When I am opening the synaptic manager its showing the following error:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
So How can I open it?
This happened completely randomly. One day, my synaptic and update manager is working fine and the next day, I open one of them and get a error window that doesn't say anything (no details on the error). So, i tried the terminal, sudo apt-get update, and this message shows:

I get an error when trying to run update manager or Synaptic - same thing from Ubuntu Tweak as well. I also tried to update via terminal

I removed all my sources.lists, I tried running apt-cache clean It didn't help. This is really serious. Not only am I unable to do anything with packages (update, remove, install), but the machine is really slow because of this.

I have not ran into this before. I did a new install of 10,04 and was adding programs. Then software center and Synaptic stopped working. error message said it was most likely due to unmet dependencies. I googled fixs which most all ran some sort of "apt-get" command. I just did a fresh install of 11.04 after a failed attempt of updating to 11.10. it installed fine and i was able to update everything fine. But out of the blue the three mentioned above crash immediately when i click on them, any body know a fix....i really dont wana do another fresh install.

the location bar at the top disappears every time I close and then re-open it, and I have to hit View/Location Bar to get it back. Is there a way to permanently keep it there?

When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . I have just had a wee problem with the XFCE 4 Desktop on my Acer Aspire One with the Fedora 10 OS. Netbook worked OK this AM before work; shut down as usual. On returning from work, the Netbook seemed to boot as normal. But I only had one workspace instead of two (my usual), and when I tried to start Firefox, it was 2/3rds it's normal size and none of the usual '_ [] X' boxes in the the upper right hand corner! I tried booting into an earlier kernel version, but still the same. Had I accidentally altered the settings by any chance? Opened 'Fedora','Settings Manager', and clicked on 'Window manager'. But it just opened an error box, saying 'you do not appear to have a Window Manager'! Went (through google) to the XFCE webpage. The windows manager is called 'xfwm4'. Opened a terminal and tried 'top' - no xfwm4 process seemed to be running. So I quit out of 'top', typed 'xfwm4' and hit enter.

Several days later, I saw the update notif saying that there were 12 available updates, so I went to install them, and it wouldn't install any of them. Now, if I try to start Update or Synaptic in any way, they'll open for about five seconds and then close.

Got Karmic Koala up on running on my main computer and have been going through Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Fourth Edition. It was printed during Jaunty Jackalope, but it looks like its information applies to most areas.
However, it says I should be able to find msttcorefonts in the Synaptic Package Manage, and it's not there. I double checked Writer and Times New Roman and the other true type staples are not there, so it's not that it was installed with the boot disk.
Has the name of the package changed?
