Ubuntu :: Upgrade - Error Authenticating Some Packages
Feb 13, 2011
So If I open Upgrade manager it says that I need to do a partial upgrade for some reason, so I click partial upgrade, but then I end up with this error:
Error authenticating some packages
It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a transient network problem. You may want to try again later. See below for a list of unauthenticated packages.
And this list of packages:
acpi-fakekey
acpi-support
acpi-support-base
acpid
adduser
alsa-base
alsa-utils
apache2
apache2-mpm-worker
apache2-utils
apache2.2-bin
apache2.2-common .....
When I try to install software updates by clicking on the red arrow "update" button, I get a final result stating the following: Error authenticating some packages
It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a transient network problem. You may want to try again later. See below for a list of unauthenticated packages. initscripts libavc1394-0 libtiff4 sysv-rc sysvinit-utils
I've tried this a few times...same result over the past 10 days.
I do have a problem on updating linux ubuntu 10 I'll show you the error and my sources.list.. Error in authenticating some packages: It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a transient network problem. You may want to try again later. See below for a list of unauthenticated packages.
Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.
I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.
what this means? installArchives() failed: Preconfiguring packages ... Preconfiguring packages ... dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 11756 package 'vinagre': `Depends' field, reference to `libgconf2-4': version contains ` ' I get it while trying to update my computer.
I've been trying to fix this problem for quite a few days now and have done a lot of searching on these forums, Linux Mint Forums and some others Google lead me to and have has some success, but am now stuck.I have posted a thread on this same topic on the Linux Mint Forums, but have had no success (if you want check it out at:URL...Originally I received error messages when trying to update involving certain repositories which couldn't be accessed (because they either didn't exist or had been moved) and I hunted these down and changed or removed them.
I have done much searching, etc. and cannot find any broken packages. I have tried many many different commands which have mostly done nothing.I seem to be in a similar boat to this person: URL...
I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade
I have not been able to upgrade any of my 9.10 karmic packages for about a week now. I have attempted to do so using both the Update Manager Gnome tool and the terminal command "sudo apt-get upgrade". Using the terminal command gives me (at the end of the resulting process) the following:
"dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: " syntax error: unknown group 'Debian-exim' in statoverride file "E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)"
I ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade . It says that 3 packages are not upgraded. Thet are linux-generic, linux-image-generic and linux-headers generic. I have never had this problem when using sudo apt-get dist-upgrade since it is supposed to resolve all conflicts and other issues with upgrades. Can anyone tell me how I can upgrade those three packages?
I have been running Ubuntu on my laptop since 9.10 by itself (not dualbooting Windows). I had no problems with it back then but I did notice that when I upgraded, not all the packages installed and I would get an error message saying so. I never thought much of it. The problem became apparent when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4, I would get an error message everytime and the upgrade would be cancelled. This forced me to reinstall Ubuntu for both 10.04 and 10.10. As soon as I downloaded 10.10 I downloaded docky and chromium. Heres where my current problems arise:
- Docky (which worked in 10.04) wont work even after I download compiz. - Every time I update the system, if i try to update chromium or anything else from google it cancels the upgrade. - I tried using "sudo apt-get upgrade" in the terminal but I get "Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened."
I'm a bit confused with this: When I log on a server it says 6 packages can be upgraded. When I run apt-get upgrade though it says that 0 upgraded, 0 new installed, 0 uninstalled and 3 cannot be upgraded. Occasionally, when there are indeed more updates available than those 6 packages, upgrade works fine. I believe the server is up-to-date. Why is that?
Just did apt-get update then apt-get upgrade then apt-get install linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic fdutils linux-doc linux-tools Now at: Linux 2.6.32-31-generic on an x86_64. But upon console login after rebooting into the new kernal:

Why would Ubuntu insist there are so many updates available when neither apt-get nor synaptic seem to find anything to upgrade???
Am trying to upgrade from karmic 9.1 to lucid 10.04 and have the problem that as part of the upgrade I get a report that some packages are broken. As suggested posting the relevant files APT and MAIN Logs from the /var/log/dist-upgrade below.
I just started having a problem with my ubuntu Jaunty. When I try installing Gimp and VLC through Synaptic I get the following error Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade The following packages have unresolvable dependancies. Make sure that all repositories are added and enabled in the preferences
gimp: Depends: libgimp2.0 (>=2.6.10) but 2.6.6-0ubuntu1.1 is to be installed Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>=1.29.3) but 1.26.0-0ubuntu2 is to be installed Depends: libc6 (>=2.11) but 2.9-4ubuntu6.2 is to be installed I get similar message for VLC as well
I installed Amarok after this problem started and it installed properly.
I've just upgraded 10.4 to 10.10 and everything works fine and looks good but I now have the usual palaver of needing to remove some default packages that have been installed but which I don't want such as Empathy and Evolution. Is there any way to upgrade to a new release without getting all the default software packages?
I will like to get a text file of the packages that need to be updated in my ubuntu 9.10 machine.
The thing is that I previously did an update an its made my Zoneminder setup fail, and now I want to double check prior to doing a full upgrade.
If anybody could provide me with a command in the terminal or event synaptic, which could help get a printout or export to text file, the current version in my system with said that need to be updated to, for every packages.
I was updating from 10.04 to 10.10 (was updating through update manager) after some time I got following message:
Code: An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report. When I tried to run the command
Code: ubuntu-bug update-manager as above message says I got error
Code: The problem cannot be reported: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package

I don't know if the problem is the way I create my shares on the Domain member, but here is the way I've configured my systems. My systems are home based, and though the topology may be all wrong, it's set up this way only for test purposes. I love to get things up and running.I've already had a Domain Member running under Samba 3.02xx (Centos), but I'm having problems under Ubuntu and Samba 3.40
Server call Citadel is a VMware Server. I've got 3 virutal machines on this Server, 2 Ubunt 9.10 servers, and 1 Windows XP pro. One of my virtual servers is call Winserver, a Samba PDC server using TDBSAM as it's backend. Configured and working well. I have a share that I can access. On my Windows XP, I'm a domain member, able to access my WinserverServer share "Linux Doc", but when I try to access my domain member, it keeps asking me to login.
I have two ubuntu 10.04 64-bit servers running samba (3.4.7) and openLDAP (2.4.21). The LDAP directory is successfully replicating between the two servers. These servers also serve as LDAP servers for sudo, pam, nss, and other services for a dozen servers without issues. The BDC samba is configured to use itself for LDAP. I connected to the BDC using the samba ldap credentials and verified I could a) see the Computer object b) read NTPassword and LMPassword. The workstations can authenticate to the domain successfully against the PDC. If a workstation boots and connects to the BDC, they login fails with:
Code: [2010/07/18 11:46:23, 0] rpc_server/srv_netlog_nt.c:336(get_md4pw) get_md4pw: Workstation MACHINENAME$: no account in domain [2010/07/18 11:46:23, 0] rpc_server/srv_netlog_nt.c:584(_netr_ServerAuthenticate3) _netr_ServerAuthenticate3: failed to get machine password for account MACHINENAME$: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Successful authentication against the PDC shows: Code: [2010/07/18 11:59:20, 1] smbd/service.c:1063(make_connection_snum) MACHINENAME (192.168.2.145) connect to service netlogon initially as user username (uid=30000, gid=512) (pid 1727) [2010/07/18 11:59:20, 1] smbd/service.c:1063(make_connection_snum) MACHINENAME (192.168.2.145) connect to service data initially as user nobody (uid=65534, gid=65534) (pid 1727) .....
I hope this is the right place to post a Samba related question. I have 2 Windows Server 2003 machines acting up. In /var/log/messages of my fileserver (F10, Samba 3.2.11) I am logging these messages (log level = 10)
Code: Mar 2 15:55:15 fileserver smbd[3768]: [2010/03/02 15:55:15, 0] rpc_server/srv_netlog_nt.c:_netr_ServerAuthenticate2(546) Mar 2 15:55:15 fileserver smbd[3768]: _netr_ServerAuthenticate2: netlogon_creds_server_check failed. Rejecting auth request from client DATA-SYNC machine account DATA-SYNC$
I'm trying to upgrade my 9.10 desktop to 10.04, and it is failing to fetch the following two packages:
[URL]
I've made sure everything is patched current prior to the upgrade and have tried clearing out the contents of /var/cache/apt/archives/partial first as well to no avail.
Since I had problems with Openoffice since the upgrade to 9.10, I've tried to uninstall all openoffice. I've searched for 'openoffice' in synaptic and uninstalled all thet I've found. It has uninstalled many other things, thunderbird, firefox and god only knows what other. Now, there is a way to know what are the packages installed by default? Or, to install all the dafault packages? Or, there is a log of what I've uninstalled?
Here is the apt.log from running 'do-release-upgrade'. apt-get upgrade runs without issue and I have disabled all of the extra repos I had (opera, tor, lucid-propsed, chromium). My system is otherwise 100% up to date with apt-get dist-upgrade and apt-get upgrade. I have already purged all of my PPAs using 'ppa-purge', but it looks like there are remnants of xorg-edgers in there somewhere: [URL]
The strangest thing is going on. I just did a fresh install of 9.10; however, apt-get upgrade returns different results then Update Manger found under System > Administration > update Manager. In addition, the apt-get upgrade method excludes a few upgrades from being installed. These upgrades are bind9, and a few for FireFox. Has anyone run into this issue recently?
After upgrading from one version of Ubuntu to another, what happens to packages that have been installed prior to the upgrade that have higher version numbers (are newer) than the ones that are supposed to be installed via the Ubuntu upgrade?Specifically, I'm referring to compiling the latest version of FreeType to try to alleviate some dependency issues related to compiling Wine (I need a custom Wine patch), and I was wondering what would happen if I had a newer version of FreeType installed if I then later upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, and if Maverick used an older version of FreeType by default than the one already installed on my system.
I have been upgrading 10.4 to 10.10, but in the middle of the new package download my computer turned off (outage). Now Ubuntu won't restart the upgrade or install the packages already downloaded; it tells me it "Could not determine the upgrade" and that unresolvable problems occurred, caused by held packages. How can I reset things to restart the upgrade?
