I've been fiddling with gnome3 quite a bit, several different variants, and something I've yet to find a solution for is a way to "inhibit" the screensaver and/or sleep features if watching a movie or such.In gnome2 I'd always just add 'inhibit-applet' to the panel, but I've so far found no substitute in gnome3.
View 1 RepliesIt showed up once I upgraded to Lucid. The inhibit applet keeps disappearing from the panel. It doesn't matter where I place it, if it's locked in place, or what panel I've placed it on; it will be there, but then disappear once I reboot the computer and log back in to the desktop. It shows as an empty space where the icon used to be; right clicking the blank space gives me the standard context menu for the panel instead of the context menu for the inhibit applet. The only way I can get the icon to reappear is if I go to the panel properties and fidget around with the Expand and Hide Buttons options. Does anyone have this same problem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince the new Unity in Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't work with applets, like GNOME, I've lost an useful applet to choose the operating clock of my CPU as well as power profiles (Performance, Conservative, On Demand etc.).
I've looked into Ubuntu Software Center but couldn't find anything similar.
I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.
I have enabled the gnome (2.30) screensaver and set it to suspend the machine after so many minutes. It works fine!Now, there are cases that I want to use the machine in "server mode". That is, there would not be physical activity on the machine while it serves files, or acts as a ssh terminal. As there is not physical activity, the machine would suspend after the time elapses. Is there a utility/script/something to inhibit suspend? ps. I had no luck with the dbus/python scripts do circulate in the Internet, nor is the "inhibit" applet anywhere available in my gnome distribution. I use ubuntu lucid.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to inhibit Transmission at times when a user is active and only have it downloading/seeding when the computer is idle (or is there another Torrent client that will do so)? I know about the limits that can be set, but those are clock based, not activity based limitations. As it is now, when it is running, my web browsing speed and other online activities take a big hit in responsiveness. I want to be responsible and seed completed downloads. However, the performance hit makes it difficult to tolerate, and manually pausing and resuming torrents every time I sit down at the computer or get up to leave is inconvenient.

During watching video in Kaffeine the powersave will start and after 30seconds will switch my computer off. When I watch video in Xine I do not have this problem (screen saver timeout is set to 10 seconds). I have not found this option in xine-config.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe mingetty --noclear parameter is failing with my current Fedora 13 installation. In the past this parameter would inhibit the clearing of the screen before prompting for the login name on the console. At present even with the parameter it clears the screen.

I understand the security purpose of the clear screen. But the particular computer is in a secured location. I prefer to look at the content of the previous screen for debugging and other chores.

Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.
Had ubuntu for a few years left came back last month. I lost the indicator applet in the panel. I don't know what I did to get it back. I feel like this is a very very simple thing to fix but I just can't find it. Here is a pic of what i'm talking about.

Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!

I have gone through many threads but most of them have been dead for many time and I think there would have been a few advances in the Ubuntu software domain, so maybe a new downloader is up which manages downloads in a better way.Well, those who have used Internet Download Manager know that it is one of the best ones offered for Windows. It has many useful functions available in one single domain.
- It integrates to all browsers damn well, like charm.
- It can manage rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile and similar file hosting services very smoothly.
- It is a multi-threaded downloader which means that before starting to download file it breaks it up in many small pieces, and then downloads all fragments side by side, making the download very very fast, even on slower connections.
- It can also do very well with the websites which do not permit multithreaded downloading from their servers.
- It can take on video downloads from any page on the web which has a streaming video.
- It is very stable (if bought legitimately, which is not true in most cases ). But quite stable in even when not registered or cracked.
- Above all, it has a smart gui interface which provides interactive operations on downloaded files.
I have used many downloaders for Ubuntu and there has been some problem with each one. Some have a nice CLI structure but not GUI. Some of them are not multi-threaded. Some are multithreaded but do not allow pausing and continuing downloads (which actually does not satisfy the very definition of download managers). I haven't seen a single download manager which is GUI, multithreaded and well integrated to browsers all at the same time.What I want to know is, do my friends here at Ubuntu galaxy want to point out a real shiny star here which would make me forget the damn propriety software? Or if such a downloader hasn't been built yet, why not let's build one... Shouldn't be too hard especially if we have a model example (IDM 5.18 for Windows) in front of us... Well the algorithm must be simple, get address, verify the existence of file, break apart into several pieces and start downloading. I don't know how to implement this algorithm yet, but I am a quick learner and if a few expert programmers join me, we can do something that would remove one complain for most Ubuntu users.
