Ubuntu Security :: IM Spam From Genuine Contacts

Mar 8, 2010

I, as many here, have friends on different IM accounts (and btw, so great that we have pidgin and empathy and not have to deal with 3 different softwares to talk to them) and of all that I have... which are not so many... one of them sends me spam, not all the time, but it happens and I kind of feel sorry for her so I'd like to see if there's a way for her to retake control of her account or if she can't do anything at all with it.

I have other friends in MSN but I get spam only from her and she's given up on how to fix it cause she doesnt know how to. I did a search (and keep looking for more in the web) and so far it doenst look promising (but is also because I dont know what else to do). The problem is I get messages which I know for sure are spam, cause her english is more limited and the messages are very polished in that regard.

I got this from another discussion elsewhere: "troutbot = These bots get your IM from scraping the Internet screenname and connect you randomly to someone else. While you're talking to the troutbot, they're just an intermediary connecting you to some other guy who also had his IM scraped." So far the times I get spam... the other side never answers, but if my friend is online she can. I thought that on these IM services... if you are logged in nobody else can log in with your username/password...

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 No More Internet After Dualboot Windows Install

Dec 20, 2010

I have a Dell XPS 420 with Ubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-23-generic x86_64). My internet used to work (out of the box) without any problems, but after install of Windows Vista (Home Ed. 32bit), I am unable to use the internet in Ubuntu. The network card is a Linksys WMP600N Wireless-N PCI Adapter. In Windows it works without problems.

In ubuntu, the network manager indicates that I am connected to the network, and I have an IP address in the 192.168.* range. I am able to ping the router, but unable to ping outside addresses. I have not changed anything, but still my wireless connections has stopped working.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Internet With Windows XP?

I have a laptop running Windows XP with a secure wireless internet connection. I want to share this connection to my desktop running Ubuntu 9.10 via an direct ethernet cable connection. So far in Windows I checked the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" in the Wireless Network Connection Properties menu. Doing this creates a new IP Configuration. Here is an output of running the ipconfig command: Windows IP Configuration

Ubuntu :: Edit Files In Windows Over Internet?

Jan 28, 2010

I have a remote server running Ubuntu, but the only computer that I have physical access to runs windows xp. Is there any way to edit the files remotely? Right now, I'm using ssh and then nano to edit the files, but I'd rather use a windows text editor (notepad++). I know I can use pscp to copy files, but every time I make a change to the file, I have to uploaded again to see the results (very tedious).

PS- the win xp computers im using are at my college. You CAN install software on them, but there's a firewall to the outside internet blocking SOME ports... SSH, port 80, port 8080 work fine right now. I can get admin access to the windows computer, and I have root control over the ubuntu one. Also, I can only use whatever computer is open... so I'd prefer to use a program that can be installed on a USB stick.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Internet With Windows

Feb 26, 2010

I have an Ethernet hub, and want two computers (both notebooks) to share my internet connection. One is running Ubuntu 9.10 and the other is running Windows Vista. I want both computers to be able to connect to the internet (I use a cable modem).

However, when I plug both computers in, I am able to get only one of them working at one time. When Ubuntu works with the internet, Windows does not work (although it sees the internet connection). When Windows works, Ubuntu sees the connection, but cannot connect.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Internet After Using Windows

Apr 28, 2010

I have a dual booted Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10 box and have an unusual problem in that after connecting to the internet on Windows I cannot connect using Ubuntu. I don't believe it is actually a problem with configuring my Ubuntu connections because when I get up in the morning Ubuntu connects without any problem - this problem only exists (and persists for at least several hours) if I try to connect immediately after connecting on Windows. I don't know how long the problem lasts because I usually get so ***ed off I just go to bed and then in the morning I can connect. As I have recently been forced to change my ISP due to moving house, is it possibly a problem with my provider's service and not a Ubuntu problem at? I have a second Ubuntu 9.10 box which I have to manually connect [URL] which does connect even when the dual booted one won't.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Sharing Like Windows ?

Aug 30, 2010

Just took the plunge and removed Windows 7 from my desktop rig and I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04

I was using this PC to share my Internet (DSL) connection to any and all other PC's on my network, wired and wireless, and I am attempting to set this up in Ubuntu.

My desktop, other wired PC's, a wireless AP and my DSL modem are all connected to a 8 port Ethernet switch and I was using ICS in Windows 7 to share my Internet connection once I established the connection from my desktop.

Can this be done in Ubuntu? As soon as I make the DSL connection it says that Auto eth0 disconnects (which I set to share to all in IPv4 settings which I read on the forum is the way to share)... thus nothing is currently shared :/

In this document it states that the sharing computer needs two network interfaces... but in Windows I only used the one...

Networking :: Use Internet From Guest Windows XP In Ubuntu?

Jan 23, 2011

I am basically trying to connect to Internet in Ubuntu 10.10.
I am using my mobile Nokia 6600 via bluetooth which unfortunately isnt supported by Ubuntu .
There have been many blogs and threads on the net to fix this issue but none worked for me.
So i tried to use virtual box 3.2.12 in Ubuntu to check whether Windows XP Pro can access net from my cell via bluetooth.
It worked!!!!! But my basic intention to get net in ubuntu was to install some really good softwares in ubuntu Software centre which otherwise require downloading of lot of .deb dependencies manually.
Can anyone tell me how to use the Internet from the guest windows XP in ubuntu?

The first time, it can connect to the wireless internet in the dormitory. The succeeding days, the network icon just keeps on turning as if it's trying to connect. What's wrong? Is it because of the drivers? If that's the case, then why are there times when I can connect to the wireless internet?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing A Windows XP VM Internet Connection?

Jun 20, 2010

I'm trying to share the internet connection of my Windows XP Virtual Machine (virtualbox) to Ubuntu. I know it sounds weird, but what happens is that i'm using a 3G modem to connect to the internet and 3G connections are still very unstable with ubuntu's network manager. Fortunately, the modem works a lot better with my Virtual Machine. I have already set up a "host only" network between my Windows XP guest and my Ubuntu host and i can they can ping each other but i still can't share the connection of my virtual machine. I already selected "share this connection" on win xp but i think i still have to configure something on ubuntu for it to work. The interface Ubuntu uses is vboxnet0 (not eth0).

This is the last thing to do before i can get rid of my Windows XP partition

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection Sharing To Windows XP?

Nov 18, 2010

configuring Internet Connection Sharing from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Windows XP machine. I've seen How To's but they didn't work, yet.

The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through a DSL USB modem that required packages not provided with the distribution, and specific instructions to configure it; so getting Internet working alone was difficult. As a result, I don't even use Network Manager, rather connect using the command pppoe-start. The machine is connected to the Windows PC through a simple cable, through the Ethernet card.

Some tutorials I've seen on ICS are for machines with two Ethernet cards, or for wireless connections; but I've seen none for a USB modem. However I once found one, years ago, and it worked, but I couldn't find it now. It was using iptables, and I didn't really understand what I was doing, but it worked. But then I had to format the disk, and now I can't find a way to get it working again.

Ubuntu :: Windows Licenses - Wipe The Disk, Install Lucid, And Run Windows In Virtualbox?

Sep 28, 2010

Background: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.

What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.

Questions:

1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?

2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.

3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?

4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??

(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)

Ubuntu Networking :: Still Can't Share An Internet Connection With Windows XP Client?

Feb 1, 2010

I have been trying off and on for weeks to share my Internet connection with a Windows XP client (netbook). While I can ping back and forth between the two machines, in the form of a ping test, I can't get to the Internet from the client, no matter what I try.

My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop (host) has two NICs, eth0 and eth1. eth0 connects to the Internet. eth1 goes to the Windows XP client. Regardless of whether I use an Ethernet crossover cable or a standard cable, I can get the two machines to talk to each other, but no further.

Things I already tried:

-Tried setting eth1 to "shared" mode in NetworkManager on the host. I set the Win XP machine to automatically acquire an address & DNS. Didn't work.

-Manually configured the IP settings on both machines, like this:
client:
address 10.0.0.2
subnetmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1

[Code]....

Despite all of the above, I still cannot share the host's Internet connection with the client. I don't understand where the client's traffic is going, and why I can't share the connection. As far as I know, I am not doing any sort of firewalling or blocking on the host, so there is no obvious reason that the client's traffic simply disappears. I just know that whenever I open a Web browser on the client, all I ever get is error messages.

I have had no issues setting up a shared connection when the host runs Windows XP, so I am pretty sure there is no broken hardware causing the problem. Why can't I share the connection under Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect To Windows Internet Connection Share (ICS)

Mar 16, 2010

I am not able to connect to WPA encrypted share using network-manager or wicd. nm-applet crashes when trying to connect. I am attempting to setup wpa_supplicant, but haven't got it working yet.As usual, the wireless networking out of the box experience in Ubuntu doesn't work. This is extremely frustrating. General :: Solution For Using X And Windows Over Internet?

Feb 8, 2011

Macbook air as local in-hands computer, connected at home over 802.11G->Verizon FIOS 15mbit down/5mbit up fiber. Also sometimes from other connections fast (university) and slow (hotels etc).Dell poweredge 750 server remotely wired GbE through 25mbit down 15mbit up fiber

So far I've tried to just ssh -X poweredge and run X apps, redirecting them to my local X server on Mac OS X. This worked great from my university's connection (over wifi) but worked poorly at home. Apparantly X protocol is very sensitive to latency.. windows wouldn't accept button presses for instance, would have to click many times. I've heard there are X settings and SSH settings I can use to decrease latency - does anyone know more about these??? As far as security, all I actually care about is encrypting my pw as I log in. It's not a sensitive situation. I suppose a solution would be to set DISPLAY on the Linux box to my IP and port except that it often changes and I'm always behind firewalls (some that I can put holes in like home, some I can't like school)I've also tried VNC which works "ok"

When using windows, which I haven't tried yet, are my options to remote desktop over SSH and VNC over ssh (run VNC server on XP) - or are there any more? What's likely to work best?Looking for an answer to tweaking the latency and also any completely fresh ideas or suggestions of tools that may be better suited to this situation

Ubuntu Networking :: Attempting To Share Internet Connection With Windows XP Client

Jan 25, 2010

Over the last several days, I've been trying like hell to share my (wired) Internet connection with a netbook, running Windows XP, attached via crossover cable to my desktop's extra NIC (eth0). The eth0 link is established, but I can't get to the Internet from the Windows XP machine.I can ping one machine from the other, but any bits sent from the Win XP netbook mysteriously disappear when trying to reach any website.

There is no firewall running on the Ubuntu machine as far as I know. Windows Firewall is likewise disabled on the Windows XP machine. The Ubuntu machine connects to the Internet through another wired NIC, eth1.In Windows XP parlance, what I am trying to do would be called "bridging," where eth0 and eth1 would be the two parts of the bridge. In fact I already made it work, with both the netbook and my desktop running Windows XP. It took about 5 minutes.I can't believe what a huge pain this has been in Ubuntu. I'm pretty much ready to give up. There seems to be no way to get an Ubuntu system and a Windows XP system to share an Internet connection.
