View 2 Replies View RelatedI just acquired a Wi-Fire long-range wi-fi adapter, and I would like to test it with my Ubuntu desktop computer. However, my machine defaults to using an internal, discrete wireless card (not hard-wired into the motherboard.) How can I set my new wireless adapter as the default wireless connection? How can I disable my internal wireless card (without opening my computer case)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe only problem I am experiencing is that when I boot Ubuntu quickly finds my wireless network but does not automatically connect to it. A window then comes up asking me to "enter password for Keyring default". After having then entered this password the connection does take place and remain stable. So really no big deal but why do I need to do this every time I boot up. This is new to me. Never had anything like this on previous versions.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI just did a fresh install of 10.10 and whenever I log on it request the password for default keyring (the same as sign in password) in previous versions of ubuntu it never asked and automatically started the wireless; now it asks and tells me the password is incorrect. I can hit cancel a numerous amount of times and it will eventually allow me to connect, but that doesn't seem like a good fix in my opinion. This also happened when I tried out lubuntu 10.04 which I promptly removed due to the menu style.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have gotten Debian working quite well on my Sony Vaio laptop for the past 6 months or so, and it's a very rewarding experience. I however have a small amount of problems that I could not find the answer to through googling or reading Debian instructions.
1) I have an Atheros-based wireless chipset in my laptop that didn't work with the default wireless drivers in Debian. So I replaced them with madwifi drivers and it works great now. However, every time I restart the computer, it defaults back to 1mb/s wireless speed; making me go into root terminal and change the speed with "iwconfig ath0 rate 54M". Obviously this gets a little bit annoying to enter every time, so I am looking for a way to make it automatic. I have looked on Google and gotten some hits but none of them have been successful.
2) Whenever I put the computer on stand-by then return, the wifi refuses to connect. Networkmanager tries to connect then crashes. I have found no hits on this issue with my configuration. Very odd.
I have just installed Fedora 13 on my Lenovo Ideapad S12 (company laptop, evaluating Fedora for companywide use on all laptops) and a facing a weird problem with KDE4 and NetworkManager / knetworkmanager. The laptops wifi card is a Broadcom BCM4312 and I have successfully extracted the necessary b43 firmware. The b43 module loads on boot and the wireless card is activated and ready to use. However, NetworkManager doesn't seem to agree and has wireless disabled by default every time I reboot or even logout / login. I have to check the box manually after which it automatically connects to my wifi network at home.
Any idea where I can check that box automatically on boot?
OS is Debian Lenny. Hardware inspiron 5100. Wireless mini-pci is broadcom 1600.Anywho,did a netinstall and all works well except I can't get the default ip that comes up with the cool wireless strength meter to change. I've tried (almost ) everything. The network gui lets me modify all the values, but is useless. I can get the wireless to work by going in and modifying the interfaces file and getting rid of the avahi-daemon function that discovers the addresses.
So, if I reboot with the re-written addresses in the interface file, and then 'iwconfig wlan0 essid' to my netgear it works. But, no pretty signal strength and I have to manually assign the netgear portion with iwconfig. While installing 'etch' on a desktop I noticed belatedly that if I had no cable connected the install asked me for ip, gateway, etc. Which bring about the questions. Is there a way to change the default values that come up with the automatically assigned ip.Will the netinstall give me a chance to input a manual ip and will it then plow under all the currently installed 'stuff' on the drive. The system runs well except for this.Failing that, is there a step I can take early in the netinstall to modify the data.Or, failing that, is there a way to modify the default if I instead make a disk 1 of lenny and run it?
whether debian lenny can default detect intel pro wireless and atheros?

View 6 Replies View Relatedyesterday I installed openSUSE 11.2 on my laptop. But I'm having problem getting the wifi configured properly. During the installation I got the message "No network running" (which I also saw after the installation when using the network configuration module of YaST after switching from ifup to NetworkManager). After installation NetworkManager seemed to work fine, it detected my wifi card, found the network, and I could even connect to it. Then the problems began, no Internet connection. The first thing I tried was pinging Google which yielded an "unknown host" message. So I checked /etc/resolv.conf, to look for the DNS servers, which where missing.
I added them manually and tried again. Still no luck, so I started pinging my router, which worked, tried again pinging Google using one of there IP addresses, which failed. So I ran route to find out which routes where being used, this one gave an unexpected result, because it only showed the route to the local network (I'm not sure about the loopback one, because this was also a lot of times missing when testing):

I am trying to use CentOS 5.4 to set up a secure laptop, largely because of it's SELinux functionality. Unfortunately I couldn't get wireless to work properly using the default NetworkManager so I installed wicd. Initially it buggered up my whole installation but after relabelling files using SEL I can now use my system again. but.. I can't use it with SELinux enabled, as it denies the required accesses for wicd to work. I also get similar SELinux denials for wpa_supplicant. A couple of snippets from /var/log/audit/audit.log -

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. But then i found a file 40_custom that said:

I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
How is it possible to change the default text that is displayed on the default BASH logon (attached)?

View 1 Replies View RelatedA friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently reformatted and dual partitioned to both Windows 7 as well as ubuntu 10.10. Loading works fine and Windows 7 is 100% operational. I cannot seem to get my wireless network adapter to be read by Ubuntus 'Windows Wireless Drivers' gui. Here are the steps that I have done THUS far, to make sure that we are all on the right path. Before I go any further, my wireless network adapter is an old school WUSB11 Linksys Wireless Network Adapter (running version 2.6).
1) Downloaded and installed "ndiswrapper" from ubuntu's main website. I downloaded the common, utils and ndisgtk files and installed them accordingly.
2) I extracted these three files to the desktop of Ubuntu and accessed the terminal page.
3) From terminal I typed "cd Desktop" to change the directory to the desktop.
4) Next, I typed in "Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_i386.deb
Sudo dpkg -i ndisgtk_0.8.5-1_i386.deb"
5) This installed Windows Wireless Drivers gui successfully and I can access it.
6) I have downloaded the driver files for the adapter from the cisco website and searched them for the required files needed.
7) After extracting the .INF file from the "Drivers" directory named "NETUSB.SYS" (I wasn't sure if the other associated files within the same folder needed to be present together with NETUSB so I moved everything to the desktop) I typed in "sudo ndiswrapper -i NETUSB.inf". After accessing the Windows Wireless Drivers gui I have noticed that the 'netusb' driver is present yet under it, the system states "Hardware present: No". This leads me to believe that maybe I installed incorrectly or my "fireware?" is not present? I was reading through the installation guide posted on the ubuntu website that in addition to the .INF file we also need the BIN file(s)? and SYS file(s)?.. The folder with the drivers for my adapter contains a BIN file but it is not within the "Drivers" section of the folder.
9) Upon mousing over the network Icon naturally my hardware is still not present.
10) From what I gather after the system finds the hardware I am to write into the terminal

But there was no wireless interface shown in the network interfaces entry of hardinfo, even though I wrote modprobe ath_pci in terminal window. My questions are: 1. I followed the instructions regarding updating the madwifi sources, installing them etc. Does this guarantee that apt downloaded and installed the right madwifi driver? 2. I've been running Karmic since it was officially released on my Dell Studio 17 (specs are in my signature) with a Broadcom wireless half mini wireless card.hen I installed Karmic, it gave me the option to install proprietary drivers for my video card as well as 2 Broadcom drivers, STA and one of the BC43 drivers. I installed all of these, and the only problems I had were with the audio. I spent a few days troubleshooting the audio and finally got PulseAudio set up for my card.
Almost 3 months later, I was making use of my wireless network at home, as I had done plenty of times over the previous 3 months, when I closed the lid (thus putting the computer into sleep mode) and took it to the hospital to stay with my fiancé¥ after her surgery. When I got to the hospital, I couldn't get their network to show up. Network Manager didn't even recognize the network. We had also brought my fianc饧s laptop (same machine with a slightly less powerful CPU and only 4 GB of RAM). She is running Windows 7, which detected the hospital's network with no problems. After trying to ad-hoc the hospital network with no success, I finally just gave up and played Sudoku and toyed with some graphics stuff in GIMP until we came home. Upon returning home, however, I was shocked that my card didn't even detect our home network.
I have been unsuccessful for the past 3 days in getting Network Manager to identify our wireless network. The wired network connects without issue and I am able to make use of a USB Belkin adapter, which identifies all 7 of the various wireless networks in my neighborhood, including our home network. While I would be able to simply carry my Belkin adapter with me in order to make use of wireless networks, I would really like to solve this problem with my Broadcom adapter. I've gone through the Ubuntu Wireless Network Troubleshooting guide, but I still can't get it to workOutput of lshw -C network:
