Ubuntu :: Mdadm Pukes After Reboot?
Aug 10, 2011
I have created a RAID 1 array using this tutorial. Rather than reiterate everything I'll just say that I followed the instructions to the letter, including the creation of /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf and editing /etc/fstab as instructed in the tutorial. The problem comes when I reboot the system. I get the following message before seeing a login prompt.
Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0,

I am getting really frustrated with trying to get my RAID5 working again. I had a RAID5 array built with 4 of the Western Digital 1.5tb "Advanced Format" drives, WD15EARS. However, when copying 1.5gb dvd encoded files to the drive, I was getting speeds of ~2mb/s. When researching how to make this faster, I came across all the posts about the Advanced Format drives and how that was causing a lot of issues for a lot of people. It looked like the solution was simple enough: partition starting at sector 64 or 2048 or whatever and then recreate the RAID. However, this is not working for me.
Here are my computer specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P43 ATX
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W
RAM: 4gb DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
Video card: ASUS GeForce 9600GT 512MB 256-bit
Linux: 10.04

Here's a brief description of my system:
120GB Sata HDD - Primary OS drive
3 x 1.0TB Sata HDD - Raid 5 array
This is on a C2D MSI P35 Platinum board. Anyway, did a fresh install of F12 on the 120GB, which I had problems with - Anaconda refused to see the drive. Fedora Live could see it fine, and it was listed as an 'nvidia_raid_member' - no idea why, but I completely erased the disc under the Live CD and proceeded to install F12.
Once F12 was installed, I loaded up mdadm to re-activate my Raid 5 array, using 'sudo mdadm --assemble --uuidthe uuid) - and it started with only 2 of the 3 drives. My /dev/sdb drive did not activate into the array, due to what mdadm said was a mismatched UUID. Ok, so I erased /dev/sdb, intending to rebuild the array. Erased /dev/sdb, and then attempted 'sudo mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdb' and I get this error: "mdadm: Cannot add disks to a 'member' array, perform this operation on the parent container" - I can find NO information on this error message.
[Code].....
I don't believe the hard drives are connected in the exact same order they were in before - I disconnected everything in the system and blew it out (it was pretty dusty)

I am planning on setting up a 4x1TB RAID5 with mdadm under Ubuntu 9.10. I tried installing mdadm using "sudo apt-get install mdadm", all worked fine except for the following error: Code: Generating array device nodes... /var/lib/dpkg/info/mdadm.postinst: 170: /dev/MAKEDEV: not found failed. The end result is the /dev/md0 device has not been created, as can be seen here:
Code: windsok@beer:~$ mdadm --detail /dev/md0 mdadm: cannot open /dev/md0: No such file or directory After googling, I found the following bug which describes the issue: [URL] However it was reported way back in April 2009, and it does not look like it will be fixed any time soon, so I was wondering if anyone knows a workaround for this bug, to get me up and running?

I'm setting up a DIY NAS system, running Ubuntu server from a CF and using 2 SATA drives. I only need RAID1. so that should do. Setting up RAID1 with mdadm is straightforward, and all of my tests with failure/recover scenario work fine in VirtualBox. Most of the tutorials on the net are talking about using mdadm in conjunction with LVM2. What is the reasoning behind LVM2 over mdadm?

I'm trying to get mdadm to assemble all my drives with help of uuid.
When I use

mdadm: /dev/md0 has been started with 3 drives.
So the setup works. But I want to do it the proper way with UUID.

I'm the user operating ubuntu 9.10 server. I made configuration with software mirroring(raid1). when I checked cron, I found the mdadm in cron.d dir. 57 0 * * 0 root [ -x /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray ] && [ $(date +\%d) -le 7 ] && /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray --cron --all -- quiet checkarray is supposed to be run on the first sunday of every month. so I just want to know
1. what does checkarray do exactly?
2. does it make a stress to system?
3. Is there any problem if I get rid of the script from cron?

After doing this install everything works fine as expected. I can reboot, shutdown and bootup as I much as I want to and the system will work. Now, I proceed to do the following (as root obviously - sudo bash)

When I try to restart the system now, I get to the grub boot loader and then it just breaks with the following message I've identified 'mdadm' as being the culprit here. Any idea why this would happen? Just a subnote. The reason I'm installing mdadm is to create a soft-raid as follows with the remaining space on each drive:

I have 4 WD10EARS drives running in a RAID 5 array using MDADM.Yesterday my OS Drive failed. I have replaced this and installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on it.I then installed MDADM, and rebooted the machine, hoping that it would automatically rebuild the array. It hasnt, when i look at the array using Disk Utility, it says that the array is not running. If i try to start the array it says : Error assembling array: mdadm exited with exit code 1: mdadm: failed to RUN_ARRAY /dev/md0: Input/output errormdadm: Notenough devices to start the array.I have tried MDADM --assemble --scan and it gives this output:mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 2 drives - not enough to start the array.I know that there are 4 drives present as they are all showing, but it is only using 2 of them.I also ran MDADM -- detail /dev.md0 which gave:

So i am having trouble resuming an array. When i try it tells me that it's unable to do so because only one drive is available. Here is the weird bit, if i examine each of the drives one thinks that both drives are available and the other drive shows the first drive as being removed. (see below). This is a raid 5 and one of the drive has failed and been removed. I know that this was a terrible idea but the array has been functioning for a few weeks with just the two drives. And now i can't resume. Here is the output of the examine functions for each drive: notice that sda1 sees both drive 0 and 1 as active, but sdb2 sees drive 0 as removed.
[Code]...
I need to resume without losing the data, i'm afraid that adding drive 0 to array will reinitialize the array losing all of the data. Someone please help me out in finding the right command to get the array up long enough for me to get the important data off.(and please refrain from telling me how stupid i am for not getting it all off as soon as drive 2 went faulty. I know it was dumb but this is where i am now and can't change the past).

I tryed to install ubuntu 10.04 using the beta alternative install cd.
Everything went fine until the partitioning section.
I choose manual partitioning and all my existing partitions were detected correctly included my 2 mdadm raid0 arrays.
I choose md0 as my / partition and choose to format the partition
I choose md1 as my /home partition as choose to keep the data
When I choose to continue and write the changes to disk the install started to create an ext4 partition on md0, the installer then stopped with an error that the kernel could not reread the partition table.
I aborted the installation at this point.
Now I can not access either of my arrays.
I have booted a livecd and installed mdadm. When I checked /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf my existing arrays were already listed.
Code:

Created my own file server/nas, but get stuck in a problem after couple of months. I have a server with 4x 1,5tb disks, all connected to sata ports and 1 40gb ata133 disk running ubuntu 9.10 x64 amd. I've created a raid5 array using mdadm. It all worked great for couple of months but lately the raid5 array is degraded. disk sdd1 is faulting every few days. I have checked the drive but it is fine. If I re-add the disk and wait for 6 hours my raid5 array is all fine again, but after a few shutdowns, it is degraded.

I currently have a Raid0 setup with two disks and I have no problems whatsover. I currently bought 3 brand new 1B drives and I set up Raid5. I created the array and everything works fine. I formatted the array and mounted it. When I tried to copy 750gb of data over my new array, it copies fine at some point and it fails. After reboot, I am seeing the array inactive. I tried everything and could not get the raid back active status. I have removed the array and recreated again, formatted again. When I started copying my files over, exactly same thing happened.

I'm setting up Ubuntu 10.04 Server x64 on a Gateway DX4710. I installed on a 500GB SATA, using encrypted LVM, added webmin, and used ufw to configure iptables. All seemed fine.I then set up RAID1 on two 1TB SATAs. Using webmin, I created Linux RAID partitions on sdb and sdc. I then ran ...
sudo mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/md0
sudo mkdir /data
sudo chmod -R 777 /data
sudo mount /dev/md0 /data
All still seemed fine.I could see /data in the webmin filesystem list, and had ca. 1.4TB total local disk space. At that point, I decided that I really wanted an encrypted filesystem on /dev/md0. I also needed to tweak the fan setup. And so I shut down, without adding /dev/md0 to fstab. And it was probably still synching. Now /dev/md0 is semi missing. That is ...
sudo mdadm -D /dev/md0 => doesn't exist
sudo mdadm -E /dev/sdb1 => part of RAID1 with sdc1
sudo mdadm -E /dev/sdc1 => part of RAID1 with sdb1
What do I do now? Can I recover /dev/md0? Is it just that I didn't add it to fstab? Can I just do that now? Or do I need to delete sdb1 and sdc1, and start over?

My motherboard has a BIOS feature to support RAID1 for two disks. I know it's FakeRAID but that's what Windows can work with. I've read that Linux's built in softraid mdadm is better so I'd prefer to use that for Linux's own filesystems. Can I enable FakeRAID in the BIOS without it affecting Linux in any way? Is it possible for Ubuntu to read and/or write to the NTFS partition that's raided with the fakeraid?
Also, if running mdadm in RAID 1 how much risk is there of losing data if the computer crashes? Is e2fsck able to repair a filesystem on a RAID 1 setup?

intending to set up an all-in-one server, i threw in the ubuntu server 10.04 (amd64) cd. during the text-install, i set up the device-topology below, and it worked.
[Code]....
then i tested my raid by hot-pulling off the sda wire (ouch). worked fine, system still worked, and it also managed rebooting from the left sdb (which of course showed up being sda, lacking the first drive). now i am trying to recover this pre-crash state. adding the first disk (showing up as sdb), i can add it to md0 and let it start syncronizing for 2 hours. but... i can?t boot anymore with the recovered first disk being sda...
at first, booting got stuck in an initrd-prompt after complaining it couldn?t find my sys-logical volume. after a lot of trial and error i don?t even get any complaints, just a black screen which would let me wait for a boot for weeks... so, my system does not boot from my first disk, whether i plug in the second or not. my second disk still boots. my last attempt to get booting fine again has been: zero sda?s first and last gigabyte to kill any ids duplicate sdb?s first cylinder to sda to make it bootable reinitialize sdb?s part.table using command o in fdisk for a new disk-id recreate sda1 partition add sda1 to md0

I have ubuntu server 10.04 on a server with 2.8ghz 1gb ddr2 with the os on a 2gb cf card attached to the IDE channel and a software raid5 with 4 x 750gb drives. On a samba share using these drives I am only getting around 5 MB/s connected via wireless N at 216mbps and my router and server both having gigabit ports. Is a raid 5 supposed to be that slow? I was seeing speeds of anywhere from 20-50MB/s from other people and am just wondering what i am doing wrong to be so far below that.

I know this is probably a very generic linux question, but since I am using ubuntu - I thought it safer to ask here. I have jumped into the deep end of linux - and I am afraid that I will be forced to swim sooner rather than later.
Let me start at the beginning - I am and probably will be a windows fan for a long time - let me not list the reasons - or else you guys will probably hang met out to dry - the one thing I have discovered - is that windows sucks in generating a software RAID - especially the RAID 5 that i was looking for any case - after loosing plenty data via windose - I decided to attempt linux/ ubuntu. I must say - so far so good.
I used this excellent guide: [URL] and must say that the raid is performing admirably - I am currently busy adding/growing the 12th 1Tb drive onto the RAID, and no issues so far(some other major WOW advantages i have noticed... like speed writing too and reading from the RAID.. )
See below MDstat outputcat proc mdstat:
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md0 : active raid5 sdl1[11] sdj1[10] sdb1[1] sdm1[6] sdk1[2] sdi1[8] sdh1[0] sdg1[3] sdf1[4] sde1[9] sdd1[5] sdc1[7]
9767599360 blocks super 0.91 level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [12/12] [UUUUUUUUUUUU]
[==========>..........] reshape = 50.7% (495864576/976759936) finish=1482.0min speed=5407K/sec
unused devices: <none>
My questions :
If one drive fails on the array(for example SDK1) - how the heck do i determine which physical hardware device it is that has failed? (without compromising the other data - yes unfortunately I cant afford to backup 11TB of data - personal server). I don't have space in the box for a mouse - not even talking about a hot spare drive - thus adding the backup drive before removing the faulty drive is rather difficult - but if that's the only option I will have to keep with that as everybody know RAID5 is only 1 drive backup - so partly I would like to solve the issue as quick as possible -without having to resort to disconnecting one drive at a time to determine which is which. If the drive assignments ( SDA/SDB/SDC) is constant
What is the most intuitive/fast way to determine that a faulty drive exist in the array? - i.e. is there some sort of GUI solution for MDADM that will tell me the moment that a drive has turned faulty? - The box is currently not on the internet -meaning notification via email is not possible. Is there a non-destructible way to convert the RAID-5 to RAID-6? (I would rather sacrifice 1TB of free space - for peace of mind) - and RAID6 will make troubleshooting a bit easier since 3 drives will have to fail before data-loss.

I'm trying to set up a RAID1 partition on my Ubuntu 9.10 workstation. On this dual-boot system, Ubuntu is running from a separate drive (/dev/sdc - an SSD that is quite small, which is why I need more disk space). Besides that, there are two traditional 500 GB hard drives, which have Windows 7 installed (I want to keep the Windows installation intact), and about half of the space unallocated. This space is where I want to set up a single, large RAID1 partition for Linux.
(This, to my understanding, would be software RAID, whereas the Windows partitions are on hardware RAID - I hope this isn't a problem... Edit: See Peter's comment. I guess this shouldn't be a problem since I see both drives separately on Linux.)On both disks, /dev/sda and /dev/sdb, I created, using fdisk, identical new partitions of type "Linux raid autodetect" to fill up the unallocated space.
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 10 80293+ de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 * 11 106 768000 7 HPFS/NTFS
[code]....
But so is "Device or resource busy" when trying to create the RAID array. Quite strange.
Update: Could the device mapper have something to do with this? How do /dev/mapper and dmraid relate to all this mdadm stuff anyway? Both provide software RAID, but.. differently? Sorry for my ignorance here. Under /dev/mapper/ there are some device files that, I think, somehow match the 3 Windows RAID partitions (sd{a,b}1 through sd{a,b}3). I don't know why there are four of these arrays though.
$ ls /dev/mapper/
control isw_dgjjcdcegc_ARRAY1 isw_dgjjcdcegc_ARRAY3
isw_dgjjcdcegc_ARRAY isw_dgjjcdcegc_ARRAY2

Recently, one the SMART utility said that one of the drives had failed and another drive was about to fail. I downed the box and hooked them up to my windows machine to run sea tools on them (They are all seagate drives). Sea Tools said that the drives were fine, while ubuntu said they were failing/dead. Yesterday I decided to try to fix one of the drives in the raid. I turned the server off, took the failed drive out, and restarted. Of course the raid didn't work because only 2 of the 3 drives were there, however it had been working w/ only 2 of the 3 drives for a couple months now (I'm a lazy college student). I turned it back off and back on with the drive there just to see if I could get the raid up again, but I havn't been able to get it to go. So far I've tried:
Code:
mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sd[b,c,d]
mdadm: no recogniseable superblock on /dev/sdb
mdadm: /dev/sdb has no superblock - assembly aborted
[code]....
I'm looking for a way to trick the raid into working with just 2 drives until I can warranty the seagate and buy an external 1.5 TB drive to use as another backup. how to remove the bad drive from the array and replace it with a fresh drive, without data loss.

I just had a whole 2TB Software RAID 5 blow up on me. I rebooted my server, which i hardly ever do and low and behold i loose one of my raid 5 sets. It seems like two of the disks are not showing up properly.. What i mean by that is the OS picks up the disks, but it doesnt see the partitions.
I ran smartct -l on all the drives in question and they're all in good working order.
Is there some sort of repair tool i can use to scan the busted drives (since they're available) to fix any possible errors that might be present.
Here is what the "good" drive looks like when i use sfdisk:
Quote:
sudo sfdisk -l /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 121601 cylinders, 255 heads, 63 sectors/track
Units = cylinders of 8225280 bytes, blocks of 1024 bytes, counting from 0

I have a fileserver which is running Ubuntu Server 6.10. I had a RAID5 array consisting of the following disks:
Code:
/dev/sda1
/dev/sdb1
/dev/sdd1
/dev/md0 -
the raid drive for the above three disks. The sda1 disk has failed and the array is running on 2 of 3 disks
/dev/sdc (OS disk)
/dev/sde (new 2tb disk - unused)
/dev/sdf (new 2tb disk - unused)
My plan was to rebuild the array using the two new disks as RAID1. Would the best way to do this be to create a new RAID1 disk on /dev/md1 then copy all data over from /dev/md0? Also - this may sound stupid but since all 3 drives in md0 are identical i'm not sure physically which disk is bad. I tried disconnecting each disk one-by-one then rebooting but the system doesn't appear to want to boot without the bad drive connected. I've already failed the disk in the array with mdadm but i'm unsure of how to remove it properly.

I notice the version of mdadm distributed in Ubuntu is 2.6.7.1, but versions exist up to 2.6.9 (excluding all the 3.X ones) Is it worth using a later version?
