I have a Karmic server install on which I've set up a network drive mapping to a NAS (CIFS). I'm having trouble with automounting the disk though, as (from what I can tell) the disk is attempting to mount before the network is up.dmesg shows the following:
Code:

I have four PCs in my house that are running opensuse 11.2 and I want to create a home network to share files, scanner and printer.

This error only occurs on Zenwalk. When i run puppy from the live cd the file shares are always visible, without fail.Under puppy i use pNethood. When the ping command is used there is no problem, and the pc name can be pinged. This is shown below:

i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
In Googling around it appears that the Network Manager used to have a nice simple (obvious, logical, straightforward, intuitive, easy-to-use... ... can you tell I'm a bit surprised that there's not a simple button to do this, it's pretty common functionality ) option in the IPv4 tab called "Shared to other computers" allowing you to share your network connection with any computers connected to yours... kind of like this:
[URL] ....
Professor Google seems to indicate that this may have existed in Debian at one point but, I don't see this option anymore. How do I get it back (or is there another gui way to do this without editing the /etc/network/interfaces file... if there's no other way to do this... that's fine but I'd prefer an easy method of enabling and disabling sharing)?
What I'm trying to do... I have a Beaglebone Black connected via IP over USB. When I'm ssh'ed into the BeagleBone, I want to be able to use aptitude install to grab new packages etc... and that kind of requires access to the outside world. Everything I've found so far seems to to require a modification to the interfaces file but since (according to the interfaces man page) the preferred method is to use the network manager if possible... I'm trying to avoid that.
* It should be noted that I'm running sid with the experimental 4.3 kernel so... maybe in doing so I've shot myself in the foot?
I have a computer with ubuntu 10.04 and one with windows 7 and i want to be able to print from one computer to the other (both have printers) how am i to do this ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to mount an ISO file over a Windows network share. The share is automatically mounted by Nautilus somewhere in ~/.gvfs and I'm trying to mount the image using:
Code:
sudo mount -o loop,ro -t iso9660 '~/.gvfs/[...]/image.iso' /tmp/iso
However, I just get a
Code:
[...]/image.iso: Permission denied
When I copy the ISO file over to my local hard disk, it works fine, but not over the network. How come? I don't have write access to said network share, but I don't think that should be necessary anyway.
Running Ubuntu 10.4 lts I wish to Share files and a printer over a network the network is run on my main computer running XP . but I no joy in the share files over the network box :system> preference > personal file sharing . View 2 Replies View RelatedI had share my folder through network with other PC,now i want to Rivert(un-share) this, how can i..?
I had right-click on that folder but i didn't get any option for that....it's my first time of sharing data via samba..
I'm probably missing something really simple here...
In Ubuntu, with Nautilus, there is an easy GUI method of making folder to be shared and visible over the network.
I can't seem to find the means of doing this in Xubuntu, either in Thunar or Gigolo.
I can use either of these to browse folders on other networked machines I have shared using Nautilus.
I had Nautilus for a while on my XFCE machine and used that to share some folders, but I removed it as it was conflicting with Thunar at times.
share a Dreambox HDD over the network. To those who don't know - Dreambox is a digital TV tuner with Linux OS and in my case it has a fairly large hard drive, which I would like to make available over the Local Network, so I can use it as a network hard drive on my Ubuntu Karmic and Windows 7.
The Dreambox has an ftp server set up but I can't watch video files directly from an ftp server somehow, it forces me to download those files first. So what I want is to make that hard drive available as a normal local network shared item with permissions to read write and execute, so that I could also keep my Movies in that hard drive or maybe even be able to download to that hard drive directly.
I think it has to be possible somehow Or at least if it was possible to mount it somehow on the Ubuntu, hmm.
Be the way my Dreambox model is DM 7020 and if I connect to it using telnet it uses the sh Shell I think.
I'm in a strange situation where i have a windows host with a Ubuntu Server VM running Proftpd which needs to be able to ftp files to a shared drive on the host. This is so the webserver (a separate VM) can access the files in the ftp directory. Also so i can take snapshots of the server without the ftpd files. So, my question is how can i do this? Am i able to mount the share somewhere and use that to store my ftp accounts/files? Is it possible (or is it a stupid idea) to mount the home directory on the share?

I have tried that, i have tried smb://sulnas/video
Currently I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on separate partitions and I would like to know if there is a convenient way to share data between the two without having to set up anything using an internet network .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a computer in another room of my house that I share the drive with my primary computer using NFS.
I just mount the network drive as normal in NFS. But I discovered today that I can't open openoffice files off of the drive. I have to copy them to the local disk first. I can open text files, pictures, pdfs. But .odt files will load the splash screen for open office, but go no further than that.
Anyone know how to fix this? It's kind of a killer for NFS for me. I really would like to be able to open documents over the network.
here's the settings I'm using in fstab in case those are wrong
Code: 192.168.0.3:/media/Data /media/Data nfs rw,hard,intr 0 0
I am trying to map to my schools shares VIA their network.
Normally on windows, I would just say Run and type the network path and it would open a window with the folders.
the path is \KNA11.XX.ON.CA you need to be on our VPN to connect to it, which I am.
How do i access this directory in ubuntu? And even better, make it a permanent shortcut or mountpoint so that i can easily access it later without having to re-mount it.
I have some large files on a network share that I would like to burn directly to a DVD using K3b. Any new data project does not have access to the Windows share. I can access the files ok in Natty Norwhale. Just cannot seem to find them in K3b.

I swear Samba ends up working but maybe the problem is with Windows 7. I looked at the SAMBAWiki Win 7 page and made sure my registry values were what they should have been (and they were).
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.4 LTS and would like to share this computer on my windows network. I understand that Samba is the way to go, but how do I configure linux with Samba so I can share files and printers? I am able to see my windows computers (vista and xp) but I am not able to see the linux computer with those machines plus I would like to change the network name of the linux machine if possible. Please any help and information will be much appreciated. Eventually I would like to server a printer from this linux machine to the other windows machines.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having quite a big problem with Internet sharing. After doing a clean install of Lucid, I tried to set up a shared connection between my computer and my Roku set-top box. I have noticed that I am only able to set up a connection profile in Network Connections under the Ethernet card with the active Internet connection. That is, whenever I try to set up a connection, I am not given the option of using the second Ethernet card. Thus I can't share the network connection. Can someone PLEASE help me? The IRC has been completely useless.

Your scanner is installed properly and fully function. If you need to install your scanner first, have a look at the ScanningHowTo. To check if your scanner is connected and installed properly you can use the command "scanimage -L".
The machine we're configuring to use as the scanner server has the ip address 192.168.1.1 and subnet-mask 255.255.255.0. This means that this machine is on the 192.168.1.0/24 (CIDR notation) network/subnet. code...

I have 2 Ubuntu machines: a desktop in my bedroom, and a laptop.
I have my music shared on my desktop machine, and can access it through the network menu item in the nautilus manager, but I want the files from the share to be mounted on the disk so I can access it through the commandline.
If I right-click the shared folder in Nautilus, it says its location is smb://rob/music
If I do:
mount -t smbfs //rob/music /mnt/music, it tells me that it cant locate rob.
So I try "ping rob" and that doesn't work.
I can't make a hosts entry for rob which happens at this moment to be 192.168.0.8, because my router assigns different IP addresses to various machines at different times, and I cant seem to find a way to make static maps from MAC address to ip address.
So, how come nautilus can see my samba share on the machine "rob", but the mount commands cannot?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is a way to mount a network CIFS share manually to allow it to prompt for password. I've been Googling around and found a couple options. One was to store your credentials in a file and then add the fstab entry to look at the file. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of storing my credentials in a plain text file though, even if I put file permissions on it.Is there a way to mount the share so that it prompts for credentials. The share isn't always online so I want to mount it manually.
