Ubuntu :: X3100 3D Drivers To Allow 3D Acceleration In VMWare 7?

Jun 25, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit Desktop on my Vostro 1400 and I'm wondering what I have to do to be able to have 3D acceleration under VMWare (ie. be able to enable Aero under a Windows 7 guest).

VMWare has a popup saying "This computer does not have a 3D graphics system supported by VMware Player." How do I check what driver Ubuntu uses for the X3100? What driver would enable 3D?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Enable 3d Acceleration On XP Over VMware

Apr 6, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) & recently added Ubuntu Studio to it. For quite some time, I'm trying to enable direct 3d acceleration on a virtual XP SP3 machine running over VMware Workststion 7.0.1.

As per VMware forums & many other sites, 3d hardware acceleration is supported for XP as guest provided that host Linux version is supported by the VMware product running that VM.

The forum also says that Ubuntu 9.10 is now supported by Workstation 7.0.1.

So: I have a supported version of host (Ubuntu 9.10) XPSP3 as guest. Latest version of VMware tools installed. Still I don't get hardware acceleration for the guest XP VM.

Ubuntu :: ATI Open Source Drivers: No Hardware Acceleration

Mar 13, 2011

I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series (I believe 5470, but I forget). I installed the open source ATI drivers using instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver. Wonderfully, this gives me triple monitor support (LVDS, VGA, and HDMI at the same time), which the proprietary drivers couldn't do for me. But now I don't have 3D support (and XBMC crawls horribly as a result.) glxinfo shows me I have software rendering:

Code:
$ glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.9-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

Fedora Hardware :: No 3D Acceleration Support Using Mesa Drivers

Sep 18, 2010

I've been struggling with getting my graphics card configured under a fresh install of F13. I have an ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3 and when I run glxinfo this is the result:

Code:
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
server glx extensions:
GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, ....

What concerns me are the lines:
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer

If I try to enable Desktop Effects it tells me I have no 3D acceleration. So 3D acceleration not supported for this card using the open source, stock install drivers? I'd like to avoid the proprietary ATI ones if I can. Background on the video card here: [URL]. It's the cheap-o model in the HD 5XXX series and based on the article above it seems to be more of a beefed up version of the HD 4XXX chip design than a true HD5XXX series card.

Debian :: Woody - Unable To Startx For Vmware Drivers

Jun 13, 2010

As some people may have seen in my previous thread, I was trying to get X (or XFree86) working in VMware. Right now, I'm in Debian Woody, with startx failing on me yet again. I thought I had everything setup ok, but alas, it seems like I do not.

When I try to mount the cdrom drive and install vmware tools, it get errors listed in picture 1. (Also attached is my boot log, hopefully that can help. Please see boot.txt)

Now, back on topic, I have attached XF86's log. As usual, the error is near the end of the file. I think the root cause of x not starting is this symbol issue, although I really don't know for sure. It seems like startx sort of works, since when I try it, vmware resizes the window as if the proper resolution had been entered, and it was about to start drawing the desktop, but then it goes back to the normal terminal resolution, at the command line.

I recommend that you view these files with any text viewer but windows Notepad, since it can't seem to understand return characters.

I have tried various thing like disabling 3d mode in VMware, disabling various KDE effects. I only have these problems with a dual monitor setup, if I switch to a single monitor everything works just fine.

OpenSUSE Install :: VMWare - Tweak / Change The Drivers For Mouse And Keyboard

Feb 11, 2010

I have installed VMWare server 2 on a windows XP host. Then I installed Suse 11.2 on the VMWare server. For the most part everything seems to be working Ok. However, the key board will type two letters with every keystroke. I have used the the accessibility options to force a hack fix (slow keys). Also, the host pointer looses synchronization with the guest. Simple fix, running it off the screen forces VM to synchronize.

I have managed to find work around solutions, but overall it is annoying and effects my productivity (IE Ctrl+C takes about 2 seconds to register!!!). I would like to find better solutions. So I am looking for advice on how I could address these issues, I need advice on two methods:

1) Assuming the problems are within Linux, I will need to tweak/change the drivers for my mouse and keyboard, how would I do that?

2) Assuming the problem is with VMWare Tools, I will need to tweak/update the tools. Now, I have noticed that Suse has their own custom setup for the tools. Thus the documentation for tweaking the tools doesn't apply (ie cannot find vmware-tools-config.pl). So how would I go about playing with that side of things?

3) Ruled out the problem being with VMWare itself. Whenever I run the system in command line mode, or in the graphical installer, the keyboard works fine. It is only within KDE that the problems arise. Thus it is either X-Windows/KDE or the VMWare tools layer that is causing the problem. So my next question, is there a way of turning components off and on to narrow in on what component is causing the problem?

General :: VMware Snapshot With VMware Tools Loses Network On Restart - Host XP - Guest Fedora

Oct 3, 2010

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.

I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/

I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.

I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.

In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.

One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.

It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.

The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Ubuntu :: Hardware Acceleration On AMD Zacate?

Apr 28, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 Natty on a MSI E350IA-E45 with the AMD/ATI Zacate chipset, and I'm not being able to get hardware accelerated graphics working. I tried installing and activating FGLRX, but it doesn't seem to have solved anything. There is no hardware acceleration as far as I can tell, and XBMC complains that there's no OpenGL support. If there's some other way to activate hardware acceleration, I don't know where it is. I looked around Catalyst, but couldn't find any mention of OpenGL or any way to "turn on" hardware acceleration. Then I tried removing FGLRX and reinstalling the xserver-xorg-video-ati drivers as per [URL] , but got a black screen on reboot. Went into the recovery mode, reinstalled FGLRX, and am pretty much back where I started (with a GUI but no hardware acceleration), with no how to proceed from here. I'm especially confused because, from what I have read, the Zacate seems to get along with Natty out of the box for most people.
