Ubuntu :: Notification Icons Not Appearing?
Aug 12, 2010I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my iBook and for some reason the Notification Area (2.30.2) just stopped working. Like it shows it's there, yet I'm not seeing any icons or anything show up. Which is the only way I get online from it at the moment. Right now I'm typing this from someone else's laptop.

as you can see, most icons are in the notification area, but skype and any programs with icons opened after appear always on top in the top left corner.
I've tried moving things about to no avail

May 8, 2011I just installed ubuntu 11.04 on my HP Mini 110 and everything is working great except for the battery notification. It can tell me the percentage of battery left, just not the time of usage left, which is very important to me.
*edit: the battery notification is stuck at "estimating"

Feb 28, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, and every time I unplug my laptop from power it notifies me that my battery is discharging. The window appears in front of anything I'm doing, but is not the active window, forcing me to mouse over and hit OK every time I unplug my laptop from power. Is there any way to remove this redundant notification altogether.

Jan 18, 2010Last night I upgraded to the 10.04 development release, and I am pleased with what I see so far. I ran into a problem, however, with the power manager.I am using an MSI Wind U100.
First, I have lost my battery icon from the notification area. It reappears if I plug in, or unplug my AC adapter.
Second, under, "Power Management Preferences" I have lost my "On Battery Power" tab, leaving only, "On AC Power" and "General"
If I wait about seven minutes, the battery icon will appear in the notification area, but the tab remains lost.The problem is due to update. I have confirmed by installing a fresh 9.10 and upgrading again to 10.04 without making any other changes to system.

Jun 12, 2011I have added no data to my hard drive in the last few days. I saw a notification saying I had only 1.8Gb left on my drive. Shortly after I dismissed it and ran: Code: sudo apt-get clean like the notification suggested. Then, another poped up. Now it said I have 0 bytes left.
So, I opened the disk usage analizer and the data seemed normal, and not my full drive size. It still was saying I have no space so I checked the properties widow for / . It said / contained 128TB of data and the file counter showed no signs of stopping after a few minutes. Obviously my drive is not 128TB in fact it's only 500GB. Also the disk manager program (system volume information?) Said it has 28 bad sectors.
Ubuntu :: Laptop With No Battery - Checking Battery State
May 1, 2010Just installed 9.10 followed by a 10.04 upgrade (wouldn't work as a 10.04 clean install). The install and upgrade all seemed to go well.
But now when booting I get a message saying "checking battery state" and then it boots no further. This is a laptop without a battery installed, running permanently from the mains through the charger.
How can I disable this check so that the laptop will still boot without a battery fitted?

Mar 2, 2010getting back to our laptop, the stability window is ~3.2V. Meaning that when you operate the battery above this the electrolyte is oxidized on the positive electrode and reduced on the negative electrode. Remember that we only want to oxidize and reduce the active materials and don't want to do anything else. All these reactions other than the ones we want are called side reactions and these are really bad for the battery. The nominal voltage of a laptop battery is 3.7 V which means that something bad wants to happen as we use the battery.So long story short, stuff (e.g., passive layers and poor kinetics of reactions) happens and things are not as bad as they seem and you can increase the voltage up to 4.2V without bad things really happening. All chargers for Li-ion cells today cut the battery off when it reaches 4.2V. What you have to realize is that at 4.2V, these side reactions are present in finite amounts and start to chemically kill the battery, but its not that dramatic.
Operating to 4.1V makes things better and extends the life, 4.0 V is even better and so on. So why don't battery manufacturers cut the voltage off at, say, 4 V to get better battery life? Because every time you cut this voltage down you decrease the capacity of the battery and its run time. The 4.2V cutoff is a compromise between good run time and decent (read "not pathetic) life.On the other hand, if you charge the battery and then pull the plug (so to speak), the battery discharges some, the voltage drops, and these reactions become less of a problem and your battery life goes up. So the best things you can do is to charge the laptop (or cell phone, camera etc.) and once its charged, pull the plug. Your battery will thank you for it.As a matter of fact, if you own a Lenovo Thinkpad, you can actually change the state of charge to which you charge the battery using the Battery Maintenance utility. You can change this from charging to 100% state (where the voltage is 4.2V) to 90% so that your voltage is less. You lose some energy is doing that, but atleast you can change it to 100% when you need battery power and put it back down to 90% when you can plug in. I wish my Mac has the same feature.
I typically use the battery for a while (say 1/2 hour to 1 hour), then plug it in and wait to fully charge it, then I pull the plug and use it again for 1/2 hour to 1h and then I repeat this. Takes some getting used to and I forget to do this, but I try.

Aug 31, 2010I have a 3 year old laptop with the original battery and its drained pretty bad. The "Battery may be broken" popup was driving me insane and this is how you disable it, in case you are in the same situation as me. Open terminal

Drill down to...
apps --> gnome-power-manager --> notify
uncheck the low_capacity checkbox. This should disable the popup for you if your battery has little life left in it. Now, if any knows how to disable the Avahi popup, let me know.

Jan 25, 2011This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

May 2, 2010I used Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit and built a Ubuntu 10.04 32 bit VM using VMWare player.It's great, except it keeps reverting to a USA keyboard after each reboot.The host OS doesn't do this.The host was installed normally, but the guest was installed via the VMWare easy install thing which does everything for you.I've already set the location back to London, and I've added a UK keyboard to it, but still this odd reversion.I've googled and found other people reporting it but don't see any resolution.

May 3, 2010No matter what I try, notifications do not appear. The notify-osd program is running (if I check ps) and nothing ever reports an error. I just don't see it, or hear it (does it make a sound?)
I think this might be because of my dual screen setup. I have two screens set up, with the screen on the right lower than the screen on the left so that they match up in real life.
This leaves a dead space above the right hand screen, perhaps its appearing in there? But I have already used notification-preferences to move it to the left (does that even work?) and still nothing. What's up? I rely on notifications to tell me that something's up, since the new "notification area" plugin does not flash and is thus utterly useless on this large screen display (design failure)
Ubuntu :: Title Bar Not Appearing?
Aug 2, 2010This issue has plagued ubuntu 10.04 on all my installations, PC and laptop, and is an infrequent annoyance that needs to be resolved. Basically, after boot up, i'll bring up a gnome window and the title bar will not be there. This means I can't click and drag windows easily, and do other things the title bar lets you do. Is there an easy fix to this that i'm not locating? Also i've tried restarting my X session, by logging out, and the problem persists until I restart the system. And even then the title bar may not load.

Jan 6, 2011I set up some shares but df and Nautilus aren't bringing them up on the other computer. I must be missing something.
Here is how I set up the shares on the one system - "Compaq".

I've also run rpcinfo on the ASUS system but with the IP address of Compaq, getting the same results. Which is good right?
I can ping back and forth. I've successfully run SSH on the ASUS machine from the Compaq machine. I'm not sure what to do now. Could this be a permissions issue? I'm using the fist user on each system.

I installed the kernel update just last night and when I went to turn on my computer today my entry to Win 7 was gone.I am able to boot into Lucid with ease but what happened to Windows 7 all of a sudden? I was using it just y-day and restarted to boot into Lucid to catch up on any updates.
It also appears that my 1 TB HDD isn't appearing either. Kernel update gone bad?

Feb 26, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS installed on an AMD K6-2 system. When logging in with LXDE, certain icons such as the HP Toolbox and the Update Manager do not appear on the LXDE Task Bar when they should. The HP icon should appear after logging in (It automatically does with XFCE.) For the HP icon to appear, I have to manually run HPLIP Toolbox.
The various Update Manager icons (gray - package manager working, orange - updates available, red - important updates available) also do not appear at all under LXDE automatically and the only way to see if there are any updates is to manually run Update Manager after a period of time, which should not be necessary. These same icons also automatically appear under XFCE.
Is there something that I can look at to see why these are not appearing? I know there is a file /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. Under "Desktop Session Settings", the only two items listed are Screensaver and PolicyKit Authorization Agent, neither of these are checked. When adding hp-toolbox to the autostart file, it completely launched the HP Toolbox in addition to displaying the icon.
I only want the icon to appear and would launch hp-toolbox as needed. The only icons that appear automatically after an LXDE login, are the Network Connection, ScreenLock and Shutdown icons. It does not appear to be kernel-dependent as I had both the generic and 386 kernels installed on this (now have only the 386 installed) and the icons did not appear with either kernel used.
