Ubuntu :: Install 10.04 Via An 8gig USB Drive?
Sep 14, 2010
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 via an 8gig USB drive. I have no idea where to start or what to do when I do. I'm completely new to linux, and BTW I'm open to any suggestions on other distros. I'm using a 14 year old compaq and XP is just too much for it. Is there a program I can use to download and install it all in one or what. I have 10.04 downloaded but my computer is trying to use roxio CD creator 5 to do whatever it's doing.

I use Unity 11.04 on a 64-bit machine with 8Gig and a TB hard drive, so resources shouldn't be a problem. The pane on the left hand side (showing my computer main folders has disappeared when I click on "Home Folder". So has the ability to have two panels. I can see the hole folders but not any of the extra folders (dragged folders or usb sticks).
I now use Krusader which solves most of my problems. However there is a folder of files I use a lot, so before I lost this ability I had draged the folder to the left hand column showing all my folders. Now I can't access the folder I had dragged to the left hand panel, and it seems to have disappeared from its original place.

I have tried googling this thing but returns didn't fit my needed answers while I have very limited time staying on-line, so I try to solicit help here from those who have gone this way before.
My Need:
1. I need to boot and run Slackware 12.2 from an 8gig USB pendrive. <Regardless from where I install them: I can install and prefer to isntall it from a DVD/cdrom drive. But booting my Slackware DVD installer cannot see the USB pendrive which fdisk -l returns as 'sdb1-ext2, sdb2-ext2 and sdb3-swap' after falling into the console mode.>
2. I partition my usb-stick into 1.2Gig to mount as / then 5Gig to mount as /home and about 200+Mbs for swap. Things I have tried--
a) I have run Ubuntu 8 on a pendrive by a very simple way of doing it. There are links for that. But I don't like Ubuntu where it uses vfat on a casper drive, and also I cannot control the system the way I used to in Slackware. I deleted it.
b) I tried booting my Slackware 12.2 DVD installer but there is no way to find my usb drive when preparation phase came. I need a little help. I have lesser time now for tinkering things, being busy in my job.
What would I do to attain my objective quicker than being a scientist-experimenting-things? Is there a link for a fitting solution so that I can go and read from there?

What do I call this device in /etc/fstab. Currently the line I'm using is... code...
Having made a mount directory (/media/ipod) an error message tells me
... mount: special device /dev/sdc0 does not exist...
when I try to mount it.
I cannot see it in 'gparted' or 'disk utility' but I can see it on sys log and kern log when I plug it in and remove it.
I have visited several help forums and loaded several types of recommended software (ifuse-libs and mux's etc) but with no satisfactory result.
I have successfully 'Jail broken' the device using 'Blackra1n' on a windows machine.
It used to appear on the desktop but alas...no more. I've obviously broken something!

The software: Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10.The wetware: A programmer doing his best (read: ignorant, shitty) as an ad-h.When I plug the USB thumb drive in, the install OS gives it a drive letter -- /dev/sdb -- and it pushes the original /dev/sdb down to /dev/sdc. The installation works without a hitch, and GRUB2 installs, dutifully pointing the root at /dev/sdc1 instead of /dev/sdb1.I let GRUB2 start normally ("drive not found"), holding the <shift> key to get to the "rescue>" prompt. From there, I issue "ls" to discover that GRUB can NOT see /dev/sdb, and I can tell that because what is showing up as (hd1) does NOT have three partitions as it should.GRUB2 sees a total of 16 drives, not 26, and one of the drives it sees is "fd0" (there is no floppy drive).Issuing commands like "set prefix=(hdx,y)" and "root=(hdx,y)" have no effect as, I think it's just pointing to the (reiserfs)content drives and this GRUB2 tells me "unknown filesystem".I did try them all in vain, hoping that maybe I'd find a kernel somewhere.I used the "rescue" mode of the Ubuntu installer (the USB thumb drive) to get to a root prompt. From there, I mounted /dev/sdc2 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb2) onto /mnt, I mounted /dev/sdc1 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb1) onto /mnt/boot,and then I chroot'ed to /mnt.I edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg, editing every instance of "root=(hd2,1)" to the appropriate UUID for the "real" /dev/sdb1. Then I issued update-grub2.It refused to work giving me an banal "no such partition" error or something like that.
We originally had this server functioning by putting / and /boot on the SS SanDisk, which caused no problems during installation because /dev/sda doesn't get shifted. We then figured it was a good idea to put our OS files on something with failover capability. And that started us down this crappy "shifting drive letter" path. Can I control which drive letter the USB thumb drive gets assigned during the install process? If I could make it be /dev/sdc then I wouldn't be facing this problem. An alternate solution would be to know the cryptic GRUB2 commands that I can issue from the command prompt post-install, pre-reboot.But I'm wondering if that will ultimately work at all considering that GRUB2 couldn't see /dev/sdb at all.

I have a setup with 3 hard drives. The first hard drive has windows 7 and is a solid state, for my fast computing needs. The second hard drive has another copy of windows 7 on one partition and Ubuntu 11.04 on another (and SWAP space). The third hard drive is just storage.Grub is installed on the first(SSD) hard drive, as well as the MBR (master boot record) for the two windows installs (select win7 in grub, then it lets me select which windows install to boot). Now I want to get rid of my solid state drive, and just run from the second hard drive with dual boot. How can I install a new MBR on the second hard drive without having to re-install both OS's?I've tried removing the first hard drive and using bootrec.exe to re-write the MBR and it will not work.I can install grub, and it boots to ubuntu but when I try windows 7 it says there is no MBR.

I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?

I've pretty much installed Ubuntu Linux9.10, 10.04 and Debian 5 on external hard drives before, however, I just want to avoid certain pitfalls that may occur with openSUSE11.3. Has anyone successfully done this before? And, is it similar like Debian and Ubuntu installs in that you have to install the OS using an advanced option and specifying /dev/sdb, etc? Right now, I have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive along with Debian as well and wanted to do the same for openSUSE11.3 and was wondering if all Unix derivatives share similar installation processes. I would just like to keep things as I have it currently where the system does not boot with Grub, and instead I have to go to the bios and specify which physical drive to boot from in order to change the boot order.

Is it possible to install Linux on an external SATA drive?I have a system dual booting between OpenSuse and Windows XP. I wanted to see what other distros were like so I tried installing Ubuntu to my external SATA drive. After installing, I got an error from GRUB, and I had to recover my MBR.I tried the same thing with Mandriva, and got the same result. Finally, I tried another install of OpenSuse 11.2. The result was that I get a grub error 21. The only result of my efforts to try other distros is a lot of experience recovering my MBR.

Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.
Here's the cpu-z report for the laptop if that's any help: report.txt

so excuse me if I don't use the correct terminology, but what I have are two USB external hard drives joined into one drive using LVM.I originally set this up using 11.2 and then used it for months on a system with 11.1. The LVM drive would show up in the file system as /dev/mapper/Media-Media.I then upgraded that system from 11.1 to 11.4 using a clean install and a "minimal server" selection. Now, the LVM doesn't show up anywhere. In the YaST disk partitioner, it shows a "/dev/Media" as being of the type LVM2 Media with no logical volumes

Was anybody successful in installation from a memory stick? I couldn't, I get a message at some stage of installation that repository was not found. A suggestion dialog comes up, but the installation (live) disk (the USB flash drive) is not listed there. I follow the instructions on SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE where there is a part on installation using a DVD image.

I finally got Ubuntu to install and run properly. I installed it as a "windows program" from within Vista.
After booting, I notice that the harddrive onto which I have it installed is not shown as a choice for me to view the contents of. I made it as part of a 750GB drive I have, but that drive does not show up in the list of available drives. There are other programs and files on there I would like to access. Is there a way to force it to be shown?

I am currently using XP and I would like to try ubuntu 9.10. I already tried ubuntu 9.10 using virtualbox and Im impressed by the look and performance. However, I still need more time before I fully install ubuntu in my notebook.
I'm aware that linux's distro is possible to be installed and boot from USB. Most tutorials that I google provide step by step on how to install linux distro (fedora, ubuntu, mint) to USB stick and flash. The dilemma is that I don't have USB stick instead I only have 320gb USB hard drive. And I tried to install ubuntu 9.10 using unetbooting to my USB hard drive but my hard drive is not listed in the USB drive box option.
For information, I created two partition in my USB hard drive, 150gb each. Is it possible to install ubuntu 9.10 on partition 2 and boot the OS from there?
how to install ubuntu 9.10 to a USB hard drive (second partition).

I have a bit of a problem with this laptop. It came with windows vista, and then the owner decided to upgrade to 7. Unfortunately the laptop wasn't compatible with 7 therefore, sound card didn't work at times. The CD/DVD drive is broken. The only option i had was to use a USB drive to try out Ubuntu. I foolishly however, deleted 7.
Since Im not used to Linux I can't really do much in it and I am sure the owner wouldn't be able to use it properly. What I need to know is how can I make my USB drive bootable with XP USING Ubuntu. I've done a lot of research but I keep coming by answers that work on Windows only like running .cmd or .exe files.

I am trying to install Windows XP on VirtualBox, using an external USB CD/DVD drive. VirtualBox boots to the CD/DVD and goes through the first part of the installation flawlessly. After XP restarts from the HD, however, it can't complete the installation because it can't find the files at "D:I386asms". (In fact, it doesn't seem to be able to access the CD/DVD drive at all.) I'm just guessing, but could this be because of how VirtualBox handles USB drives and/or because (if I recall) XP lacks native support for USB?
Hardware and software specs:
--Lenovo ThinkPad X201
--Asus SDRW-08D1S-U external USB CD/DVD drive
--Ubuntu 10.04.1 64-bit (kernel 2.6.32-30)
--VirtualBox 4.0.4 (from [URL])
--WinXP SP2 32-bit (original, retail install disc)

From long ago I think I remember that, in order to install a new hard disk, I must:
1. create a mountpoint (mkdir ...)
2. enter one line (for each partition) in /etc/fstab
Is it still like this, or has this become automatic so that a new (common, internal IDE) disk will be automatically mounted without manually editing fstab?
