Ubuntu :: Screen Savers No Longer Work?

Jul 17, 2010

I have a annoying problem, my screensavers in ubuntu 10.04 no longer work. When the screensaver is supposed to activate all I get is a blank screen. This started happening after I installed xscreensaver and copied all of it's 200+ screensavers over to to gnome-screensaver's directory. I have since removed xscreensaver. I have tried multiple screensavers, old and new, reinstalling xscreensaver, and reinstalling gnome-screensaver to no avail. Not even locking the screen will make the screensaver function properly, although I can preview the screensavers.

Software :: Using Windows Screen Savers - Using .scr Screen Saver Files

Dec 22, 2008

I've been a Linux user for years but just recently I decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS (with Windows on the side for any games that don't run well in CrossOver Games).

Anyway, one thing I was curious about was whether or not I could get some of my Windows screen savers to work on Linux. Specifically I had been using "Blue Screen", a cute little ss made by SysInternals that emulates various versions of Windows BSODs.

The file comes as a .scr file (like all Windows screen savers). I wanted to know if there was any program that converted .scr files into Linux compatable screen savers. If not, that's still OK as I've now been rocking "Electric Sheep"!

I'm running Ubuntu Linux 8.10 on a HP DV9000 with an 1.7GHz Intel Centrino Duo processor, 2GB ram, and an nVidia GeForce Go 7600 graphics card.

Ubuntu :: Resources Links Don't Work Any Longer?

I have troubles with the links on the places menu. all the links there that point to /home or to one of its subdirectories don't work any longer.

The links to usb drivers and other places work just fine.

I've tried reinstalling xdg and gnome-menu, but no success.

if I do cat .xsession-errors right after trying to click on one of the links in the menu this is what I see:

giulio@giulio:~$ cat .xsession-errors

Ubuntu :: Zeitgeist No Longer Logging / Get That To Work?

Jan 16, 2011

Since installation (Christmas Day, I believe; had to reinstall, but that's irrelevant) I've been using Zeitgeist to log used applications/websites (via the Chrome extension)/songs (via the Rhythmbox extension) and Synapse to launch applications. However, recently Zeitgeist has seemingly stopped logging things. Nothing launched from Synapse or otherwise is saved to the activity journal. After two re-installations of both Synapse and Zeitgeist (including using the complete removal feature in Synaptic to erase all Zeitgeist related actions and applications) (as well as removing the ppa and reinstalling via Terminal), it is still no dice. I don't know what's causing the problem and am at a loss for what to do now.

When I launch Activity Journal it shows at the bottom bars when it was still working, which looks to take up the majority of the area above the word January, but when I roll back to look at what was launched the bars reset and there's nothing there. Also, it seems that it only logs things when I have activity journal open. When I close and open activity journal again it deletes whatever it saved.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 LTS Log In Screen No Longer Works?

May 8, 2010

I made a USBbootdisk and installed 10.04 the day the final release came out. I installed it, used this post install guide http://blog.thesilentnumber.me/2010/...de-what-to.htm, and it has been working like a charm since then. When I went to log on to it today, the log in screen comes up as normal, I enter my password, ubuntu thinks about it for a minute, and then sends me right back to the log in screen.

I have an Asus EeePC 1005, dual booting Windows 7 Starter/Ubuntu 10.04

I just want to see if this is fixable before I wipe the partition and reload ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Fn Key - Super Key No Longer Works - To Dim My Notebook Screen ?

Nov 30, 2010

I thought my Super key was not working to dim my notebook screen, thinking that it was a driver problem. However, I also noticed that my Super key no longer works. I read somewhere that in order to fix the Super key, you would have to use Keyboard Preferences and change 'Alt/Win Behavior' so that 'Super is mapped to Win-Keys'. There is no option like this for me to select. Moreover, this will not fix my function key issue and my eyes are beginning to strain from my screen being at max brightness all the time.

Ubuntu :: Windows Boot Also Took Much Longer Than Usual - Screen Wouldn't Appear

Jan 7, 2011

Before I begin, here are some computer specs:

Toshiba Satellite C655
2 GB Ram
250 GB HDD
Intel Celeron 900 Joules / 2.2 GHz
64 bit

So, a little backstory. For christmas I got a new laptop with Windows 7, and while Win7 is a good operating system, I wanted to try Ubuntu and see which one I liked better. I installed the 32 bit version, because I understand people run 32 bit Ubuntu on 64 bit machines with out problems. For the first few days, everything was going amazing and I was pretty much using only Ubuntu (I had a dual boot with WIn7). One day, I opened my lid to find that the log in screen wouldn't appear, so I restarted.

I wish I could remember what error I got, but everytime grub tried to load Ubuntu, it wouldn't load, it just gave me some error (it may have been a kernel panic, not sure). So I went into windows, burned a windows repair disc, and fixed the MBR to be the windows boot loader instead of grub, then deleted the Ubuntu partition. Shortly after, I tried the 64 bit Ubuntu installation, and it wouldn't even boot up after the first boot (unfortunately, can't remember the error I got then either). So I repeated the MBR fix for Windows, and just stuck with Windows for a while. However, a new problem arose. Every now and then (and in time, more frequently) everything would freeze, for 1 to 2 seconds.

It couldn't have been my RAM or anything, the computer was blazing fast when I got it. The windows boot also took much much longer than usual, until it just wouldn't boot at all. I had my father (who's much more knowledgeable at computers) to do something, and he loaded into an earlier recovery partition ran a program called CCleaner, which supposedly fixed it. However, the problem was still there, and it got worse. I tried CHKDSK, it didn't do anything. The random freeze ups kept happing more frequently and became more and more bothersome. Eventually my computer just wouldn't boot up, it would just be a blank screen after the 'Toshiba' logo.

I eventually called Toshiba and they said that I apparently deleted the original recovery partition, and needed a Windows install disc, which I don't have so I have to buy one. Until then, I decided to just do a complete install of Ubuntu (64 bit), since I figured if I just did a complete fresh install removing everything, it would fix it. Well, turns out it had the same freeze up problem. I then tried a clean install of 32 bit Ubuntu. No luck, still periodical freeze ups, sometimes if the freeze ups are longer the screen will go grey. Before all this mess Ubuntu ran perfectly. I'm fearing that it may be my hard drive that's the problem, but I'm not entirely sure. So, is there anything I can do to restore my laptop to full health with out buying a new hard drive? Unless the hard drive isn't the problem, but I don't see what else is. EDIT: I tried memtest. Here are the results: It says 'Pass complete, no errors'. What do you guys think?

Fedora :: No Longer Use Headphones After Suspend / Get It To Work?

May 22, 2010

Recently I've been working intensively in my laptop (F12 x86_64) and so I usually only suspend it when I move between home and school, so I can continue working exactly where I left.

Alongside with a problem (now irrelevant given the context) of sluggish video performance after resuming from suspend (addressed in another thread), I've found another annoying problem involving sound (it embarrassed me in the library): after suspend I can no longer use headphones! Sure, I can have them on, but the laptop speakers play as well!

I tried several things in alsamixer and the only option was to entirely shut the volume down.

Of course I would hate to reboot the machine, besides I imagine it is a matter of restarting some service.

Is there a fix or at least a workaround for this sound issue without rebooting the machine?

Server :: SpamAsssassin Training No Longer Seems To Work?

Jul 26, 2010

I keep training SpamAssassin with the spam that slips through, but don't see any improvement is spam detection. The details are these: Using ssh I trained SpamAssassin with examples of spam and ham I had saved for that purpose, perhaps 500 of each. I set up email recipes such that spam@example.com would go through sa-learn --spam --mbox, and ham@example.com would go through sa-learn --ham --mbox. Since then I have forwarded (as an attachment) any spam that slips through to spam@... and an equal amount of fresh ham to ham@...

That worked well for about a year. Spam in the inbox went from 150 per day to less than one per week on average, with no false positives. Naturally, spam blooms sometimes appeared, but training dealt with them.

I wrote up my spam setup in greater detail in these notes to myself:[URL].. For the past month or so, however, a steady stream of nearly identical spam has been getting through and despite training it all I see no change in spam scores on it. Here are relevant headers from a typical message:

(snip)
X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-6.6 required=3.5
tests=BAYES_00,RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED,STOX_REPLY_TYPE autolearn=ham
version=3.002005
(snip)
X-AVES-Antispam: Maybe spam, 17.32 >= 4.00 [as:15.30 cc:0.00 hc:2.02
sa:17.32]
(snip)

Notice that a spam filter on an upstream server correctly flagged it, but my SpamAssassin. Nor does the score on these nearly identical messages seem to change with training. Another clue: previously my spam folder was receiving fresh spam every hour. Since this problem began the spam folder receives almost nothing.

Sure, it would be easy to cook up a procmail recipe to filter on the upstream server's "maybe spam" header, but I'd rather fix the underlying problem with SpamAssassin, not cover it up. Prior to coming here I searched the web, consulted my web host's knowledge base's articles on SpamAssassin, and read everything relevant at spamassassin.apache.org, but I remain stumped.

Programming :: PHP Serial Port No Longer Work

Aug 24, 2010

I had a web server running from a Windows 7 computer and recently moved everything to an Ubuntu server. All is set up and running smoothly. I do have one page that actually interfaces with the serial port. The only thing I do with it is to set the DTR pin to "true" which applies +12v to the pin. This activates a relay. It is very basic and simple. After moving everything to Linux, this page will no longer work. I knew this would happen. I know the page had code in it to call out "Com1" which would change to "ttyS0". It also had "set_serDTR(True);" in the code. I can't figure out how to get PHP to control the DTR pin on a Linux serial port.

Ubuntu Security :: After Booting Up From The Restored Filesystem - Sudo Would No Longer Work

May 28, 2010

I'm having some trouble using sudo - it did work fine, but now when I try to use it, I have the following error:

I understand that I have to modify /etc/sudoers but need to have root access to do this. I am using a bootable USB (lucid) with persistent changes and am unable to login as root, because I don't know the default root password, and am unable to use sudo to change it.

The problem occurred after I had some corruption to the casper file system, so I booted into Windows, moved the casper-rw file to another location on my flashdrive, and used a 1GB backup filesystem to repair the corrupt one using fsck.

After booting up from the restored filesystem, sudo would no longer work.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Iphone 4.3.3 Will No Longer Work With Banshee / Clementine Or Rhythmbox

Jul 3, 2011

When my Iphone had the 4.2.1 firmware it mounted just fine with Ubuntu, OK sure it took a download of libimobiledevice1 and some other libraries but it worked, and sync'd just fine with Rhythmbox. But, as all manufacturers do, they have released a superior new OS for the phone which fixes all those annoying little bug. I have read from 4.3.2 they changed the itunes database version to an updated one. Now this is fine if you have a windows or mac machine running the latest version of itunes but if like all of us here you have an Ubuntu machine for a very valid reason... i.e you wanted a better operating system that wasnt going to cost the earth.

well, you are screwed as they have locked the third part access to the device's itunes library. I have followed long procedures trying to hack into the phone, modifying certain files, creating a hashfile and dropping this into a system folder to fool the phone into thinking it has the 4.2.1 database still but to no avail. Now my iphone is jailbroken, for the very same reasons as to why have an ubuntu machine, a good peice of hardware with good software that i can customise to run how i see fit, this error is the same with my friends non jaibroken phone and my wifes newly updated iopd..

Surely someone out there who has an ipod, iphone 3gs who are running 4.3.2 or higher has figured out how to fix this annoying "update" problem. The phone mounts fine and i can see a documents drive and the main iphone itself, so it is being recognised but im getting errors when trying ti access the phone in ANY linux media software... They all see the phone but cant recognise the database.

OpenSUSE Install :: No Longer Get GRUB's Boot Screen

Jan 28, 2010

I've run into a strange problem recently. My primary OS right now is Windows 7, and OpenSUSE is secondary. I had GRUB as the bootloader, and everything seemed fine, but I ran into one problem in Windows 7: one program refused to work correctly with ATI forced anti-aliasing on, but it is needed by others (or else edges look jagged). So I decided to install ATI Tray Tools. But it seems that Windows 7 is being evil and won't let install drivers that their creators didn't pay Microsoft for (thank goodness that's not the case in Linux). That means I had to use a driver overrider program, and that means that it had to change the Windows 7 BCD options. And that's where bootloaders kick in. It seems that Windows 7 is too lazy to check for its BCD on other than active partitions, so it doesn't allow the overrider to function.

So what I did was change GRUB to boot Windows 7 with makeactive flag. The problem now is - it won't deactivate! I no longer get GRUB's boot screen, it just boots to BCD directly. So my question is - is there a way to deactivate (or, rather, reactivate the /boot partition) after Windows 7 shuts down or restarts automatically? Obviously I don't want to use GPartEd each time I want to boot to Linux.

I have a ZTE HSUPA USB Modem Model:MF636 which used to work great and then is not longer detected.

I am using Fedora 12 and was having problems with the modem not been properly detected and filed a bug, which turned not to be a problem of NetworkManager, but an issue with udev.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=603433

I followed instructions to edit /lib/udev/rules.d/61-option-modem-modeswitch.rules and then it worked fine.

Now the modem is again not properly detected. Here is a copy of the results from dmesg code...

I have tried restoring the file that I edited. It was back to the stated previusly reported. I also have tried to run an older kernel. Then I updated to the latest kernel available for Fedora 12. Nothing seems to work.

I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.

whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Driver And New Kernel 2.6.35 Kernel - No Longer Work

Nov 24, 2010

With the recent upgrade kernel, my ATI driver can no longer work. After upgrading to the new kernel, upon reboot I would get stuck at the "checking battery status" and can't boot into kubuntu.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 64 on intel i5 with radeon hd 4870.

So I thought I messed something up since I was fooling around with conky script the day before. I did a clean install of kubuntu 10.10 64 and reset all my settings and my files. At this point, everything works smoothly and I can reboot multiple times without a problem.

I proceeded to install the Radeon catalyst driver following the documentation, which worked perfectly for me on the previous kernel. After rebooting, I can no longer get pass the "checking battery state" black screen. I had to boot into safe book, uninstall all fglrx and also delete xorg.conf to be able to boot back in normally.
