After I unmount the device using umount /media/ed7a753f-df88-4984-b65a-5d3a8cc2714a, how do I remount it from the terminal so that the weird directory gets created automatically and the Flash Drive gets mounted there?Another question, where does the system get this ed7a753f-df88-4984-b65a-5d3a8cc2714a. Is it some kind of identification of the disk?

I just bought an external USB DVD (ASUS SDRW-08D15-U) to use on a Kubuntu-based LinuxMCE system. The idea is to set up the computer in the basement and to retain the ability to play DVDs on the 2nd floor home theater. Unfortunately the DVD would not play movies, music, or show files when connected to the Kubuntu/LinuxMCE machine. I tested the drive on my windows laptop and it worked fine. Then I connected it to my Ubuntu desktop machine and got the same behavior as on the MCE machine.
This leads me to believe that my hardware is functioning fine, but I have an Ubuntu/Kubuntu issue. I figure if I can get the drive to work on my Ubuntu desktop, then I can apply the fix to my MCE machine. I opened the Palimpsest Disk Utility (System>Administration>Disk Utility) and saw my internal DVD listed (ASUS DRW-1612BL). When I hot-plugged the external DVD it appeared underneath the internal drive. But here is the strange part - when I insert any type of media into the external drive it Vanishes from the list, accompanied by a repetitive pattern of clicking and whirring noises. Very mysterious.
I have an external CD/DVD usb drive and as soon as I insert a disk (I've tried both CD and DVD), the drive icon disappears (unmounts?).I thought it was a bus power issue because it is a mini laptop (Asus Eee PC). This small/slim external drive has two USB cables, one for power and one for power/data. So, I plugged the power cable into my nearby Windows desktop computer and just the power/data into the Ubuntu PC.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 32-bit Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-686) on an old IBM TinkCentre piece-meal system that runs great otherwise. I have a LITEON iHAS424 Burner attached. As soon as I insert any disk (CD, DVD, Blank, Commercial, etc.) the system either locks up entirely or crawls to a near stop. The drive is about 3-4 months old and I've experienced the problem a couple of times in the past but just about every time I try to use it lately. The CD/DVD drive seems to work fine on other systems, but I haven't had the luxury of leaving in for any length of time to be 100% sure.
I have been able to pull out of the problem in the past by opening up the case and disconnecting/reconnecting both ends of the drive cable, but this doesn't always work and never "feels right" as a fix. Here is what I think are the significant portions of my messages log file:Quote:

Having recently bought a new box (HP Pavilion) I discovered that it is using sata HD and CD/DVD. As there are no specific switches to use when installing to sata drives, I assume that Debian Squeeze is configured to work with sata drives "out of the box", which, in my case, it is failing to do. For the sake of completeness, these are the issues I am encountering, in no order of priority:
* DVD/CD-RW can read data CDs
* Can write to DVD and CD using K3B
* Can play DVDs that I've burnt
* Typing "eject" (no quotes) on the command line will open the drive
But:
* Cannot play audio CDs - Rhythmbox is the only application that can. Amarok does, but then doesn't update track lists when a new CD is inserted and I must quit Amarok and restart it for it to pick up the new track lists. KsCD can identify the tracks but does not play an audio CD (even when the config file is changed to point to the drive). Goobox claims "invalid device" even though when using it on the command line I set the "--device==/dev/sr0" (no quotes) to point to the device. When I press the eject button, Goobox seg faults. I have tried a number of other applications, including cdplay, workman, cdcd, and a couple of others the names of which I now forget, some GUI and some command line. None of these have been able to play the audio CD, and many have claimed drive does not exist at all, again, even when manually pointed to it.
* Cannot play pre-recorded (i.e. commercial) DVDs, irrespective of the application used. To make DVDs work, I must go into the folder and double click the correct VIDEO-TS file (*.vob)
These are the specs, taken from dmesg:
ata2: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
[ 2.025513] ata2.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z, 4403, max UDMA/33

This is confirmed by hardinfo and uses a scsi1 controller. The kernel I am using is kernel 2.6.26-2-686 on an AMD Sempron Dual Core 2300 and I am running Squeeze with no other OS. Is this an issue with GNU/Linux generally or with Debian specifically? Interesting, but one Google search showed that Fedora didn't have such a problem but when the user switched to Debian he found a similar issue. I don't think that the drive itself is broken and nor do I think that changing the drive for something else will work, because I'd still have to use the sata connections.
I have network drive which connected to my wireless router via usual LAN cable. I mount this network drive using Samba to my Kubuntu laptop filesystem. When I play music (MP3, Flac) from that drive, it sometimes hiccups - music stops for few seconds and then resumes. I usually use VLC, but MPlayer and Audacious have same results. I tried to increase buffer in my VLC -> ALSA settings. I increased it from default 300 to 5000ms, still same result. I have very similar issue on same laptop when booted to WinXP. The only player which does not have hiccups in XP is KMPlayer. But it does not want to work in Kubuntu at all.

Is there any way i can accomplish this?
When I insert any USB device (flash drive, bluetooth device, Nokia USB data cable), my system goes in suspend mode (standby). Same thing happens when I remove the device. I have to wake up the computer by pressing a key or the power button. By the way, I don't think this ever happened in the first 3 or 4 days of installing Natty.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 8.04, and Rythmbox 0.11 I am using for my home music source. I have been building a music library on my hard drive by inserting CD's, then using the "Copy to library" function. This works fine, but when I insert the CD, Rythmbox stops playing from the play list and switches to playing the CD. How do I stop this?
I can (and do) stop the player, manually go back to the play list, restart the player, then I can transfer the music from the CD to the hard drive. I'd just as soon not have it auto play. Or, alternately, is there another jukebox like player with more features that can handle the above? I find the shuffling isn't what I like, it seems to play some songs a lot more then others but I can live with that.
If I try and paste text from the clipboard when using vim, it automatically inserts hash at the start of every line. This is driving me mad! How to I get rid of it? Ive deleted all my .vim files/directories in my home directory.

I know that Apache creates as many instances of a CGI program as required but I have no idea how those instances write to the same file in an orderly manner. For example, a CGI program called by Apache inserts additional data in a file, is that file made automatically unavailable to the other instances (children) of this CGI program while it is inserting the data? Or should the CGI program do that?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to either locate a script that is similar to what I am needing or figure out a better way of doing what I need. I have mutiple shops with AIX unix servers, using ksh with virtual terminals that connect. since these are on an internal network we have them connecting to the server as either usr01, usr02, etc. what I need to do is add 15 user's ranging from usr01-usr15 into /etc/passwd each usr is identical in such that each line contains
Code:
usr01::0:0::/usr/tops:/bin/ksh
only difference is the usr# changes. I wrote a script where I was just adding these all to the /etc/passwd but now I have been tasked with adding them to these shops but with out any duplicates. is there any way to have a script check the file to see if the usr# exists and if so proceed to the next number and then input the usr#::0:0::/usr/tops:/bin/ksh into the file?
I am running Red Hat with 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5PAE kernel version. I am trying to run encryptfs to encrypt a partition on my hard drive. One of the kernel modules necessary is the md5.ko. I noticed it wasn't loaded in when doing an lsmod. I tried running modprobe md5 and it fails to load:
[root@ ~]# /sbin/modprobe -v md5
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5PAE/kernel/crypto/md5.ko
FATAL: Error inserting md5 (/lib/modules/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5PAE/kernel/crypto/md5.ko): Invalid argument
I ran dmesg and grepped for md5, but I didn't see anything in there.
Is there a way to set up a custom keyboard layout? (ex: set q to the f key, etc.) I have looked around, but have been unable to find one.
If there isn't one, then a (basically) equivalent solution for me would be to map some of the symbols I need (ex: Δx,Σ,ect.) to ctrl-/,ctrl-., ect. through keyboard shortcuts. The problem I run into here is that I do not know of any commands that paste a specific symbol into the focused text input area. Does anyone know of one?
After a April Fools' Day joke with fake mails (simply faked by forwarding & changing the text body) I tried to insert "real" fake mail into my online GoogleMail account. It was incredibly simple and that freaks me out a little.
I simply created the mail in Kontact, moved it to the folder I wanted it to appear in and synced - done. Someone with better knowledge might probably even manipulate the Kontact database on my computer and then sync, even changing old mails from years ago.
Is there a way to prevent this or find out that the mail wasn't really e.g. sent but just faked? I'm working at the university as a teaching assistant at the moment and from time to time you have those "No, I didn't miss the deadline, I send the mail with the paper to you" students. It was never necessary until now, but I always thought that I might check that by simply asking the student to show me his or her "Sent" folder in their online mail account. But that won't work if you can insert mails into your "Sent" folder via disconnected IMAP.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm writing a C program, and using Autotools. I have a large text file that I need to include verbatim, as data for my program.I used to have a hacked-together Perl script that would take a file like this: Code: A Rabbi, a Priest, and a Minister walked into a bar.The bartender said, "What is this, a joke?" I found this site that contains instructions for doing exactly what I want, but that technique requires GNU's ld, and the whole point of using Autotools in the first place is to make my project platform- and compiler-independent.I should point out that, according to the Autotools help, I can do this with a script called either "txtc.sh" or "txtc.sh.in". Unfortunately, Google can't find such a script, and it's not in any package that I can find.
