option that I missed?

Can't find info on how to move my hundreds of Camino bookmarks from a Mac G5 power-pc OSx Leopard to Ubuntu setup onto an older AMD PC. Camino doesn't appear to have a Linux version at least that I can find. If it does have one I would prefer Camino. Probably not so is it preferable in any way discernable, to the Firefox that I'm using now (doesn't look like it to me)?
Secondly, the vertical arrows for paging up and down on the screen - can't seem to find the preference that puts them together at the bottom instead of up arrow at the top and down arrow at the bottom.
I figured out how to give folders the icon of my choosing (say, by digging through to /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places).
But, if I drag my newly decorated folder to the side pane so I can have easy access to it, it becomes an ordinary folder icon again.
I've looked through the options in gconf-editor for Nautilus, and there does not seem to be an obvious fix there. It should be doable, because if you drag, say, the Music or Photos folder to the side pane it maintains its custom icon.
How can I keep my chosen icon on a folder when I bring it to the side pane?
I've set up rtorrent to move my complete downloads. But i want it to move it to a custom subdirectory according to the file.
For example.
Downloaded. i movie clip and rtorrent moves it to /media/store/eps/ but i want it to automatically move it to check the files name and put it in the right subdir.
If the file is called "Series-1" i want rtorrent to put it the subdir "Series-1" in /media/store/eps/ but if it's called "Series-2" i want rtorrent to move it to the subdir "Series-2"
All this is because my XBMC setup wont add the files to the library if i dont add as a "one-series-only"-folder.
i just added a wine program to the main menu as it didnt show on default and it has no icon, just a default one which isnt right, so just wanted to know if i can change this icon by inserting the correct image?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm keeping my documents, music, and videos etc. on a separate partition from my home directory, formatted with encrypted fat32 so that I can access it from both my windows and my ubuntu installation. So I've made the folders, transferred the files, and I selected custom icons (by right-click, properties, click on custom icon, then select the file from /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/4.
So far so good. The problem is that the custom icons don't appear in the Places sidebar in Nautilus or the main Places menu in gnome. It just comes up as a regular folder.

Does anyone have an idea/workaround so that I can use my custom icons in the Places menu as well? I have tried it with scalable icons, with no difference. I've also tried looking for a configuration file which might have the details in, but I haven't found it - I suppose this probably has something to do with how the Places menu is automatically generated.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Gnome.
Network Indicator won't budge. this happens sometimes where an icon won't move when I try to middle click and move it around.any other ways to "reset" the panel? or move the damn icon that's sitting there in the middle
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering how I could reorder/drag n drop/move the unity-2d (qt version) icons in ubuntu 10.10, like you would in the mutter version unity. I can move the launcher up and down, I just can't pull them off the launcher and drag them around. Is this a bug or has it just not been implemented yet? Other than this, I love unity 2d and can't wait for the compiz-based unity 3D to use in 11.04

I get glitches when I try to drag the icons on the panel: I can't move them properly and occasionally the whole screen gets redrawn (by this I mean it goes black and gets back several seconds later.) and gives an error with signal 11 (segmentation fault). The problem is not specific to my user account, because I tried it with a newly created user, and I didn't do any configuration on mine either. View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist

I tried deleting the nautilus configuration folder, and the gnome configuration folder...
When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.

Have had it on the laptop for a couple days and everything worked greatattempted to see what if Compiz would work and could not get it going. The computer froze upd to hard restart. When I did that and came back I found I have no desktop icons; if I log out and relog back in but switch to classic ubuntu the desktop is fine (of course not the Unity screen). I removed Compiz and attempted to remove and reinstall Unity based on a Google search but nothing changed.Two questions:1. what is the best next move to see if I can get the Unity icons and correct interface back on the desktop.

View 3 Replies View RelatedUpgraded from Karmic to Lucid (no clean install so to speak). Changed the visual effects to normal, but I somehow can't move a window to my 2nd desktop.
Changed the window manager from Compiz to metacity using the compiz fusion icon, but no result.
I have plugged my laptop into an hd-tv via but the desktop screen is slightly off to the left so the show desktop button etc is missing, the tv menu allows me to move the desktop over a bit but not quite enough, is there a way of moving the desktop position in ubuntu/software?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been looking at Ubuntu for a couple years and finally decided to give it a try on an old Dell laptop 1150.Managed to get it loaded on and it all came up, did the updates.But the desktop will not respond. When the mouse arrow passes over on the left side icons it will sometimes change the color of them but still won't do anything.I did a quick search but did not see anything relatedam an absolute rookie with this Linux thing. Did I make the right choice with Ubuntu?

It is running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with Gnome and the default "Human" theme.As the machine was delivered, there was only one icon on the desktop. This afternoon I closed a window (after successfully installing Dropbox) to reveal the desktop, and discovered that this icon had increased in size enormously, taking up about half the height of the screen (which is 640x480). I have no idea why this has happened.I also find now that new icons I put on the desktop appear at this huge size. I can resize them individually, of course, but even at the smallest they will go to they are still too big, and in any case I want icons to default to the original, sensible (small!) size.
