has anyone tried to get the telus usb air card to work with ubuntu 9.10. have a friend that i am going to try live cd first to see if every thing works. he has a usb telus air card, will ubuntu just pick it up or is there a special way to config this one

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with ubuntu installed. But I cant get the wlan to work. When I had vista on it I had to use a combination on the keyboard to "activate" the wlan. ( FN - F1 ). But on ubuntu this wont work. Ubuntu don't recognize this function because it was made especially for my computer. In the trobleshooting guide of wlan point 5.2.1 it says that I have to activate the card from windows. But I dont have windows on the computer anymore, even if I had it would just disconnect when booting to linux. How can I activate my wlan card without windows, or the Function keys? (ubuntu have the driver) it only says that its "Disabled".

It seems like I installed the driver right, and network-admin use to show the wireless, but I couldn't unlock it to mess with properties. Now it doesn't even show wireless, and I still can't unlock it, so I'm unable to get my wireless card to work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 3078-tx. It is was a great laptop when it was running windows 7 but when I tried installing Ubuntu, I slowly began to hate it more and more. The issue is with the ATI and Intel switchable graphics card. Ubuntu installs fine and things seem to be great but I cant use the better graphics effects in ubuntu. I installed the driver that ubuntu provides for ATI and it didnt work and ubuntu booted into a terminal etc.. and I had to put it back to the way it was before. After sometime researching on the internet I know the problem is with the swtichable graphics.
Unfortunatley there is no option to turn off switchable graphic in my bios and hp arent much of a help. I dont know what to do now ? Is there any way to get switchable graphics to w ork with linux, is there way to get version of the bios that lets me disable it ? any variations of ubuntu or linux that it works with. I would prefer to use the ATI if i have to disable one or the other cause Im usually running on ac power anyways.
I've just loaded ubuntu to give my old laptop a new leece of life. Everything is fine expect that I can't get the wireless card to work. It just doesn't seem to be exist on my computer anymore. The computer has a button to turn wireless on and off, which worked when it was a windows system, but doesn't seem to do anything anymore. I'm an absolute ubuntu beginner.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits version on a desktop PC. Every thing works OK, exept for a USB hub and card-reader combination from IN-WIN Inc. I could not find a clue on the Internet.
The manufacturer and apparatus code is: ID 10df:0500 (as from "lsusb").
Below I have listed all the hardwire of the PC, as obtained from "lshw". The italic part at the bottom deals with the IN-WIN module. I suspect that it may have to do something with the "emulated scsi-host" thing, of which I just know nothing about.

I don't have an ethernet cord that runs to my computer. When i tried the wlan0 up i believe it said that there is no directory. Then i was reading a lot of forms and tried the iwconfig and i got the essid put in and i don't know how to get the encryption key in. i made the alist for the driver and when i tried the wlan0 up it said there was no directory and then i tried to do a scan anyway and it the said the network was down.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am currently running 9.04 on an HP Mini 1033CL.When I first upgraded to 9.04, my sound card would not work. Finally, about 3 months ago, an update changed that. Now, I see that 9.10 is available, but I am nervous about installing it. Are there any foreseeable problems I need to know about? Keep in mind, I know little about Ubuntu and use it on my netbook (my fun computer) because it is free and I hate windows. Therefore, if there are buggy problems I have to adjust in bios or by tagging something, or whatever, I have no idea how to do it. 9.04 seems fine, so why upgrade?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just set up a server with Ubuntu Server edition 10.04. I installed it by plugging the harddrive into my main pc as the server doesn't have a cd drive. Now the drive is back in the server and the internet won't work. I have run lspci and lshw and neither show a lan or network card anywhere. ifconfig comes up with nothing related to eth0, and says the 'inet addr' is 127.0.0.1. My motherboard has an onboard Realtek 8101L LAN controller. Can't seem to find much with a google search

What I would really like to know is why does it work in kernel 2.6.31 but not in anything later. Right now im running arch on my secondary hard drive with kernel 2.6.31 and everything runs great, full open gl, 3d accel etc but when I upgrade to a newer kernel (no matter what distro) my video does not work. Has there been any improvements on this? It was a problem with KMS i kind of found it by accident, its all working now

I have used Ubuntu without trouble for quite some time now on my computer (maybe 2 years; recently upgraded to 10.04) and have just bought a new computer for the office. When I install 10.04 on the new computer it doesn't seem to recognise the lan card, an atheros AR8151 onboard card (on a GA-G41MT-S2 mobo).
p.s. phrases such as 'build-essentials', 'sudo' and '.tar.gz' files don't mean anything to me (except the last is a bit like a zip file I think).
I have a Dell optiplex GX260, 2.4ghz speed, 512 ram,40gb hard disk. I have installed two operating systems XP and ubuntu 9.10. My problem is getting the new Tv card to work with ubuntu. With xp it works with no problem. I tried to download prgrams like tvtime and xawtv but all amounted to nothing. tvtime fails even to launch while xawtv launches and hangs the computer and nothing responds. I have to manually shut it down using the power button. I did run the Command ( sudo dmesg) to extract some info that I thought might help and is pasted below.

Last month I installed a newer MoBo + CPU and PSU, (See system specs in my signature) and moved from Maverick to Lucid 10.04.
I was running Natty 11.04 64bit up until a couple of days ago, but that was locking up like mad. I did a fresh install of 10.04 over the whole HDD yesterday...though cannot recall it asking me if I wanted 32 or 64bit...will neeed to check)
I'm using an ATI Radeon (Sapphire?) x1650 PRO graphics card - but borrowed from a friend as my previous card wouldn't fit in the upgrade motherboard. Ubuntu is running quite fast with it but often stutters when on Firefox or Chrome. With Natty the system would lock up at least once an hour, with Lucid - at the moment it's only locked up once in 6 hours... I'm assuming this is just problems with Ubuntu and not the card. I get no odd lines or color on the screen.
I'll need to give this card back at some point... I'm wondering if people could suggest other cards (Nvidia/ATI or other) that are known to work happily with Ubuntu 10.04. I've got a budget of around �40, but then I'm not gaming so guess shouldn't need anything too high spec. (My PSU has a PCI-E connector if needed...though doubt it will be!)
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 and for several days have tried many, many different ways of installing my Linksys WPC 11 wireless card into my IBM Thinkpad T30 laptop.
I have got the wireless working by installing Ubuntu 8 and then upgrading to the current version, and I would assume some drivers are currently installed.
As usual though, the signal drops out after only a few minutes and I have to keep re-booting the laptop to continue what I'm doing.
